RE: Help making a decision on truck purchase.

Keeping what you got isn't free. I'm already off to a rip roaring start this year. Went to pull my trusty 2002 Silverado 3500 out of the barn, won't barely move. Bunch of transmission codes. I think my 2015 Silverado 1500's torque converter is coming apart too. It's got the "shutter" that everyone posts about and it's right in that mileage range where the torque converters go bad. Just Saturday it started throwing a message "Service 4WD" and won't shift into 4x4. A common issue at least in the 88+ ifs units, was for the 4wd electric part to engage the coupling will go out. Its been awhile since I have heard about this issue..... Good Luck with this. Marty

RE: Help making a decision on truck purchase.

cost of new vs used, assuming used is paid for, used can be perile more expensive than new, depending upon the what needs repairs. add in IF you use the rig for work, lost days of income etc. At one time it was best to get rid of working pickups in the 100-125k mile relm. today closer to 200k miles. IF repairs start costing more per year tgan payments, better to get a new one. marty

Turtle, I know about the dam issue here in Wa st. Along with some not too happy about the wind mills too. Not positive about what is the true answer to the issues are. Probably a mixture of some sort. Nothing is totally positive at the end. marty

RE: Help making a decision on truck purchase.

Jerry, Looking up the specs, they do say a gvwr of 7000. BUT it has two 3700 lb axles! So the trailer suspension shoukd be able to go higher. The BIG question woukd be frame etc. When all is said and done, with proper loading etc, the three I saw online at Winnebago are towable by a majority of the 15 series trucks. I can find exceptions, my family of 6 in a crew cab with 1409-1500 lbs of HW, to name one that a 15 woukd not work. Id be pitentially over loading the 9200 gvw 3500's ive had in the past. I woukd pull them as i woukd not be over thee RA by 500-1000 lbs. IF the OP need a newer truck, a properly setup 15 should be looked at for the reasons they stated. A 15 will not be smaller in size propirtions generally speaking enough to say its smaller. marty

RE: Seven States to Ban the Sale of Gas Powered Cars in 2035

Turtle Biggest issue I see with lithioum battery setup is the mining part, Hopefully as I mentioned before, as part of permitting, the mine will have to have the most recent clean mining techniques, along with updating as this mine goes on. With the ability for local federal government agencies to shut down or fine if rules are not being followed Fines need to be outragiously high, or the mine will do things incorrectly, pay the fine wich is cheaper than per latest regs..... Reality, which is worst, oil or lithium mining? niether today, is what many of us call clean or healthy in many ways. marty

RE: Help making a decision on truck purchase.

Grit, That part where it list wieght, later the hitch wieght.... a bit confusing to me... as most trailer soecs list an axle, hitch and total.... assuming you're correct, I'm reading and understanding correctly. Yes, you woukd have about 1400 lbs of payload for clothes, food etc. I'll stick with one has up to around 7000 on acles, an additional 1500 hitch, for a total of around 8500 gvw. I never have liked gvwr's that are not listed as the sum of the parts. I would bet a proper setup GM with a 5.3, 6.2 coukd pull this trailer at wieghts im showing. Even the TD or turbo 4cyl have appropriate specs to do so. its more of an issue from a paylod standpoint for the trucks themselves. I also think my 4.3 woukd generally speaking pull it too. Elevation might be an issue above 5-6000'. I'll still get from point A to B in one piece. My biggest worry would be the AAM 8.5" 10 bolt RA. A 9.5 like in the V8 rigs, no questions. no right or wrong per say. marty

RE: Seven States to Ban the Sale of Gas Powered Cars in 2035

Turtle, For long trips with larger loads, I'll ahree with your comments. I personally believe that in a few years the over 10,000-50,000 gvw rig doing local delivery with in cities at 100-200 mikes max per day are with in design relm. That could help in local pollution issues etc. Probably hence why some of us, see EV's as a good coice for some, not so great today for others. LP is another fuel, good for the city iI grew up in, most of the police, parks dept, DOT etc rigs are LP with some EV hybrids in the mix today. These alternate fuels can work. Yes ive shown a municipality as an example. I have family with hybrids, one bought a BMW EV recently. I dont see these working for me anytime soon. It woukd work for spouses rig. Cost will kill the EV option for many people. especially lower income. marty

