Hellos to everyone. I'm new here. First Post.

I just found out a week or so ago that I am to be evicted from my long time home. So, not wanting to tie up a lot of money in a new motor home or trailer, I purchased a 79 brougham on a Dodge chassis. 69t miles and with an (older looking) running Onan generator with 183 hours. She just tugged at my heart when I saw her.

She is an older lady that has been abused and neglected for sure, but she still shows some spunk and promise and I was always a sucker for a hard luck story, and she has had some hard times.

But her roof a/c works, the hot water works, the propane heater works. . Right now she doesn't have any dash air or dash heater. The heater core has been bypassed, so I'm quite sure it has a leak. So I need a new heater core. I "think" she has a 318 but need to check to make sure. Not quite sure how to do that but I will figure it out.

It is good the motor checks out and drives good - but that I won't be driving it much - because even though the tires have lots of tread, they are age cracked pretty bad.

One other problem is no dash air. It has a compressor but no inside controls for the a/c. I'm thinking maybe it could be that it had an "add on" a/c and after problems - the owner just took the inside unit out and trashed it. No proof of that but I don't think the a/c was controlled by just the heater control (but I could be wrong).

The roof looks rough and needs some kind of coating on it, even though I couldn't see any evidence of leaks inside. The little combo toilet/shower is a disaster area and I don't know if any thing works as it is full of trash and debris.

I really need some manuals. Which I will look for. Oh..One thing I want to do is replace driver and passenger seats with the ones that swivel (and lock for driving) and get after market new style seat belts if there is such a thing). Any info on that will be appreciated. I have exhausted local sources pretty much on those.

It will have to have many repairs and remodels inside and I don't have much time before colder weather. I am going to need lots of parts, so if anyone has a favorite place to get good parts at reasonable prices, please post links or such.

OK..got to get out there and shovel out at least twenty years of neglect and such. At my age it will take a day or five, between nap and rest times.

OK, sorry for the long post, but you know how us ol' folk are.

Papa,
I have a 74 Brougham that had been neglected for years as well. Took a while to fix it up but we have enjoyed it. Mine has a 360 and I am guessing yours is as well. Somewhere in this forum is the formula to decifer your VIN # that tells you engine size. Mine has what I think is an after market dash air, as there is an plastic bump out screwed on the front dash panel that contains the air controls and vents and the radio. We just had to fix a tension pully and recharge it and worked ok. For seats I would go to your local salvage yard and search old vans for the seats you want. Make sure to have your cab dementions figured out so you get seats that will fit your cab. Any question you have someone on here has the answer for it. Good luck and welcome to the forum. Sorry about your house, there is way too much of that going on right now.

I don't think anyones dying statement ever contained the words "I wish I had spent more time in the office", so lets go somewhere!

Papa Ray,,,
Remember to make sure they can PROVE that they hold the mortgage! It's been reported on a couple of TV sources that up to 80 percent of the Mortgage Holders CAN'T produce the papers to show they own the Mortgage.

If they can't prove it. They can't evict you!

So much for Derivitives. eh?

Somehow I get the feeling that 999 out of 1000 folks around here would NOT jump on you for that particular comment. I'm one of those 999. Don't have a C/W/P (required here in N.D.) but keep my little buddy in the back...in case I run across a rabid skunk ya know...

Almost impossible to get here, so I don't have a CCW either, but I do have a .45...

I avoid 'lists' too. My friend, is named 1911.

And of course my 'Friend' has 'friends' as well.

Dang Trucker, that thing barks like a dog. Those .357s feel like they'll 'bite back'. Looks nice. Good piece.

Welcome, Papa Ray!

Easiest thing is to see where the distributor is on the motor - at the front (near the grille) or at the back, near the doghouse cover? If it's at the front, it's a big block and is either a 413 or 440. If at the back, it's a small block and is either a 318 or 360.

If you post the first 8 chars of your VIN, I can decode them for you.

Next, if there is ANY age cracking/dry rot at all on the tires, replace them. Which size tires are on your rig?

The dash air was always an add-on in rigs that age. The controls were on a vertically-mounted piece that blended into the dash stuff to the left of the radio (above the doghouse). I don't have a good pic from the first RV I had, a '75 El Dorado Class C.

Papa Ray,

My AC is part of the heater control. There is nothing actually labeled AC but there is a knob on the bottom right that has a range label from Cool to Cold. This is different from the slider knob that is labeled "Temperature." The slider is just for the heater.

Mine seems to be different that what Leeann described. Mine is to the left of the radio but below; I would call it left of the vents. Mine is also a 79. Here is a picture:

Yup, that's different from the '75 setup below.

The knob(s) to the left of the radio are the aftermarket AC controls (can't remember the stinkin' name atm):
