Well for sure the Hensley would GUARANTEE a safe pleasant towing experience.
Any weight distribution hitch worth buying these days has sway control integrated into the design. It would not make sense to buy a simple basic hitch to save a couple hundred bucks.
The reality is that by and large, "tag axle" towing is not that big of a deal. Sounds like this rig will be well within its limits, and probably would not even need weight distribution save for the receiver rating of 500lbs.
Couple hundred bucks? What you talkin aboot Willis?
Simple WDH with sway control = $500 new or dime a dozen used for half that much.
A pro pride is like 4 grand…..
You must’ve meant save “a couple thousand bucks” is not a big deal?
Four grand?? At that point just put that amount toward an HD truck and skip the half ton altogether.

RE: What Truck Dealerships do you recommend.
Dennis Dillon had the best pricing on Rams when I bought my truck back in 2015 but that was quite a while ago. Dave Smith had some of the higher pricing I found.

I don't chime in on diesel vs gas. I personally don't see a need for ME to pony up another $10k for a diesel. My '22 F-250 Supercrew is quite nice with the 7.3. For those comparing peak torque 6.6 v 7.3 you may want to see when that torque curve comes in. About 1000 rpm for the Ford and about 4k rpm for the 6.6 to reach the same number. The 7.3 is a great combo with the 10 spd and has gotten about 20 mpg on decent highway, about 15 average. Around town and idling in 4 wd about 12-13, and 10-11 towing my 8000lb trailer. I'm very happy with it so far.
I suspect the 11.3 average MPG figure on Fuelly for the 7.3 in a Super Duty is a more realistic expectation most folks should have. The 10 speed certainly helps which is why it doesn't average single digits. I think my 2015 Cummins overall MPG average over 100k miles is about 15. A big gasser won't do as well as it regardless of the transmission.

This is the key right here. If you don't need a third row, the pickup is a better value and you can get an HD model vs the currently available full size SUVs which are based (somewhat) on half ton platforms. Throw a pappy cap on the back if you need the cargo area out of the weather.
But if you need more than 5-6 seats there's no way to make that work in a pickup.
Strictly from a towing standpoint you'll be far better off with the HD pickup, even versus and older 3/4 ton SUV.

Maybe in theory. I wouldn't personally do it and I'm far from the weight police. Even if the weights check out that's a big sail behind a marginal tow vehicle with a relatively short wheelbase. Plus with 6 people you'll have quite a bit in the vehicle too. If your kids are anything like mine, anyway. That's just my gut reaction without knowing any real specifics.

The BFG's are a great tire but they don't wear for $hit, at least in heavier applications. That was the first tire I put on after getting rid of the stock Firestones on my Ram. I think the Falken Wildpeaks perform at least was well on slick surfaces as the KO2 but they also wear a lot better. I'd give the Falken's a serious look. When my current ones wear out I'll buy another set.

Where's the 8000lb payload number coming from?
20% of the 40,000lb trailer? You all realize that 20% is not a required minimum for a gooseneck, right? Balance the load over the trailer axles, 40K no problem.
You have to have some pin weight or your load will be all over the road. 15% gooseneck is a reasonable number.
Nah, you can go lighter than that and be fine. People on this site don't tow much other than campers so they don't know how cargo trailers are loaded. A gooseneck loaded at 10% on the pin, which is typical for a TT camper, will be a lot more stable than the aforementioned TT given the hitch location over the axle.

I leave my 15 mirrors UP (ANTLERS) because the spot mirrors work best in that position. My 01 I have towing mirrors and the spots work the same up or down so I run down unless towing.
Personally I really like my 15 mirrors.

Don’t know why Ford owners make a big deal of mirrors, when their diesel still uses the Bosch 4.2 Pump.
Because Fords have better tow mirrors and they use them all the time. By contrast, yes the CP4 is a steaming pile but statistically the majority of them don't fail on any given owner.

To reiterate the question in more simple terms, how handily will a 3.92 geared Hemi blow the doors off a 3.21 geared Hemi?

I'd be looking pretty hard at a Tundra if I were buying a half ton. If it's a last gen truck they were pretty dated and fuel hogs but bombproof from everything I've ever heard.

Lets see, GM went to the Desmo pump as the CP-4 pain was to much for them. RAM reversed back from the two years of CP-4 failures. Saw a new 5500 with 9,500 miles with failed CP-4. Guess who still uses the CP-4?

We now know the CP4.2 pump doesn't tolerate air in the fuel especially after a fuel filter change and guess who didn't use a lift pump?
Cummins used a asymetrical CP4.2 pump and they were failing like crazy and tried to switch to a symetrical pump but it was too late. Guess who doesn't use a asymetrical pump?
You can package a turd anyway you want and you've ultimately still got a turd. I wouldn't buy a vehicle with a CP4 in it.

9.7 does seem a little low to me for that setup even going 70. Not crazy low but I'd have guessed more like 11 at those speeds. It could have been a windy day, though.
The interesting thing I've learned watching some of these videos recently is how efficient these EVs are in terms of energy use. Assuming this video is accurate, the Cummins carries 5 times the energy but can only tow roughly twice as far. I suppose even less impressive is that the Hummer needs a 3000 lb battery to carry a fifth the energy vs 31 gallons of diesel.

RE: How many folks want an EV
EV hate is silly. They suck for towing and they suck for long distance road trips, and both of those are things my family does reasonably regularly. But for a secondary around town vehicle I think an EV would be great for us. As a bonus, where I live we have cheap electricity that's among the most renewable of any state.
My wife has taken her Pilot on maybe 1 or 2 300+ mile trips in the last 5 years. It would be no problem at all for her to take another vehicle and leave me with the around town EV on those few occasions. On the more frequent occasions that the whole family goes for a long trip (or towing) we'd just take the diesel truck.
The fact that EVs are poor towing and long trip vehicles doesn't make them useless.

I have a maintainer on my dad's old Powerstroke that's parked outside at my place. I also start/drive it periodically but short of that, I'd at least keep the maintainer on it.
Similar concept, I also keep the camper plugged in to keep the batteries maintained over the winter.

Some factory hitches give you a rating with and without a WDH. My Ram just has a single max weight which I assume means don't exceed whether I'm using a WDH or not. Your Tacoma is probably the same. If you're really at 380 lbs empty I doubt you'll get it up to 650 lbs loaded assuming your hitch runs around 10%.

Actually it makes good sense. If you add a 2000 lb trailer to a 8000 lb tow vehicle that is 25% more for the vehicle to stop. Are you willing to follow 25% farther from traffic to ensure you can stop in time?
Mathematically looks great, but I'm not sure it works exactly that way in real life.
My vote is for adding surge brakes. Simple & effective. I towed car trailers for decades using them and never had a problem.
I'm not sure surge brakes would be any easier than installing electric brakes and running the wires up to a 7 pin. But it's certainly another viable option.

U could run a Cummins on some goose grease and French fry oil and the only downside is getting hungry when you’re pulling grades and it smells like a fried turkey!

Love a Ford truck with Cummins...but in a Dodge with their trans...is just a different pile of problems
I would agree the 68RFE is the worst HD trans option currently but the expense exposure is a lot smaller if it goes tits up vs the engine. I had some trouble with mine last summer that ran about $2500 to fix.

Same. In comparable trim levels HD trucks cost a little more to buy and operate but they're still a better value.
