RE: EV alternative for light/medium duty trucks

[email protected], now my Cheetos are going to be late!! What is going on here? Been out a month and they are already breaking down.
Musk said that the drivetrain is guaranteed to last 1 million miles and it happens to share many components with Tesla’s passenger vehicles.
Well hell. That didn't age well!!
It looks like the Tesla Semi is going to be the new Windows ME. Or perhaps the the Iphone 5C?
Oops, this is a towing forum so I will say maybe the Tesla Semi will be the newer 5.7 Olds diesel or the Ford 6.0 diesel? :B
Now come on fan bois start with the "it's a new product and there are bound to be problems." Go on.....lets hear the Tesla fans!!!

RE: EV alternative for light/medium duty trucks

....
Bottom line we need to get off fossil fuels as fast as we can.
Why?:W I know it's a joke but apparently somewhere between 7% and 14% of US adults are still climate change deniers. Scary isn't it?Would that be the same 7% to 14% who didn’t believe that Covid would kill 10 times more people than the flu? Well guess what?
You do know the death rate went DOWN during the woo flu don't you?
Imagine that Link:S And this during when the baby boomers are starting to kick off from old age.

RE: Filtering Our Diesel Storage Tanks For on Road Use

As said, the filters on your truck will take care of any particulate matter and other contamination. The only thing I "might" do is get a cheap water block filter in case any water gets in your bed tank.
CAT makes a really good water block filter.
Link
Yep, thanks Troy, that's the one I would get. I haven't checked in a long time but CAT filters were reasonably priced.....at least they were.

RE: Tesla delivers there first semi

Personally, I believe that either the quoted VP doesn't have a clue what he is talking about or there is much more to the range reduction than just weight and range. Note that O'Connell never said why the trips would be shorter or why just the initial trips will be shorter. Since he used the term "initially" it is implied that the trucks will eventually be put to work on longer trips.
My personal experience with a Tesla is that weight has almost nothing to do with range. The increased rolling resistance from the extra weight is nearly negligible. There is no way that a legal load would make power consumption increase by a factor of 4.
The reason that ICE engines are affect more by load is that every time they apply the brakes momentum is turned into heat and the only way to replace that momentum is by burning more fuel. An EV turns the motor into a generator which puts the momentum back into the battery for later use. About 10% of the energy is lost as heat but 85 to 90% gets put back to useful work. You can see that in the energy graph where the range actually comes back up when going down hills. You don't see that with ICE engines.
It’s not implied, it’s stated.
Have you done the math? I have. There is a reason that other electric trucks have x amount of range / KWH and and Tesla has 2X's-X/KWH. And it's not because they have a magic battery or battery formula. All you have to do is look at electric pickups and see what they get when towing a tiny trailer and then look at the numbers that Tesla is "alluding" to. All the other truck companies state their numbers and everything is in the open. Tesla is the only company where almost no numbers are given. Funny how that works hu? :S
BTW, you must have a magic Tesla car. Because the more people I pile in my electric car the less miles I get / KWH. It's math and it works. You can't even get a sun roof in my electric car because of the weight and aero penalty.

RE: Tesla delivers there first semi

Just a quick scroll through that video, something weird about those jersey barriers from someone who’s been in heavy highway work his entire career.
Aside from them appearing to be “used” IE a little chipped up at the ends, which makes sense, they are far “whiter” colored than any of the million yards of concrete I’ve poured, set barriers, been around.
That in itself is not a dead giveaway. But the fact that there are no loops for the barrier pins nor evidence of cutoff loops in the ends of the barrier means they are definitively not actual concrete barriers. Period end of story.
They are Jersey barrier shaped pieces of something.
I said that a long time ago Grit. But the fan boi's went all cracker dog crazy on me. :B
And now this comes out: PepsiCo’s new Semis can haul Frito-Lay food products for around 425 miles (684 km), but for heavier loads of sodas, the trucks will do shorter trips of around 100 miles (160 km), O’Connell said.
Link
Weird? 25 tons of chips must weigh less that 25 tons of Pepsi? Wait what? Ooooooooooohh never mind. It must be the same reason 25 tons of feathers weighs less than 25 tons of lead. Silly me anyway!!!
When Tusk said "fully loaded semi" he must have meant "fully loaded with chips" I get it now!!! :B

RE: Overloaded or wrong truck?

