Quote: ![]() The newly announced Tesla Model X Plaid is the most powerful production SUV in the world, besting even some million dollar hypercars. The upgraded battery architecture delivers instant torque, quick acceleration and high power at any speed. The Long Range and Plaid platforms connect powertrains and battery technologies for improved performance, range and efficiency. New Module and the battery architecture improves the power, endurance and enables fast charging in all conditions. The Model X Plaid features a Tri Motor All-Wheel Drive platform with 3 torque transmitting independent motors with carbon fiber-sleeve for each rotor that support peak power outputs completely to top speed. The output of the Model X Plaid is 1,020hp, 340miles range and the acceleration from 0-60mph is achieved in 2.5 seconds. The vehicle delivers maximum utility with the most storage space and towing capacity of any electric SUV. The front doors and Falcon wing doors open and close automatically. The maximum towing capacity is 5000 lbs and seating allows up to 7 adults. Hey Van, what does any of this have to do with the Semi? Should I paste in pictures of the Warren, OH battery plant? Maybe pictures of the Cadillac Lyriq? Maybe a F150 Lightning that was spotted in a public parking lot? Maybe the Hummer EV Pickup and SUV? Maybe we should paste pictures of the Kia EV6, Hyundai IONIQ 5? None of them have anything to do with a semi either!

![]() Quote: ![]() The Tesla Semi is about to begin rolling out, despite being widely viewed as a late product. However Tesla is the only electric vehicle maker that will have battery capacity thanks to the ramp up of their 4680 battery cell, which will actually allow them to produce the Semi. Competitors have low range truck offerings that they can't even produce. Tesla hasn't discussed its payload capacity much, but naysayers believe that the Tesla Semi is impossible to build since it won't have the payload necessary to be useful. This is incorrect, and Tesla will indeed have a payback period of 2 years or less especially since diesel prices continue to rise, making the Tesla Semi even more competitive. video |

Quote: ![]() Sodium-ion batteries could become a viable solution for the auto industry as its transitions to electrification. CATL's first generation sodium-ion batteries have high-energy density, fast-charging capability, excellent thermal stability, as well as excellent low-temperature performance, according to the company. The new sodium-ion battery chemistry could lead to widespread adoption of EVs by reducing costs significantly, making electric vehicles more affordable. In addition, sodium-ion batteries contain no lithium, cobalt or nickel, which are the primary metals used in nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA), nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. But perhaps the biggest advantage of sodium-ion batteries is the natural abundance of inexpensive sodium as a raw material. It can be extracted in mass quantities from seawater at low cost. The availability of inexpensive sodium could make commercial production of sodium-ion batteries much less than lithium-ion batteries today, which currently cost around $126 per kWh to produce, according to the latest data from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), which tracks the battery industry. CATL did not provide the costs per kWh to produce its new sodium-ion batteries. CATL says its sodium-ion battery offers an energy density of 160Wh/kg, currently the highest energy density in the world for this type of battery. At room temperature, the battery can be charged to 80% of its capacity within 15 minutes. Although an energy density of 160Wh/kg for CATL's sodium-ion battery is less than a lithium-ion battery's average energy density of 250-270 Wh/kg, CATL expects the energy density of its next-generation sodium-ion battery to exceed 200Wh/kg in the future as improvements are made. Cold weather performance is even more impressive. CATL claims that in extreme temperatures of -20°C, the sodium-ion battery's capacity retention rate is more than 90%. A typical lithium ion battery would typically lose around 40% of available capacity at this temperature, representing a retention rate of just 60%. philh wrote: ![]() payload capacity of model X? I don’t know about the plaid but our buddies X is about 1480 pounds of payload. I think the plaid is a couple hundred pounds heavier so I’ll take an educated guess at around 1280 pounds payload. That’s about four hundred pounds more than our model Y. Our towing capacity on our Y is 3500 pounds. It’s tight with our trailer weighing in about 3380 pounds loaded with everything including our junk, water. propane and some firewood. Hitch weight around 340 pounds. We have towed a lot over the last 35 years but it’s weird towing with an EV SUV. Hard to describe. We have just under 450 horsepower and similar torque. (We paid the extra bucks for the boost package because it’s our tow vehicle). No transmission so there is no shifting sensation. It’s like the trailer isn’t even there in terms of acceleration or hills. The brake pedal seldom gets used even on the steepest hills as the regen looks after all that. Teardrops are pretty streamlined and usually not that tall so although there is obviously an energy penalty it’s not as bad as a box type trailer. Our first longer trip will be May although all plans are still up in the air. Anyway, we would have preferred a model X but at pretty much twice the money it wasn’t worth it for us. It’s a nice combo for our needs. Looking forward to travelling this spring and summer. |
