RE: Route to McCall Idaho

I pulled a 23 ft. boat up 55 from Boise to Lake Payette State Park. A beautiful road but intimidating. My trip was in a pouring rain, and the road follows the Payette River which could have been best described as a long waterfall. No guard rails in many area and a river I could not have escaped from. No way would I do it in winter. There is a pretty decent climb outside of Emmett.
Either way is about the same.
Agree w both.

I've never heard of them. I think a hardshell rooftop tent would be a better idea.

RE: Soaring Eagle Campers?

I've come to the conclusion that there is rv'ing and camping and an infinite number of points on the line btwn the 2. I find myself on the camping end of the spectrum in that I bring everything I need to camp outdoors. Others bring everything they need so they can have their home on wheels. Of course I'm not as old as many of you so as the the years roll on I may not be physically able to continue w a minimalist style.
I'm probably going from a fully equipped Class B back to a four wheel camper shell model w nothing but a bed, solar, and batteries. Everything else I can bring as needed for a particular trip. My hesitation is my wife prefers more amenities, such as a shower, toilet, and sink w running water that I can easily do w/out or substitute a temporary solution. For instance in warm weather we might try to camp near a hot spring, stream or lake so we can swim, stay in a motel every few nights or pay for a shower.

RE: Site squatters

2 years ago near Challis, ID a man asked a group of campers to vacate a campsite and they refused. The man was later shot to death after threatening the group by a member of the group who happened to be a sheriff from a county in N Idaho. It turns out the man that was killed was grieving the death of his son and the campsite he wanted was one he used to share w his son.
Lots of sad stories and whacked out people everywhere and an absolute boatload of weapons. I'm finding the solitude of off season camping in the middle of nowhere in NV being a refreshing change from the many inconsiderate people that are all about "me."
The squatters that leave their setups for months on public lands well in excess of the stay limits I find particularly infuriating.

RE: Concerns about golf cart roof in back of pick up

I know you're asking about the roof, but we had he windshield of a cart fall out while riding on a golf course a couple days ago so be aware that all accessories need to be secured.

RE: 2024 Chevy 3500 verses 2023 F350

The range between the 7.3 and Dmax will be about the same since in general the difference in efficiency is about the same as the difference in tank size.
But I don’t understand the reason for the apples vs oranges comparison.
The most important reason is I don't need the towing capability of a diesel, the additional expense or the need to mess w DEF, but the range a dmax provides would overcome the 12 gallon smaller tank.
It's pretzel logic on my part, I realize, that's intertwined w my preference for GM over Ford and gas(in my application) over diesel.

RE: 2024 Chevy 3500 verses 2023 F350

What is an approximate range of a CC LWB F350 w 7.3 gasser (48gal) vs the 3500 w duramax (36 gal) with a load of 3000lbs (pop-up TC, people, gear)?
(The truck would be stored all winter in an unheated garage so a gasser would avoid frozen DEF.)
DEF freezing is not an issue. Long exposure to high temps while stored is a bigger issue. All DEF vehicles have a heater to thaw the DEF
As for range our CC Duramax 2015.5 4x4 easily averages 18+ unloaded. pulling a 6500 lb cargo trailer 12-13 so your configuration would be somewhere in between for us. Pulling a 10K TT, 10-12
Thanks, should have added 4x4 to my description.

Does 12 gallons more fuel (and a local Ford dealer) make it worth buying a Ford for a long time GM fan?
We like the lonely stretches of NV a lot.

RE: Rant: recreation.gov

So yeah, email access while traveling is steadily improving and more people have it even in remote areas.
It's only going to get better with time, so the OPs idea that some people don't have access will become rarer and rarer, so he can adapt to the modern world or become the old guy yelling at kids to stay off his grass.
And those areas with no coverage are becoming more and more rare.
Add in options like Starlink...We've been around the Yukon this summer with high speed internet 50-75miles to the nearest city or cell coverage.
So while it's not 100% yet, it is steadily getting more and more common for folks to have access to their email even in remote areas.
There are plenty of areas w no cell coverage, particularly when out camping. As mentioned above just spent 4 days w no cell service.
And in my complaint in the OP no notification by any method should have been necessary at all. I did have a fully paid reservation before the arbitrary cancellation by rec.gov
No chance of me getting starlink........I'm out there to disconnect from civilization.
