Skunks -- sitting by a campfire one night and had my hand down beside my chair and felt something soft and furry, looked down and I was petting a skunk. I said to my wife don't move or anything but there is a skunk beside me, she jumped up knocking her chair over and ran to the trailer, slammed the door and locked it? The skunk didn't care and after a couple of minutes he wandered off. I asked her why she locked the door, she said it seemed like a good idea at the time

Those skunks are clever, I've heard they carry a few different RV keys knowing one will unlock many...

We've had different raccoons as pets. Imagine the results when a adult coon learns to open a cabinet and finds a box of corn starch??
On a fishing trip on Canyon Lake I slept on an air mattress & sleeping bag on the ground. In the middle of the night I woke up by something pawing through my hair. I knew it wasn't a mountain lion so I slowly looked up into the beady black eyes of a skunk a couple inches away. I slowly looked away and waited 'till he was satisfied. He had four buddies who just wandered through our camp, unmolested by me of course, then wandered off...Some folks are afraid of wild animals. They have no reason to harm a person unless a person threatens to harm them. They know they could be injured in a fight and not be able to hunt. Four coyotes cornered our 94# Pit Bull/ Mastiff and didn't attack. The dog was smart enough not to start anything. The occasion was mutually understood and ended.. It's a shame humans aren't that smart..
My uncle told me when he was a teenager he had a pet skunk that he took with him when he visited his buddy working in the kitchen of a fancy restaurant. The skunk wandered away from him and into the dining room. The women went into a screaming panic . That scared the critter and he emptied the restaurant. My uncle said he grabbed the skunk and got out of there.. It seems skunk stories are most all funny depending of your point of view. I've been sprayed once. Walking a game trail at night I didn't see him coming towards me. I brushed him with my foot and he brushed back. I had to bury my clothes. Not his fault ......

When were tents great at keeping out large carnivores?
As a kid in the 70-80's, my pup tent wouldn't stop an angry rabbit...but never really had an issue with one either.

Another time at Goose Island SP I had a family of skunks wander thru my campsite at night followed shortly by a family of coons and then followed by family of possums and last but not least a lone Armadillo. They all took their time at my site. Earlier just before dark a coon stole some of my FF but I was quick to protect my juicy hamburger.
I watched all this from inside my tent with a large flash light and expected an alligator to be next. Slept in the truck after that and just in time due to a heavy rain storm that drowned my tent. Just lucky I guess.

My husband and I like "camping" with various forms of equipment. We have a FW, a pop-up, and a tent. While tenting one trip, we fell fast asleep with our dogs in the tent with us. In the middle of the night, I heard crunching and sniffing just outside my side of the tent. I woke up and listened, while my heart was beating over 100 bpm! It kept sniffing my side of the tent, then all of a sudden I heard someone outside yell, "Shep, get over here!"

Had a friend who was in national guard and they went to White Sands each year for summer camp. He was a large and very strong person. Well one night someone threw a live round in the fire pit outside of his pup tent. Someone also had thrown a tin of jelly into the pit. Well an armadillo ran across his chest and naturally he set up at the same time the round cooked off and the hot jelly exploded and hit him in the chest. He said he thought he was dead. Those near by said he shredded that pup tent getting out.

White Sands sounds as nice a place for a National Guard summer camp as Fort Irwin! I'm surprised I survive July and August at Irwin.

Very true. A piece of nylon or canvas is not going to stop anything. Claws and/or teeth can easily get through that.
