Personally, comparing the 6 he has vs the 10 sp. He should appreciate the 4.5 1st gear vs the 3.5 he has from an easier starting standpoint. Then being as lower gears are spaced closer together, rpm range used should be less.
This should also allow a higher RA so lower RPM at 60-70 like he drives, still a lower overall low gear to start with.
Possibly even able to computer program to not use first unless really loaded, or on a grade say steeper than 10%.
I'd like these option with 1500 4.3 V6! I'm only a 300/300 gaz motor with 3.42 gears! This this pulls better in first than the BB 3sp pos TH400/4l80e transmission with 4.10's!

Another benefit to a taller geared rearend is that it is stronger. Having a tranny with more gears makes it possible for the rearend to be stronger.
I was actually told by a longtime GM employee, that the reason the Dmax was not available with 4.10s was that it destroyed the pinion gear everytime they tried it.
An astute observer will note that GM went to a taller 3.42 in place of the 3.73 AND increased the size of the R&P when the 10 speed became available. These changes allowed them to do away with limiting power in lower gears.


Probably because GM didn't want to design a larger rear end assembly and do it right to support a larger gear.

I do wish I could lock out first gear on my truck when I don't tow and probably the same could be said with the 10 speeds.
The ring and pinion surface contact shrinking with lower gears is a well known fact among gearheads.
And my Silverado's 10 speed skips 1st gear when not towing. Do the Fords not have this feature?


I’ve got 34” tires and 3.31 axles. My truck always starts out in first. The normal shift sequence for non towing is 1;3;5;6;7;8;9;10.

If you have 34 " tires and a 3:31 axle ratio, you need all the horsepower you can find.

Check your calendar. It’s 2022 not 2002….

I understand what you’re saying and it makes no sense. The conversation has nothing to do with gassers and they can’t tear up a 14 bolt anyway.
Your reasoning just made no sense. Plan and simple , whether you point out that gassers had a lighter duty axle for years or not.
Fact remains there are AAM 11.8 and 12.0 axles already being produced. And given AaM used to be GM and now is GMs sole source supplier as of recent, what you said made even less sense.

The Super Duty Order Bank for Job 1 orders will open 10/27/22 with production beginning in early February. The only Models that will be produced for Job 1 are XL, XLT, and Lariats. Note: XLTs with Tremor package will not be produced until Job 2. Lariats will only be available with limited options.

The Order Bank will accept and price Job 2 in late February. This will include all Models as it will expand out to include King Ranch, Platinum, Limited as well as full line of options for the XLT and Lariat. Production on Job 2 will start in April.

^^^ That’s not good news. I might have to see if I can find a deal on a Ram or GM…. or worse case scenario keep the old Ford for another year. Any word on the high output Powerstoke? Unless the high output is going to deliver close to 1200 lb ft of torque as well as a significant bump in pony power I’m thinking there’s not going to be very many people willing to fork out extra for a water cooled turbo.

I agree with the not good news. Looking at retiring and thinking of getting my last truck. Haven't got to talk to my dealer yet, but hear there is very limited allocations for dealers.

It's time for a RAM. Cummins/AISIN and Factory Rear Air Ride with either Limited or LongHorn options. Mine is going on 8 years with no desire to trade it.
