RE: Fire, Cast Iron, and Soot

First item to remember regarding Dutch oven cooking is the “fire” should be 2/3 on the lid and 1/3 on the bottom.
Curious what you mean by this
I assume he's talking about top heat. Some Dutch Ovens have a flat top and a ridge that allows the stacking of coals on top of the unit. This evens out the heat and it cooks more like an oven. If you're familiar with a Caja China, it uses 100% top heat to roast large items, including whole pigs.

RE: Is Facebook killing this site?

Now for my opinion. No facebook is not ruining this site, or any others I use. Facebook is causing great divisions in our society and an extremely effective way that dangerous mis information is disseminated. I believe Zuckerberg will go down in history as one of the most destructive forces in the world.
Facebook, Twitter, and Truth Social et al are simply reflections of society at large. As long as beliefs are presented as fact, we'll have differences. The platform makes little difference.

RE: Ford Gets 9.2 Billion Bailout errrr Loan

Direct oil and gas subsidies are far greater than $2b.
Huh?, the number is 9.2 Billion.
"The United States provides a number of tax subsidies to the fossil fuel industry as a means of encouraging domestic energy production. These include both direct subsidies to corporations, as well as other tax benefits to the fossil fuel industry. Conservative estimates put U.S. direct subsidies to the fossil fuel industry at roughly $20 billion per year"
Wonderful. So they handout a subsidy to one corporation worth almost 50% of the subsidies handed out to an entire Industry which is hundreds of times larger? That's great...................for someone, the average taxpayer not so much.
Read that again.
If you're OK with $20bb in subsidies for oil (that makes record profits every year) you should be OK with $2b to save jobs.

RE: Ford Gets 9.2 Billion Bailout errrr Loan

Lot of difference between a loan to a financially stable and viable company and giving money to one that is not.
Sure is LOL
……….
Ford had a $2 billion loss in expected profits, and yet still had a year end profit of $10.4 billion. I call that financially stable and viable.
Fords $2 billion loss was due to their EV division and Quality issues resulting in too many warranty repairs. Ford's CEO Farley (who needs to be fired) stated it will rely on it's ICE division to financially support it's EV division while he lays off ICE division employees.
Direct oil and gas subsidies are far greater than $2b.

European Union subsidies are estimated to total 55 billion euros annually.

RE: Medicare Supplemental vs Medicare Advantage HMO

I belong to a very large support board for people with various cancers and other serious or chronic conditions. Medicare Advantage plans are referred to as Medicare Disadvantage plans. Tread carefully, and definitely buyer beware. I'm not yet 65 but when the time comes I will go with traditional Medicare. Because of what I've learned on that board there's no way I'd even consider a (dis)Advantage plan. If I had a Plan F there's no way I'd let it go.
As someone with 2 types of blood cancer (myeloma and AML), I have to agree. Any "Advantage" plan is location specific and if you need treatment outside of your location or another state, there will be issues.

RE: Nascar Follies

Haven't really followed Nascar since Dale died. But when the first Tesla hits the track I'll be watching.
It won't be a Tesla. Joe Gibbs built an EV Toyota test platform. Indycar already has an electric series and it's very successful.
There is not an EV that can go 400-500 miles on a charge. Current pit stop 11-13 seconds, EV pit stops will give viewers time for a short nap.
However, they will figure it out or lose their money pit.
Not all NASCAR races are 500 miles.
The hybrid era is here. NASCAR is always slow to adapt but if you listen to Dale Jrs podcast you know it's on the way.

RE: Let’s talk biscuits

A pizza stone helps.
Not here. A pizza stone equalizes the bottom heat. OP is having an issue with top heat. A pizza stone doesn't help this but it does help baking overall. Better than NOT putting in a stone.

RE: Let’s talk biscuits

Thus are the limitations of RV ovens. No top heat.
Try cooking them inside a Dutch Oven with the lid on. Biscuits like a high heat of around 400-425.

