Being tuned don't hurt one if done correctly.

Agree. No mechanic here, although I can mess up anything.
I mostly was making reference to those engines vastly over-tuned, or with propane injection, for example. Something that was used for truck pulling even. Wouldn't want to touch one of those.

Quote: ..The pickup truck diesel engines will never last at their screaming 3000 rpm redlines....
Is that a fact eh.??
Allow me to disagree....
1: A typical 2500/3500 diesel ~6-6.7L will likely not go over 2700-2800 RPM at the worst of times....EVER.!
2: My 2500 6.6, like many others is nearing the 270,000 mile mark...still pulls like a raped ape...has never been redlined - towing or otherwise...the Allison simply won't let it unless one forces it to - why would ya.?
Not sure where you get your info my friend...given normal maintenance, diesel will outlast and out pull a gasser any given day of the week...on any road in any province in any state.
period - end of story - time for a new thread.

As far as being tuned. I agree with the statement: "if done correctly"
But we have all seen the 18-25 yr old with a new to him diesel and just HAS to get it tuned. Using no research, will stack a canned programmer on top of another canned programmer and in 1/2 hour limp his trans.
For me the best investment I made in that regards was going with EFI Live - actually flashing my ECM with 5 tunes from a well known and respected programmer in the diesel community, (Idaho Rob). combined with an Edge Monitor and a DSP5 switch (5 position rotary switch for 4 tunes + 1 stock) - simply excellent and good for ~3.5 mpgs better than stock.
Nothing crazy;
Level 1 stock
L II ~25 hp (Econo)
L III ~40 hp (tow) This is where I run it most of the time.
L IV -65 hp (go quick)
L V 105 hp (go a lot quicker...quicker)
Am very happy with this. towing my 5th I have avg'd 12.7 mpg going from Calgary to the Shushwap and back...not too shabby as far as I am concerned.
Try that with a 6.0L or 8.0L Gasser and kindly let me know what you get for MPG's...??
Cheers

My LLY Duramax has a 3250 redline under power and a 4750 redline under deceleration. I'd say your "2700-2800" is a little optimistic.

Sustained 3000 RPM may not be healthy for the Cummins I6, but my Powerstroke V8 also had a peak horsepower over 3000 RPM with a higher redline.

My 2005 puts a body imprint in the seat up to 3500 but rarely does it need to go over 2500 in towing or daily driving.

The Cummins 5.9 and 6.7L are rated for 3400 and 3300 rpm in marine applications. Cringe doesn't cause excessive engine wear. Strange how people brag about how tough their diesels are yet they believe running them in their normal operating rpm range will hurt them.

I like that this debate is still alive and well. I gotta say diesel all the way, its cheaper by far in my neck of the woods. Not so great if your out in the winter though.
