RE: Inverter Upgrade

By the way, I have 50 amp shore power and 350 amps in lithium house batteries. The simplest way would be a dog bone since both legs of the 50 service need to be powered. Manually switch the fridge to propane; turn off the electric side of the water heater, and unplug the converter. Once you know it works, add a sub panel for the outlets that need to be powered.

RE: The time has come to replace the cooling unit in my fridge.

If/when mine dies I'll go to a 12 volt cooling unit.

RE: Inverter Upgrade

The simple way is to plug in the shore power cord to the inverter, while turning off the converter. Fridge set to propane. If that works out well, then add a sub panel for the items you don't wish to power from the inverter. Is the RV a 30 amp service? How many amp-hours of battery bank do you have?

RE: How long should a battery last?

If it is an absorption fridge on propane it may draw 34 amp-hours per day. 34 x 12 = 408 watt hours.

RE: How long should a battery last?

If he's boondocking the way I think of boondocking, he won't be in a campground with rules but rather a dispersed spot with only the neighbors he traveled with. I do realize there are campgrounds without hookups so valid points on generator hours/rules. My initial generator set up will be to run it during daylight hours and evening till bed. Only shut it off when sleeping. However, eventually, I would like to only need a few hours of run time a day. Two ways to reduce run time. 1. increase battery bank capacity. or (better) 2. add a solar panel charging system. or (best) Do both 1 and 2 Have fun!

RE: batteies

Hi ck1246, Welcome to the forums. What is themake and model of existing converter? Which Li batteries are you considering?

RE: How long should a battery last?

pianotuna said: "12.3 volts is 50% If it is a marine battery that's already pushing it too low." I'm thinking 12.3 is about 70%, and not an issue, until getting closer to 12.0, which will shorten life of battery. Deep cycle 12.06 = 50% Marine 12.2 = 50%

RE: LiFePO4 Converter Change?

Power factor on PD units is 0.7. Power factor on powermax is 0.85. (they call it efficiency) https://www.boatandrvaccessories.com/en-ca/products/powermax-pm3-75-12-volt-75-amp-converter-charger you couldn't even link to one that is a LI converter eh haha You couldn't be bothered to accurately check the power factor but rather just assumed because others complained that the Power Max was worse than the PD. Apparently the exact opposite is true.

RE: How long should a battery last?

...They don't install absorption fridges anymore. That's what I've gathered from the forums. Followed by grumpy scoffs from boondockers! LOL You mentioned that you're in a one-off boondock situation so not worth investing in any more gear. So you can fire up your tow vehicle and plug in the trailer via 7-pin to get some juice into the battery. Without upgrades to that wire path, it will not provide a whole lot of current for charging. But it is equipment you already have. How long should I run it for if the battery goes down below 12V? I do boondock with others, but they have a generator. That generator is not mine, and is not available for this one off time. I do plan to get a generator, but not likely for this trip. 12.3 volts is 50% If it is a marine battery that's already pushing it too low. It would be pretty hard to say how long--but assuming an 80 amp-hour group 24, discharged to 12.3 (40 amp hours down), about 2 hours with #4 jumper cables. The computer that controls charging "listens" to the starter battery. That tapers the voltage so that not much charging is done. A dc to DC charger would solve that. My dc to DC does about 17 amps at idle. It is rated for 20 amps. Charging by idling the tow vehicle would be my last choice. If the tow vehicle is diesel, make sure it is on high idle. My first choice for a "one off" trip would be to use auxiliary battery to supplement the group 24. Have fun on the trip.

RE: Water saver for shower.

My unit had a previous owner who never got to use it. They had added a 2nd tank. I'm lucky to have 66 gallons.

Hi, Almost no one boondocks with a single group 24. Consider upgraded the capacity. I've had great luck with reconditioned telcom jars.

RE: 30amp surge protector on 50amp line

Cummins12V98, The Sola Basic is listed in my signature. It is able to handle 4000 watts--which makes it a great match for a 30 amp RV. They do make a unit that has two legs for use on a 50 amp RV, too--but I don't know the specifications. I use it a lot in cold weather to get the most from my electric heaters. As you probably know the power varies by the square of the voltage.

RE: 30amp surge protector on 50amp line

My lowest voltage is 93. The Autoformer takes care of that. I do use some surge. I have an AutoFormer but I don't think it will boost 93 volts to an acceptable voltage for some devices. Hi, Mine is a Sola Basic with 3 levels of boost and 2 of buck. At 93 volts it brings it to about 118 volts.

Time for us frogs to jump out of the warming water. The latest report suggests there are only 10 years left to mitigate (not avoid) global climate change.

RE: 30amp surge protector on 50amp line

Better to check if there is a ems in the new digs first. You can use the 30 amp surge but it needs to feed both legs. Otherwise some circuits may not work. The RV you had before was 30 amp--the new one will have the same constraints. Microwave (13 amps) and water heater (12 amps) and roof air (16 amps) = overload the pedestal breaker One other work around is possible--and that would be an inverter charger that has load support. My choice would be to get a 50 amp ems, not just a surge device.
