How could there be "facts" on an essentially new disease. The nearest thing in history is the 1918 pandemic. I don't think that helps much except that when something did work then, it should be valid today. I.E. masks help protect other folks from YOU. So wear one.

The CDC recommended strategies for reducing the transmission of Covid-19 work when there is high compliance with these strategies.

Outbreak of COVID-19 and Interventions in One of the Largest Jails in the United States - Cook County IL 2020
medRxiv preprint

Quote:

Results: During March 1–April 30, 907 symptomatic and asymptomatic cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection
were detected among detained persons (n = 628) and staff (n = 279), with nine deaths. Symptomatic cases occurred in all housing divisions; in 9/13 buildings, staff cases occurred first. Among asymptomatic detained persons in quarantine, 23.6% tested positive. Visitation stopped March 15, programmatic activities were suspended March 23, cells were converted into single occupancy beginning March 26, and universal masking was implemented for staff (April 2) and detained persons (April 13). Cases at the jail declined while cases in Chicago increased.

South Korea has about 1/6 the population of the US yet has 1/290 the number of cases of the US and 1/499 the number of deaths of the US. Not seeing much American Exceptionalism here.

The cdc website list the positive tests by age group. More importantly, it lists the positive rate by age group. For the past 2 months the 5-17 year old age group has been the highest represented age group in the positive tests, the 50-64 and 65+ age groups have been the lowest age groups in the positive test results.

Sitting here watching a Super League rugby match from Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand with 34,000 people in the stands. This happened today.

New Zealand is an island so it's a little easier to eradicate an infectious disease and maintain that status. But they took active measures testing, isolating infected individuals and pretty quickly dealt with this disease. It can be done.

New Zealand Immigrantion

Quote:

Travel to New Zealand

New Zealand’s border is closed to most travellers and entry is strictly controlled. All arrivals are tested for COVID-19 and a 14-day managed quarantine or isolation is mandatory.

Their daily new case curve is not only flat but has been near zero for over 2 months

Japan is a series of Islands. They wore masks. They have had much better results than North America. So, to protect others, I wear a mask.
