Everyone entering Mexico must have a Tourist Permit, officially called an FMM unless they hold temporary or permanent residency cards or are citizens of Mexico. This applies even to those walking across the border. You must provide a passport to get your FMM. For short stays in border areas, up to seven days, there is no charge for them, but for anywhere else, there is a charge of about US $25.
The FMM is good for up to 180 days, beginning when you enter Mexico. Fortunately, it can now be purchased on line, and you can print it out. All you have to do is stop at your border point of entry and get it stamped. Here is the link: https://www.inm.gob.mx/fmme/publico/en/solicitud.html#
You do NOT need a Temporary Vehicle Import Permit for driving in any part of the Baja Peninsula or the Sonoran Free Zone. In Sonora, you are only required to obtain a permit if driving further than kilometer 98 of Mexican Federal Highway No. 15.
Vehicle permits are good for up to 180 days UNLESS your vehicle is an RV. RV permits are good for up to 10 years. Both permits cost about US $50. There is a refundable deposit on all vehicles other than RV's, based on the age of your vehicle. TIP’s are paid for with a credit card and the deposit is refunded back to your card when you turn in the vehicle permit when you leave the country. Yes, they reliably do return the deposit. Applying for both the FMM and TIP on line is the only way to go. Yes, they can be obtained at the border, but you’ll need copies of a number of items, have to wait in several lines, and possibly have language issues. The on-line TIP will arrive at your address in no more than 11 days, and there is no additional charge for their shipping it to you.
Crossing borders is stressful, even if you do it on a regular basis. Doesn't it make sense to get all of your paperwork in advance so that the only thing you have to stop for is to get your FMM stamped? It just makes life easier. Remember, you are on vacation, having an adventure, exploring possibly new territory. Anything that makes it easier just makes sense!

Great info and thanks for it.
Have a couple questions.
We cross at the truck crossing at Nogales,the options on the website are Nogales 1,2,or3 ??
How long does it take mailed replies to Canada to arrive?
FMM's can be purchased 14 days before so if I want to cross on the 20th I could actually apply for the 6th or later?
For the "date of arrival to Mexico" do you have to be bang on the date you apply for?

A quick Google search showed that the truck or Mariposa crossing is #3.
I believe that they arrive in Canada in less than 9 days. Last time we got one in the US it came FedEx.
Yes, up to 14 days in advance.
Actual arrival date can vary.
Remember, once you have your TIP, that's it. The FMM needs to be stamped at Km 21 when you enter through Nogales. That's it!

Problem with TIP. After completing first page and going to next page get this
"By the time, the National Institute of Migration service is not available for your pre-register verification, please try again later."
Been going on for a few days now and trying several times per day and get same thing.
Any help appreciated, times running out!

It is the same information as on other forums. The only part I have issues with is:
"Police officers will have a cell phone application to scan the new permits and verify them."
Good luck with that. We're in SMA right now until next week. I may find a transito in Monterrey as well as my small town of 8500 just to see what they know about this. I think it will open the door to more corruption.

Just be very carefull of counting the days from when the FMM and the TIP is issued, both are for one hundred and eighty days (180) NOT six months, that can get you in trouble.

The issue getting through to register for the TIP and apparently you can now print the document at home. Is that your device probably has a no cookies setting in place.
