Whats up? just a little info for ya. I started pulling my 5er (about 7500 lbs loaded)with a 98' chevy 1500 excab shortbed with the vortec 350 and 373 rearend.Did ok on flat land but the hills killed me.I was getting about 7 or 8 mpg and working it hard to stay at speed.I traded for a 03'ram 2500 qcab SB with the 5.9 H.O. cummins and auto trans with 373 gears. Pulling the same 5er, I get 13.8 mpg average unless i'm pulling in the mountins alot. The truck handles the 5er with no problems and no hill or anything for that matter slowes this thing down. It is a real pleasure to drive(when my wife lets me behind the wheel). Also my brother-in-law has the same truck but his 5er is about 1000lbs heavier and he still gets the same milage that I do. I hope this helps ya,

The Excursion has a 44 gallon tank vs the 26 gallon tank of the SB 2500HD/3500 Chevy pickup. I had a DRW CC Chevy 3500 big block pickup in the past with that size tank and hated to keep looking for a gas stop several times a day on a long trip.

I think on this topic its important to consider that almost everyone who owns a diesel previously owned a gasser.

Back in 1999 I bought my f250 cc v10 4x4 as a part time work truck and part time toy hauler. I have been happy with the gas engine, it is quiet and smooth and has been cheap to maintain. I drive it 3-4 times monthly so in my case mileage is a non-issue. I-m lucky if I drive it 4k per year. Hopefully by the time I buy my next truck (at this rate will be a while) I will have more time off and I may go diesel. Living with gas is nice though, quiet, smooth, easy on the transmission, plenty of power for smaller trailers and my slide-in. If your going to let your truck sit around to me gas makes sense. PS not to flame anyone but I have read many boasts of how diesel mileage was so good that trucks are being used as commute vehicles. No way for me, my bmw 325i is alot more fun to drive.

1999 f250 sd, cc, 4x4, v10, now a Tundra crewmax as well!

HEY DIESEL GUYS,GIVE US BREAK IN THE CAMP GROUNDS AND STOP IDELING YOUR DIESEL ENGINES FOR A HALF HOUR PRIOR TO PULLING OUT OF THE CAMP GROUNDS.
THE NEWER DIESEL ENGINES NEED ONLY FIVE MINUTES FOR WARM UP.
ALSO YOU WON'T BE POLUTING THE AIR.
THANKS

Try getting 30 mpg with a 10 passenger Van with a gas engine.

Believe it or not Mercedes Benz uses the same 5 cyl Turbo-Diesel in it's 35 passenger Sprinter bus so I don't think a 10 passenger version would have poor performance. Sure it won't run 98 mph like my 325HP 6.0 PSD Excursion but to get 30mpg you have to give up some performance and 0-50 in 9.3 sec or 0-70 in 19.0 sec is good enough for most people.