RE: Help making a decision on truck purchase.

the trailers i looked up have what I will call an artificial low gvwr. Yes brochure is 7000 lbs. Empty wt is listed in the 5300-5600 lb on axles, 1100 on hitch. so about 400-500 lbs of payload. They do have two 3700 lb axles. In my view this trailer can go down the road at 7000 on axles 1400-1600 on the hitch. Which is doable by the heavier setup 15 series trucks. This is granted as large of a 5w I would want to tow. I woukd also assume OP is single or with a soiuse. If OP has 4 adult sized teens as I had, they woukd need a 25 series for oayload purposes I would also want a 15 with a min 9.5" RA. Toyota jas a 10.5" iirc on some models. At 7' wide, a 5w, aerodynic ussues will be less than a ball mount. if ordering new, the Ford with the HDPP or GM with its equal would be only choices imho. These two options give those rigs a payload in the 2500-3000 lb relm. As noted, going from a 4sp auto 25 series, to a newer 15 series with the 8 or 10 spd, even the 6 sp as I have, I went from 10-13 to 17-22 with my GM V6 with equal power to my vortec 350. Better overall performance. I am missing 1500 lbs of door sticker payload. Thats a semi easy fix. my 02 on this Marty

way2roll, While i stated a hopefull goal, i did not state some things that worry me. ie many of the things you mention. Which hopefully as part of permitting process, some of the things you mention will be ways to control run off, slides of left over muck etc. i have a (multiple/ superfund site in my backyard per say. dept of ecology etc, know their is no way to clean these places up. its more of a how to contain these sites. The one im thinking of, i drive in and on it weekly at a minimum. other projects like the oil line from canada to gulf states. i have no issues saying im ok with it, but the part some want to run across an aquifer, thru known sacred lands etc. Boo Hoo that the longer route costs more. At the end if the day, as noted my many, oil gets tax write offs for this, so we the people pay for it. Hopefully, their will be better options, better lives ahead. If not, hopefully some if us can say we tried. marty

for those of you that work or play in places that get somilar rules thrown at them..... how many have truly caused issues? how many got delayed due to technology being unable to do the requirement? so things get delayed..... i can think of MANY government recomendations and regs that got passed over my time on this planet. many that got delayed due to the abilities of industry etc for many reasons not able to meet the regs. EV vehicles have a place. At the moment, not able to meet specs for us all. Not a problem in my book today. When 2034 rolls around, hopefully tech, mines have opened to meet lithium and other material needs have come online, we might meet regs. If not, then relook at regs. Targeted emission regs on both gas and diesel rigs have moved due to the ability of industry to meet regs a few times. Vehicle manufactures have generally speaking met the MPG requirements, giving us more piwerful engines, cleaner burning, and better mpgs. LP as noted is goid for ICE rigs in a semi enclosed environment, ue fork lifts. Its been a decade or two since ive seen a gas or diesel smaller forklift. Theyve been DC or LP. Cutting emmisions way down. My grand daughter might see this new tech as the norm, kids are liking it. I hope it works.... marty

grit, if you want to complain about the car tab initative put lisence tabs at $35, they already are. Mr Eyman as he has muktiple times keeps putting this initative on the ballet. Issue is, in Wa st constitution, an initative can only effect one law. his one initative tries to remove sound transit taxes, at least one, if not 3-4 tax laws, tonnage fees, another law. Local coynty and city license tax laws..... you're a smart dude, i know this, opposite pokitics as me, but, do you really think what he wrote is not going to get repealed by these other jurisdictions? of course it will. As it should. the other recent initative that the NRA said they would appeal, the gun control one. That too was a very appealable initative. it also effected more than one state law. Did anyone apeal it? nope! i voted against both. As they were were uncobstitunal, illegal per our states laws. Complain if you want to about both. niether shoukd be on the books. marty

