To date, wearing a mask when needing to be in the public is the most effective method of protecting self, and others, and help spread the virus.

I'm worried about the long-haulers that are showing up. These are people who had mild to moderate forms of Covid-19 who are continuing to battle symptoms months later. This long-haul syndrome seems to mostly affect young, healthy, and (previously) physically active people - which looks to me like a big problem for our future.

Here is a fascinating read talking about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and how that can show up after certain infectious diseases and how it mirrors the problems of Covid-19 long-haulers. Link

Japan is a series of Islands. They wore masks. They have had much better results than North America. So, to protect others, I wear a mask.

I worked in Japan for several years during the 90's and mask wearing in public was quite common.

A new study suggests additional benefits of mask wearing to the wearer.

"we discuss for one of the first times the hypothesis – compiling virologic, epidemiologic and ecologic evidence- that universal masking reduces the “inoculum” or dose of the virus for the mask-wearer, leading to more mild and asymptomatic infection manifestations."

The virus is just as deadly when transmitted by a 6-year old as it is from an adult. Children will forget the basest points of safety protocol, masks, distancing, not shouting in another's face.
But we are directed and governed by the "prove it" generation. So proof will be provided if children return to school. symtoms tend to be less pronounced in children. Parents are tired of the "Endless Summer Vacation"

So, it looks like the Darwin Option, is going to take place. We shall see. Looks like .México is favoring the AstraZenica Oxford vaccine. Me two youngest granddaughters are homebound in Mexico. Their godmother retired as a public schoolteacher and in certified to endorse completion of grades 3 - 8. How fortunate grandpa is.

It is sad to see the stupidity of some of our fellow Canadians. I guess they don't need to worry about the virus affecting their brain seeing as they are already brain dead.

The people invoking the "pro choice" mantra ignore the fact that they are making a choice for MY BODY as well.

As has been said before, you don't get to drive 70 mph down a residential street as free choice because it endanger others.

The only way to convince those who are willingly ignoring scientific evidence is for them to be personally impacted by what they are claiming is not a big deal. There have been and will continue to be examples of anti vaxxers who have been impacted by what the vaccine would have prevented (Anti-Vaxxer Mom Changes Mind After Her Three Kids Fall Ill). There have been and will continue to be those who say covid-19 is no different than seasonal flu who will end up hospitalized with covid-19 (like Arkansas senator Jason Rapert). But what happened to these people will be written off as rare cases by the “true believers” of the anti movements.

So frequently we have focused on the deaths per capita as an assessment of the relative severity of covid-19 vs seasonal flu. Another assessment can be the hospitalization rates for both diseases.

2019-2020 seasonal flu cumulative hospitalization rates:
Rates per 100,000
0-4 yr 94.2
5-17 yr 24.3
18-49 yr 34.6
50-64 yr 90.5
65+ yr 174.1

CDC Laboratory Confirmed influenza hospitalizations

Covid-19 (through July 18, 2020)
Cumulative Rate per 100,000 Population Age Group
0-4 years 11.2 (12.3 July 25)
5-17 years 5.8 (6.4 July 25)
18-49 years 78.6 (85.5 July 25)
50-64 years 182.3 (196.3 July 25)
65+ years 338.2 (360.2 July 25)

CDC Covid View

Unlike seasonal flu where a plateau in hospitalization was reached at the end of the season, the hospitalization rates continue to increase for covid-19 because it is not behaving “seasonally”.
