Topic: How many of us are there? Owners of Dodge based RV's?

Kendas,

My 79 has two vin number plates, both in the door frame of the driver's side door. Have you checked there?

Not there... There is a "sticker" (I ass/u/me from Fleetwood/Tioga) that repeats the the firewall VIN info along with both the truck and complete RV GVW limits. The left door pillar (latch end) has a Desoto/Dodge data plate that does NOT have the VIN on it but does have other information on it. There is no VIN plate on either the left or right inside of the windshield (on the dash).

That plate does have my VIN on it. It contains: MAKE, MODEL, VIN, TON, and MAX GVW on it.

Right front frame rail, near the right front tire?
Saw it on a website somewhere when I first bought my rig. Forgot about it. Never did check to see if it was actually there.

I'm thinking about buying a 1973 Dodge Sportsman C class with 36,000 original miles. 24' although it looks shorter to me.

The problems are: The skylight over the loft has been leaking, apparently for some time. The seam on the right side has pulled apart and what looks like the plywood decking is rotten. How difficult and expensive would it be to fix?

The owner was using an additive and then switched to high octane gas and said that he hadn't had any problems. I am wondering how long it be before I will need a valve job.

Also the neck of the gas tank had a leak and it was repaired with bondo. Is is possible to get a replacement?

The fuel pump went out recently and the owner said it made a popping noise. Anything to that?

This little Dodge supposedly sat for 15 years, seems to run great and handles well with good brakes.

It doesn't have a generator - didn't come with one. I was kinda thinking about solar. Both systems seem pretty costly.

I'm just wondering how much money and work I'm looking at here to get it ready to roll.

I'd run with that kind of water damage. It's a real PITA to take everything apart, fix and put back together.

I think you can find one in better shape, personally.

Thanks. Yeah, I have a lot of reservations about that water damage.

I agree with Leeann and I would look for one that already has a generator. Also, be sure to check that all the appliances work--one new appliance can cost more than you pay for the RV. Make the owner run the refer overnight (before you see it) to make sure it gets cold. A new refer is $1200+.

Keep in mind that you will probably need new tires on any RV that you get. This will run you $600 and up.

Thanks for the good information. I forgot to mention that this one needs a fridge. Didn't realize they were that much.

I'm going to keep looking.

Yeah if you buy one with a lot of water damage you really need to be ready for a lot of work or just like doing it for sure