Since everybody is guessing here is my guess. Mechanical resonance frequency failure.
My Chebby long bed 4 door had this problem on a road near me. It was a concrete freeway that had the expansion joints just at the wrong point for "my truck."
You could feel the frame flex on the thing when going down this road. Very weird feeling. Didn't happen on any other road I went on. A few years later they re-did the road and it never happened again.
BTW the new forum layout sucks IMHO. The quote box was great before and now it sucks There I said it. :B

RE: Tesla delivers there first semi

The narrator lost me in the first 30 seconds. First, how did he divine how much weight is inside the enclosed trailer? Second, how did he calculate that there is only 5 tons of material on the Tesla's trailer? Those look like standard 10ft Jersey barricades to me and there appears to be 11 or 12 of them on the trailer. A Google search turned up the bit of information "The most common concrete jersey barricade size used is: 10 ft Long x 24 in Wide x 32 in High and weigh approximately 4,000 lbs." That is two tons each. 11 dividers X 2 tons/divider = 22 tons.
Once I realized that narrator was blowing smoke I just shut it down.
Well that's too bad. If you would have continued on to about the 9 minute mark you would have found out that a conventual diesel semi can haul twice the amount of barriers that the Tesla did. Over twice in fact.
And if you would have went to the 25 minute mark you would have learned about the nuclear glass in this semi. Now that's somethin a truck driver worries about. I remember when I drove a truck for a few years long ago it was one of my major concerns.
BTW why the mystery about gross and net weight? Why not show the weight ticket? Seems to me it would be a great selling point......unless the figures are out to lunch. Then I would want to keep it more secret than KFC's 11 herbs and spices!
Speaking of numbers. You might want to watch this video. Lots of numbers in this video. He breaks it down pretty good and comes up with about the same numbers and facts I did years ago.

RE: Tesla delivers there first semi

While it is capable of going up the Grapevine at 60, is there video of that? It would have been speeding as the towing limit in CA is 55. I’d really like to see the consumption doing it as if I understand correctly all 3 motors would be working in that situation. I’m sure it’s well under a mile per KWh then.
Said it before, Pepsi is beta test. I’m sure it will do great for them as the use pattern is set for success.
There is a time compressed video on you tube. You can kinda see the display and topography so I guess that’s a yes. I won’t bother to look at it but if you have the time you might be able to see all the details.
Here is the video that explains everything about the Tesla Semi. It even talks about the thermal nuclear glass that is in this truck and many, many other details about this Semi.
Pretty cool!!! I never heard about the thermal nuclear glass? I learn something every day!

RE: Tesla delivers there first semi

Let's see this vehicle in operation in Ohio, Indiana, or anyplace that is currently near freezing.
Really good question. Here is one answer to your question and it's not good. And this is in what I call moderate cold. 30 degrees F is not really cold even in Kalifornia. Many parts of the US get into negative numbers. Now that's cold!

Reisender researched this before he posted it, so seems legit to me. No reason to question the validity.
His answer was no. But thanks for the link to the 3rd party independent verification. Thank you

RE: Tesla delivers there first semi

The route was between Freemont and San Diego via the grapevine as per the published data. It used 94 percent of the battery to go 500 miles.
Truck was loaded to just under 82000 pounds as per presentation.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52542070541_2f7f7c6cd8_c.jpg
Was this independently checked by a 3rd party? How big was the battery? Was the battery size independently checked by a 3rd party?
Were any of the weights independently checked by a 3rd party? There are several commercial truck scales that are mandatory to go over on this route. Do you know if they showed the actual weight ticket with the time and date printed on the ticket? If not, why not?
Was ANYTHING checked by a 3rd independent party? If not, non of this means anything.
****, you really think the data is fake... You can google it yourself and see if you can catch them in a lie. Chances are there has been more than 1 3rd party verification, like the companies that are buying these trucks from Tesla. I myself did not go look to see if the data is real, but obviously Reisender researched this before he posted it, so seems legit to me. No reason to question the validity.
I didn’t really verify anything. It’s just a screen shot from the engineers presentation. The numbers are all from the engineers presentation as well. I have no reason to believe they would falsify them. This data screen is pretty much what is in every Tesla. We have the same display in our car.
I am not an expert. But I have pulled a trailer a lot of miles with an EV. Looks legit to me.
JMHO though.
So the answer is no. Thank you.

RE: Tesla delivers there first semi

Here's video put out by Tesla for a fully loaded 500 mile run. I do find it interesting there's no passenger seat.
Link
I find it interesting what is "fully loaded." Is it fully loaded with Mike's my pillow pillows? Is it fully loaded to gross max weight? Is it fully loaded to volume? Is 10,000 lbs net fully loaded?
Words matter...
I find it interesting the route was never mentioned. I get pretty good fuel mileage when I measure my mileage at the top of the Ike grade going down hill. Now going up the Ike...
Words matter...

RE: Truck wants $$$

I would see what codes come up and go from there.
If I had to guess I would say something going wrong with your body control module. If your windshield leaks on the drivers side even a small amount this can cause problems with the BCM.
They are around 100 bucks or so for your BCM.
A shop with a good scan tool that can command different modules to do this should be able to fix you up.
Let us know what you find out.
Oh, the lights going out are more than likely just that. The lights are burned out. I have quite a few that went out on my 06. The steering wheel switches are a PITA to replace. It can be done but I hate doing the job. There are Youtube vids on doing it.