RE: F-250 vs F-350 srw

Spoon, I have no issues knowing a TV towing an RV has a greater than 99% chance of ever getting pulled over for wieght, stopping issues etc. As a commercial user og DOT class 2-6 driver owner of this size rig towing etc, for 40 yrs, I'm not worried about wieght issues generally speaking As I noted, at least here in Wa St, its a non-moving violation. I'm more worried about getting inspections for brake issues, stopping break away battery at less than 11.5v, debris falling out or off of the truck trailer etc. These being moving violation issues. those hurt me more in the long run. I've been pulled over at 150% ov my door sticker gvw, about 1000 lbs over my paid for registration. ALL i got was an up the registration by 2000 to next highr load class. $18 or there about cost per ton here. EVERY LDT I've owned here has had to have a paid for registration higher that the door sticker gvw based on how we have to buy tonnage. ie tare times 1.5 to next highest ton. My 1500 is 5200 x 1.5 = 7800 to 8000. My 7200 door sticker means squat! Marty

RE: F-250 vs F-350 srw

As ragfo points out, the only issue with what you have is a legal "CIVIL" liability if in an accident. From the legal standpoint of an LEO/CVEO or equal, as long as you have a paid for license and registration that is greater than what you weigh, no big deal. Also, assuming that you are under normal FBL regs per axel. FBL wise, you get 500 lbs per inch of tire up to 20K per axel. Assuming a typical 10-11" tire, you get 5000-5500 per corner, so 20-22K lbs total for the truck. You state you are at around 11500-12K lbs. So 8000-10K lbs under your max per the FBL's. If you were where I am in the State of washington, you buy yourself a 12K gvw plate, you're not going to get an overweight ticket! Even if you did, and overwieght ticket is like getting a parking ticket! It does not go on your driving record. WHere you can get into trouble, is if the LEO does a field test for stopping, you stop at a distance that is greater than the field test allows, you have a failed braking system, you cannot continue to drive the rig on the road. THAT TICKET is a moving violation, that ticket goes against your driving record, and gets shared with your insurance company. You will have to fix your failed brakes on the side of the road, or two said rig to a repair place......It might also mean unloading weight out of the rig if you have literally put too much weight on the rig for its braking ability. At the end of the day, it is up to the driver of a vehicle to decide if they have the correct one for the task at hand. I personally do not have an issue with what, how etc the OP is loaded at, and would drive the rig with out issues. Marty

I guess no one read this link I posted with over a 121 late model Aisin failures reported...y'all rather take jabs at each other then talk about the K1 snap ring failures on these new trucks :) https://www.cumminsforum.com/threads/2022-aisin-transmission-failures-information.2576640/page-21 not saying this isnt an issue.... it apoears to be one...... BUT, i saw and read what the issue is realky quick in comments. now comes the 127 out of how many units total.... now we're into the one airplane flight down a day.... woukd you fly again? DR loses 1 in 10 patients doing surgery, another is 1-1000 for same procedure...... With my blathering here. The clip issue in trans is and woukd be more of s concern that the video with comments making it apoear to be an over idling issue, which WILL cause issues with any manufactures diesel in a light duty vehicle ie under DOT class 3/14000 gvwr. marty

