Hey guys, very new to this whole scene, but I am converting a 1978 Dodge 440 Sportsman into a Food Truck. I have all of my cooking equipment and ice cream machines, however I can't get this daggum machine to start! She'll turn over, but won't actually start, she is trying really hard. The previous owner said the mechanic who drove it to where it is parked now, ran it by spraying ether into the carburetor the WHOLE WAY. I have replaced the carburetor, and it won't start. I replaced the battery cables and the battery itself. I'm in the process of replacing the spark plugs and fuel pump. Next on the list is the Ignition coil. I really hope this gets her to start. I'm at my wits end. The fuel pump squirts nothing when I crank it, and the spark plugs aren't sparking. So I guess they're just plugs now. I pulled one out today, damn near had an anuerism taking off the metal skirt under the dog house thing, and it was black black black. After I replace these, if it doesn't start, I'm hopping back on here to hit you guys up. So heads up I guess. I'll check tomorrow for posts. Thanks guys, keep this tradition alive! I love my machine, even though she hasn't run yet. She's my DO GE. |

Did you replace the fuel filters? Maybe even the line? That might help.

The rule of thumb is ignition first, fuel second. If you don't have good, well-timed spark, it doesn't matter whether or not you have fuel. 1970 Explorer Class A on a 1969 Dodge M300 chassis with 318 cu. in. (split year) 1972 Executive Class A on a Dodge M375 chassis with 413 cu. in. 1973 Explorer Class A on a Dodge RM350 (R4) chassis with 318 engine & tranny from 1970 Explorer Class A

You say when you crank it, There is no gas, and no spark, You first have to get a spark and 2ed get gas, Then you can start trying to get somewhere with it.

Hello...We are the proud owners of a "new" 1976 Dodge Sportsman Four Star Coach w/ 440 enjine What a gem we found! It is mechanically sound and everything but the refrigerator works, so far. We have completely cleaned up the interior and now have some Trav'ler Stove questions. The top burners work just fine. We are unsure about the stove. We lit the pilot light and it was fine, but the bar never lit. We had a spare part in the oven that looks like a thermometer or temperature sensor, but it was not attached. We have taken pictures of the oven interior to help explain what is there and what is not, but I am not sure how to get those on here and unless someone can help, I'm not sure it's worth the time to have everyone looking at it ![]() Thanks |

Or, talk nice to Leeann or me and get an account on that other site where you can have your own thread dedicated to your motorhome, complete with pictures. Then you can just link to the pictures on your thread. |

Hey...that's an idea....I've been trying to just upload a rig picture and can't get the picture under 100KB after resizing and resizing and then trying to take lower grade pics. So, after saying that, is there another thread that deals with appliances? I've been searching for help online for the past 2 days and can't seem to find any info on these Trav'ler ovens. It would be very helpful to even find an owners manual. Unfortunately when you purchase something preowned, there isn't a lot of info available. Also, we would love to figure out exactly what we have. We know that it is a 1976 Dodge Chassis with a 440 engine. The side says Sportsman and the back says Four Star Coach. So, what exactly is it? A Sportsman, A Dodge, A Four Star....How is it classified. Also, we have a very large U shaped dining room that becomes a bed, a bunk on top of it and a bed over the cab. How to do figure how long it is? We are guessing 22--but have seen them classified as 18, 20, 22, and 24...which one is which? |
