Fanzaya, similar here. We got our RV as a safety net so we would not end up homeless with 3 kids in tow. We plan to "roadschool"/homeschool our kids at this point. It seems better than staying in one town, forever. Once we get her legal, we are leaving Cen Cal, and exploring as much of the world as we can.

We attempted a smog today, and learned whe would fail no matter what. Idle is too high, and there is exhaust smoke (dh claims is white, prior owner failed smog test says blue, i say blueish white...). We had found a non CA carb on that we swapped for the old CA carb. Vacuum hoses were royally messed up (who breaks an emission control valve, caps it off, and re-routes it?) But I think I got it hooked up right. The diagrams from haynes manual and mopar do not match up identical to our setup... of course.

Based on paperwork we got with it it passed ca smog great in 2010, overheated in 2012 going through NV, got a rebuilt card installed there, and failed CA smog 4 days later as tampered and a gross polluter.

We know we have some idle adjustments to make, and we are starting with low price ways to fix the smoke issue, crossing our fingers it isn't a deeper head gasket, valve, or cylinder issue. We have no hard evidence of any of those at this point. Oil levels look fine, water/coolant levels seem ok thus far... time will tell... in the meantime, any suggestions on checks?

Sorry so long, kids are asleep and my thoughts can flood my brain lol. [emoticon]

Don't know the costs/particulars..... but you might consider "moving" to another state?

Colorado non Denver/high country, has no emission tests at all......!!!!

Food for thought. Some states are also cheaper to title a vehicle.

I think my MH was $75 this year for taxes and plate renewal.

Folks, I am in stunned silence.

This thread is now 600 pages long.
Don't pinch me. That's just too weak.
Kick me. I am amazed.

In Texas, no smog, registration is 40.00 a year. insurance, liability and uninsured is 120.00 every 6 months, this is based on a 1978.Earlier models will be cheaper..You can register it antique which is 60.00 for 5 years, but are limited in miles driven to 1200 miles per year. The plates are good for 5 years, and no inspection is required..I hate to be the one who breaks the 600 mark.Mark! LOL

Keep forgetting to post this for all those with the 440-3 engine, since Champion BL9Y plugs aren't available:

We have a 360. This is our very first V type engine, we are used to 4cyl vehicles. But none of those can haul a home with them. Lol.

Part of the decision to roadschool the kids is to locate a new place to live. We have life ideals that are just not attainable here (like having a cow... in the middle of the city?), land is too expensive for the amounts we would like, business ownership is not the best here. Do not even get me started on the drought conditions and bad air quality here, year, after year...

So,you have the lean-burn carb, yes?

More likely a two-barrel BBD. That's what my '77 B200 318 had. Float adjustment is tricky and they have a tendency to leak and sink.

Valve stem seal is a definite starting point for solving oil consumption/burning issue.

1. Remove valve covers.

2. Turn engine until piston is TDC

3. Pressurize cylinder with compressed air. (To hold valves.)

4. Use special bolt-on valve spring compressor, remove spring key and spring, remove what's left of valve stem seal.

5. install new valve stem seal, replace spring and spring key.

6. Repeat 4 & 5 on other valve.

7. Release compressed air from cylinder.

8. Repeat 2 through 7 for next cylinder until all eight cylinders are complete.

9. Replace valve covers.