RE: RAM EV

How many units comprise “a whack load”? Because in all of my travels I’ve only seen one EV towing a trailer. That was a Tesla towing a 23’ wake boat in Boulder CO, and the owner said he tows from town a very short distance to the lake.
I’m not sure why you are so adamant in your defense of EVs as TVs. The simple fact is they aren’t ready for prime time for the vast majority of users, and won’t be for the foreseeable future.
We have a "whackload" here in NORCAL. I see them almost daily...towing. I live just off CA 101 at the Mendo line and it's RV central here, with Cloverdale (our little town) marked as a rest stop on many NAV units and software. They park across the street at the park and have lunch. We also have a KOA and a Thousand Oaks campground (avoid this one).
If you haven't seen them, it's because you haven't noticed. I see more every day.
The simple fact is they aren’t ready for prime time for the vast majority of users
This has been said over and over. No one's arguing, no one has suggested (that I've seen) that an EV should be pulling a 5th wheel or a larger TT for 500 miles. CLEARLY, EVs don't currently have the range but that doesn't mean much at the rate we're improving batteries and charging capabilities. The towing range isn't touted as one of the benefits. Lack of maintenance, performance, and total cost of ownership is still advantageous enough for many to happily switch to EVs.

RE: Nascar Follies

An amazing performance by Reddick, an absolutely flawless race from start to finish, from strategy to race craft. He dominated all weekend.
The race in general was very entertaining, and I especially liked seeing my boy "Rodney Sandstorm" (Jordan Taylor) finish his first NASCAR race in good company! Kimi and Button too.

RE: Seven States to Ban the Sale of Gas Powered Cars in 2035

...In any event, people don't think this can happen. I'm telling you it can with just a stroke of a pen. I haven't talked to anybody in Air Quality in a long time but last time I did the guy I talked to said CARB was trying to outlaw my 2006 John Deere tractor. I don't know about the rest of you but a 2006 tractor with 325 hours on it is brand new to me...
Turtle - I understand how you would feel if you had an outlawed JD. I am willing to help you out. I can assist you with compliance if the time comes. Maybe we could find a CyberTruck to tow it to the California border.
Maybe there will be a cash for tractors, where they pay you to get a new electric tractor?
Lol. Sad but, well, sad.
We should start a go fund me for all Californians that are stuck there and having their personal freedoms wiped out before their own eyes!
I’ll think of you guys while I’m using my 2 stroke weed whipper and gas powered mower!
CA is banning emissions. Florida is banning books.
Polluting is not a "personal freedom."
Why do the mods allow these bash CA to continue? The last 4 pages are a political rant.

RE: Seven States to Ban the Sale of Gas Powered Cars in 2035

More ignorant politicians jumping on the BS green wagon. IF it happens 2034 will be a big sales year for ICE vehicles.
The dummies haven't said what happens to the ICE you own. Will you have to sell out if state? Wil the trade-in be worth nothing because the dealer can't sell the used unit?
If the law only applies to new units, the price of used is going to sky rocket (more than it already has).
Even if enacted ICE units will be on the road till 2055 or later.
I'll stay in Iowa where common sense prevails.
It would help if you read the article.

RE: Seven States to Ban the Sale of Gas Powered Cars in 2035

It doesn't ban registration in those states. Buyer will go to next state, buy what vehicle he wants, ICE Hybred, register it and drive it. Sometimes politicians have really, really stupid ideas. And, used vehicle prices will skyrocket again in those states.
Why will used prices rise? And if it doesn't happen until 2035 why do you care? Pure speculation and hyperbole.
Yes, politicians have bad ideas, yet we keep sending them back.

Right, because drilling for fossil fuels and the refinements of those fuels is clean and without excess energy use. Never any problems.
Actually, unlike many close minded people I like hearing and reading two different sides of a topic. Cheers to your travels
Yours as well.

RE: Electric and ICE forever together?

No one is forcing anything. No one is forcing you to go to a dealership and buy an EV today or tomorrow.
Stop fussing over stuff that isn't happening. Stop creating conspiracies that aren't there.
Ah but you're wrong. The government has pumped Billions into the EV industry making Musk the richest man in the world. Where does that money come from? It comes from tax payers. So yeah, I am being forced to contribute whether I want to or not. And if you haven't missed it by the dozens of pages of these arguments, that's the biggest rub. It is being forced - literally forced, because EV's couldn't make it on their own for the past 100 years. Capital injection from taxpayers backed by cherry picked, half baked science, forcing auto makers to bend to your will is not the way to go about it all in the mantra of saving the planet. But Ev's won't save the planet. This isn't about being resistant to change, or being dumb or being a science denier. The contrary - it's about peeing down my back and telling me it's raining while forcing me to pay for it.
So which EV are you getting and when do you pick it up?
In for pics.

RE: Electric and ICE forever together?

Nope, it's because no one can answer the question. EV's aren't solving anything. They're just creating new and different problems along with exacerbating some old ones.
Because it's *not* a question, it's your opinion. Others have given theirs. You disagree. Nothing more.
