Using PDAnet bypasses VZW tethering charge and in my past experience also bypasses the 5GB limit (although I never got that high anyhow) as they just see you as using the internet on the phone. That was with a Kyocera a couple of years ago.
Now using BB wiwth CradlePoint M1000 for hot spot on the coach. Works great but $$$ and not available for the Droid ![[emoticon]](http://www.coastresorts.com/sharedcontent/cfb/images/frown.gif "frown")

AT&T's tethering package costs 60.00 a month for 5 Gigs of date. If you have a blackberry, there is a program called tether (www.tether.com). It handles all the connection stuff for you and connects your PC to the net through you berry. It costs around 50.00, but is feequently on sale for half price. Once time charge, no monthly billing. My understanding is that it cloaks your tethering and is undetectable by the carrier. I've been using it for over a year, sparingly. I don't use large amounts of data when I tether, just email, surfing, etc...

Got the DroidX with its own mobile hotspot, "only" $20/mo. It works great! It does suck battery so I have to have juice available to use it, but then the laptops also want juice every so often as well.

The phone has an unlimited data plan, but the Wi-Fi hotspot feature does not.

Just bought the VirginMobile MiFi with unlimited data. Device is a mobile hotspot supporting up to 5 devices. No contract. So far so good. 3G isn't Fiber.... But it may just work. Underlying network is Sprint.

Is anyone have experience with the blackberry torch from ATT and what I can get for the laptop for a trip to Alaska? Technology is really tough for me.

The map for Virgin Mobile is not very accurate. My home shows no coverage or even any where near my home yet it works fine.
I've opted to go with the USB device so I can connect an external antenna. I've ordered a Netgear MBRN3000 mobile router to share the connection.
It is more money in the long run but gives me a lot more options and I can mount an antenna on the roof. Router can be hardwired into a 12v supply. Total cost is a little over $200.

If you have an Android phone, you can go to the Market and get an app called easy tether. You'll want to buy the app (one time fee of ten bucks and you can change the activation if you get a new phone) it works on all networks. You can even go to https sites...
