RE: Why is the Hemi Going Away

Ok. But can’t Stellantis just make some cars that generate the same compliance credits and buy them from themselves? Electric cars are the number one selling cars in the world. Wouldn’t it make sense for Stellantis to make some and get the credits? That's exactly why the Hemi is going away- to help increase the CAFE numbers so that Stellantis (or whomever owns Chrysler this week) doesn't have to pay for the carbon credits. It will be interesting to see if Tesla continues to be profitable after they are no longer selling carbon credits. I imagine they will, since they were able to leverage the profits from selling the credits to accelerate R&D of models like the Y. I kind of agree with StonedPanther on the general silliness of compliance credits- nothing but an environmental shell game. Kind of like destroying a wetland area but "creating" another wetland 50 miles away to make up for it. I dont care to get into argument about enviroment, but right now theres about 150 forest fires burning in Canada due to very dry hot weather sending smoke all the way to NYC making breathing very dificult. Maybe its normal, maybe result of human created polution I dont know. Anyhow My next car will be Tesla so dont need to buy expensive gasoline and breathe poisonous exhaust fumes. Maybe we need electric trains everywhere to reduce polution This is how you Build Back Better :) https://youtu.be/BCLuWr1iHok

RE: Why is the Hemi Going Away

Electric cars are the number one selling cars in the world. What? In 2022 EV sales worldwide made up @ 14% of all car sales. In the US that number was somewhere a little north of 7%. Buying compliance credits from themselves makes no economic sense whatsoever One could argue that compliance credits in general make no sense whatsoever, no matter who is buying or selling them or mandating them to begin with. Sure. But the number one selling car is electric. Not gas. The Tesla model Y dethroned the Toyota Corolla as the number one selling car this year. The rest is just production. As production ramp up. That takes time. I can’t figure out the compliance credits either. I just don’t understand why they would buy them from another company when they could just generate their own by making electric vehicles. Weird. Fwiw Stelantis is begging Canadian Gov to lend/give em milions $ so it can build battery factory in Windsor Ontario.

How do you measure the ambient temperature? Revised to read: How do you measure the temperature of the air around your rig? I used to have APP on my phone that was quite acurate but deleted it due to much spam ADverts :)

RE: Thoughts on a plug-in hybrid conversion

Hello! I am the founder of a Seattle-based startup. We are developing a family of universal retrofit kits that convert existing vehicles into plug-in hybrids. Our first product will be for pickup trucks, and I am hoping to get some thoughts from this and other RV communities on what features may be desirable, what the major concerns would be, etc. My thinking is that for people who use their trucks for daily driving but also frequent towing, our product could be very attractive, especially because it can be used as a generator. In a nutshell, the kits add an electric propulsion system good for 30-45 miles of range without removing the engine. The battery pack and power electronics get mounted in the bed like a small bed toolbox. We remove a section of the tubular part of the driveshaft and install a “coaxial drive unit” that has an electric motor stack, a planetary transmission, and a multi-mode clutch that can shift-on-the-fly. The clutch allows EV operation while disconnecting the engine/tranny, engine operation while disconnecting the electric motors, and generator mode which uses the engine to spin the electric motors without turning the wheels. A linkage that connects to the axle tubes provides reaction torque. We’ve prototyped a simplified version of the system and tested in on real roads. Because the systems are universal, we can mass-produce them, have them installed by third-parties, and hit a much lower price point than other conversions (approximately $7k-10K covering the range from midsize to ¾ ton). I’d love to get the group’s thoughts and gage the level of interest. Fyi GM tried that many years back and it went nowhere 100 mpg ev hybrid truck, https://youtu.be/4XHbQLfgI6g

Id recomend getting Li ion batteries LFP? Cost more but much lighter and can be discharged to zero without damage. Will Prowse chanel has good info on everything

RE: New EPA Requirements

Also EV cost way less money to drive. And lithium is very easy to harvest or mine, oil production is 100x more destructive. I own an electric car and no it doesn't. I've done the math many times on this forum. In fact, if I ever get my hybrid car back from the shop I will only run it on gas to save money. You keep on telling yourself that. This Super Fund will last forever. Forever is a long time. You dont drive Tesla= the best most eficent w best SCharging network. When if you ever do calculate the cost again. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/stories/2020/03/lithium-mining-what-you-should-know-about-the-contentious-issue.html#:~:text=Where%20is%20lithium%20available%20from,China%20(1%20million%20tons). How do the mining methods differ? Put simply, lithium from Australia comes from ore mining, while in Chile and Argentina lithium comes from salt deserts, so-called salars. The extraction of raw materials from salars functions as follows: lithium-containing saltwater from underground lakes is brought to the surface and evaporates in large basins. The remaining saline solution is further processed in several stages until the lithium is suitable for use in batteries.

RE: New EPA Requirements

Looks like the new EPA requirements will be forcing the auto industry to shift to EV vehicles at a faster pace at a time when EV's and the power grid is not able to support this change on this proposed timeline. Link I think Blinden is just trying to apeal to voters. No one has to force anyone to buy EVs. Tesla is so popular it has waiting line of buyers. And their eficient production alows it to lower prices to efectively destroy the competiton. Even IF legacy auto makers could build at same cost parity, their stealerships would add huge mark up making Tesla better deal every time.

RE: New EPA Requirements

I am hoping a change at the top, will stop this ridiculousness. Ah yes, the ever popular ridiculousness of trying to save our environment. If every vehicle - car, plane, train, truck, tractor in America was suddenly electric, and every home possible had their own charger, charging stations were sufficiently available, and the grid could support real time charging the impact on climate / global warming will be negligible especially if you factor in the damage done to the environment from all the destructive mining required for the minerals. But you can’t flip a switch to make it happen. Americans are going to go through times to get all electric for questionable benefit. Im not worried about global warming, few degrees wont make any diference imo. However people up north where permafrost melts can make their houses sink into the mud. And make driving on the tundra imposible. Main advantage of EVs are it doesnt polute air with STINKY EXHAUST FUMES which kills milions of people and make many sick. Also EV cost way less money to drive. And lithium is very easy to harvest or mine, oil production is 100x more destructive.

RE: New EPA Requirements

Regardless of the environment, I would like to see the major oil exporting countries become irrelevant. Primarily Middle East and Russia. Too much money and power in the wrong hands. Wow realy, what did ME and Rusia did to deserve such hate. we are very reliant on UAE and rusian oil if you didnt know. We also buy tons of Rusian titanium our aircraft manufacturers need to stay in busines. NASA uses rusian rockets to deliver stuff and people to space station Huge majority of our citizens are misinformed by our Gov controled media about Rusia and China also. RE: Weird sounds at night

Im in sticks n brics and hear squirels runing on the roof and everywhere else scratching and hiding nuts in many places even under my truck frame. At night I saw skunk go by but it didnt make any noise. One night Ive heard awful noise in carport sounded like a bear riping stuff apart but it was only a possum snooping around looking for some food I guess Tried to chase it away with a broom but the rascal climbed on a beam and wouldnt let go,so I went to sleep. :)

RE: RAM EV

Looks like RAM is full in on the EV movement. One thing interesting is RAM followed Fords design logic in that their EV truck looks similar to their ICE truck, unlike GM made their EV trucks looks totally different than their ICE trucks. Link Link2 More EV the better bring it on. However I see few problems. Bed is too short. And IF you put camper or cap on it you wont be able to open those fender storage bins. :R