RE: 2002 3/4 Ton Heavy Duty Diesel Chevy 2500

TV trailer length ratio was developed by an RV consumer grouo many eons ago. went something like 110" of TV Wheel base to two 20' of trailer then 3" more per foot of trailer.... then of ALL contriversial BS, no rig under 110" of WB should tow a trailer. i would think if you're towing a 19' trailer, you'd want 107" min per above ratio.... As many note, controversy can occur. This was for back in the 50'/60's when most used sedans, station wagons basically based on an equal to a DOT class 1 under 6000 gvwr pickup. OP has a class 2b 8401-10,000 gvw rig. which imho should net him another 2-3' or 22-23' if trailer at 110". if he had a DW add another 2-3'. bed mount 5w/gooseneck, another 2-4'..... Assuming a preferred crew can, with the trailer balance appropriately front to rear, side to side. Tires inflated all around correct etc etc, They shoukd not have issues with a basic WD system. Reality, if the trailer can not be towed at 60-65 mph on a level freeway with out sway, or finger tip driving. You have an issue that needs fixing from a mechanical basis of the rigs! Once this is correct, mow ADD the approprita WD/anti sway bars. Then and ONLY then do you have a setup that is safe to tow! A hensley stopping sway on a trailer that sways, will sway out of control if it breaks down somehow. my 02 on this. marty

But as usual bashing a non subject.Hey, it's a nasty job, but someone has to do it. :) I was hoping IF there was a proven failure per say, it would be a bit sooner in the video as to what and how it occurred. I wont go as farvas Ron and say there are NO failures of the components... be them factory problem, or neglect etc from the owner of the rig. I've had ALL the above occur with things in my lifetime. I'm also one to ask, what things fail most often, repairs etc and why? Things break down! Im also not going to spend 20 min listening, or should i say readfing the CC part, with them going in circles either. RE: 2002 3/4 Ton Heavy Duty Diesel Chevy 2500

Grit I had NO problem hauling upwards of 3 tons locally with my SW 3500's with the same suspension as the OP's fathers truck! Would I do this towing a trailer for a LONGER trip, heck no! I usually put 2500-3000 lbs loaded on the truck with family of 6, dogs, canoe, rack cross bed tool box, and a whopping 700 lbs of HW for my 24' travel trailer. I wont mention the day at the scale at I90 and HWY 18 after sitting at ALpental parking lot for 3 days as it snowed some 4-6' up there, a foot or more down here, roof collapsed on a local Orielly's auto parts, Covered marina floats went down taking boats under them too.... I had over 6000 lbs of snow load on the truck and trailer! OUR trucks as you know can handle way more than rated depending on how speced to work. My tires on my truck are good to 3800 lbs or so, IF I keep the speed below 25mph, they are rated to 5700, as are ANY tires! SOme of the truck ratings thru the years have been reasonably correct, others, you have to question the engineers' thoughts. Like the one blathering in the duramax kitchen facilities during a tour I took back in September 01. Saying don't put 265-75-16 rubber on your DA combo! It would harm the motor, trans, electronics etc etc etc blather blather....... 04 model IIRC came out with a SW 3500. What tire was on it? Yep, that tire size that would blow up our beloved motor trans etc. IT WILL do it, but as I noted earlier, when folks bought the SW 2500's put 2 tons of hitch weight, they bottomed out as I have when you go over a speed bump too fast, hit the bottom of a hill then go back up quick. Also to those with the payload sticker on an 02. I'm seeming to recall my 2000 having one. Even my 81 had one per say, look in glove box for max camper load, add in 150 lbs per seat belt, you have max payload for that truck and EVERY truck rated to carry a camper I've had since then. That is how the max hitch weight of a 5W or BP trailer should be figured too. Them engineers wont figure that out for a bit either.... Marty

RE: I Bought Too Much Truck

Back in when you can. or drive thru the 2 spots in a row so you can drive out the other side. Latter works unless it is a one way aisle........ 30 years of driving crew cab std 8' bed trucks. ALso have 30 years driving my Navistar dump truck that is another 18" long in wheel base and 2' or so longer overall. The funny thing about the navistar, is it has a 54 degree front axle wheel cut, vs 45-50 on the three GM trucks. I can out turn the CC pickups but 5' or so. Reality, its easier to get into tight spots. You WILL get used to it!!! But I admit, my 1500 dual cab with a 6.5' short bed is nicer in many ways than the crew cabs. I just wish I could have found a heavier chassis version, ie one of them old styl 8600 gvwr 25 series trucks. THe current 10k+ SW 8 lug trucks are too much suspension IMHO for what I do. Marty
