I’m planning on ordering a ‘23 Super Duty as soon as the order banks open. I don’t need more power and I’ll probably only keep the truck for a year. How many of you are going to be willing to pay an extra $1500 (just a guess) for a high output Powerstroke? Is the larger turbo of the high output going to cost more at the pumps? I think justifying the Cummins high output is a little easier as it includes the Aisin transmission. The only way it makes sense for me with the Powerstroke is if I’m going to get my money back on the resale.

My only question is why order a new truck (and wait several months to get it) if you only plan to keep it for a year?

From what I have read the high output will include a water cooled turbo and some other parts.

So as far as fuel use goes:

So diesels are rated in amount of fuel flow/HP. The more the HP output is the more the fuel the pump can inject into the engine.

Take for example my 6.5 diesel rated from the factory at 200HP. That's all the fuel that can be injected into the engine...200HP worth at WOT.

My Duramax can inject 365HP worth of fuel at WOT.

So at WOT my Dmax will use a lot more fuel than my 6.5 diesel. If I limited my throttle setting to 200HP on my Dmax it would get "approximately" the same fuel mileage as my 6.5 diesel.

I towed the same trailer with my 6.5 as with my Dmax. They both got about the same mileage towing the same trailer.

Bottom line is, if you have more HP AND use more HP it will cost you more fuel.

Personally I think the HO option is for bragging rights and not needed unless your towing 30k up 10% grades all the time.
