For the past several years I have been using the old round dish and old receiver. The receiver just went out. I was wondering what my options are now as far as dish and receiver. Thank you.

Since I always set up my own sat antenna dish as well I would purchase the same satellite antenna that was mounted on our home, usually no more than $50 online. With Directv I take the HD receiver from our bedroom since Directv doesn't like to sell their equipment. With Dish network we purchased the VIP receivers for under $70 which were intended for RV use. When we went from the 18" round Directv SD antenna dish to the larger HD sat antenna many moons ago I thought it would be much more difficult to point, truth be known it takes no longer than the standard set-up. Unless there is some significant foliage or other obstruction to the southern skies, we are up in running in 10 minutes, most of that is setting up tripod. |

Thank you. Rob, you didn't mention what service you are using but if it is DirecTV I can help you. If you PM me your email address I will send you an email with links to all of the parts and pieces that I used to put together my simple system that works like a charm. These items cost well less than $200 and I take my receiver from home. Once the 3 mechanical pieces are assembled at the camp site it only takes 10 minutes or less to find the signal and peak it up. If interested and you buy the parts I'll be glad to share the details of setup. Ken ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thank you. The DTV responses are pretty good. Not sure why the Dish post is there but let's move on. Here are the basics. You can continue to use your existing antenna with a couple of modifications with the new generation of receivers but you will continue to receive programming in SD just as you have been in the past. You can buy one of the dome style antennas and connect to a new(er) receiver and get all the same programming in the same SD format. You can upgrade the antenna to receive HD programming IF YOU HAVE HD TV's in the coach. To do this you either will need a tripod based home antenna as pictured previously or a Winegard Trav'ler or RF Mogal roof mounted fully automatic antenna ($$$$). The tripod antenna is as easy to point than your current 18" antenna it's just larger so more storage space is required. If you are using a roof mounted 18" antenna there is no upgrade path for this unit. Let us know more about what you are thinking. What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK. Can't we all just get along? |

I have had Dish Network the last 2 years, bringing the receiver from home and a new dish/tripod purchased separately. I have finally been able to fairly efficiently get the dish pointed. I just call up dish, give them the new address of the campground I am at and they give me the 3 angles needed - elev, azimuth, and skew. I am planning on switching to DirecTV and after talking to them, they won't provide the 3 angles needed and what satellites they using on their latest version of their dish. They recommend calling and making an appointment to have an installer set it up for me everytime I move to a new campsite. That doesn't sound very efficient. How do all you DirecTV users get your dishes pointed? I am looking for input from those that have the newer DirecTV dishes and their home receiver. 2012 Arctic Fox 27-5L, 450W solar, 2300W Inverter, (2) 6V Titans 2008 Chevy Silverado 2500HD/Duramax, CC, SB, 2WD, FASS, Amsoil Dual By-Pass, S&B, MBRP DPF Back, EFI-Live (for Turbo Brake), B&W Patriot |

It's easier to point a DirecTV antenna than a Dish antenna. All 3 DirecTV satellites are located right in the center of the US and they are only spread across 4 degrees of the sky (99, 101, 103) instead of 20 degrees for Dish. If you can point a Dish antenna you will be thrilled at how easy it is to setup a DirecTV dish. No call to any installer is necessary. |

There are several apps available for smart phones that use the GPS capability. The one that I use for my Galaxy GS5 (Android) is called SatFinder. It will give you elevation, azimuth, and skew for 99, 101, and 103 DirecTV. It looks like this.

I am assuming you have the latest dish they currently installing and those three satellites are still the same ones as they are using with their new dishes. What about your local channels? We usually stay in one spot for a month or more but there are times where we may only stay a week or a few days. Do you have to call in to DirecTV to get the locals changed to your current location like I do for Dish? Any complaints on the DirecTV receivers or remotes that would persuade me to stay with Dish? My goal in switching is mainly to save money. There is currently a $300 Costco cash card, locked in rate of $55 if I bundle with my AT&T service, a $25 monthly discount if I go with AT&T Unlimited Plus, and free HBO for as long as I bundle with the Unlimited Plus plan. |

Does this one allow you to use the camera to view the satellites in the sky at the same time seeing if any trees are in the way. I have a Windows phone but I can install it on my wife"s Android phone, which she hates as she can't use her phone when I am using the app. ;-) Thanks!!! |

I think what you are talking about is the Satellite AR app. It only gives you a simulated camera view, not an actual camera view. It is useful when you are setting up and trying to stay out of the trees. I have used it several times for tracking the International Space Station. I don't fool with changing my service address, if I'm out of the local footprint range I crank up the antenna on the trailer and watch the local channels. If that doesn't work I just watch what is on DirecTV. Certainly not a critical concern to me. |

You can call (internet chat is much, much better) and have them change your service address only (not the billing address) and you will get the locals. I have a billing address in TX but I am currently in Orlando, FL watching WESH via satellites (except when it rains and then I use OTA). I have been a DTV customer since 2000 so I have no complaints other than satellite TV is getting too expensive! I have to look into something like you would be getting to dramatically reduce my monthly bill. I pay about $145/month for Genie, 2nd receiver, DVR service, whole house service and DNS. I am going to move from Verizon to AT&T when my current contract is up and that will save me $25/month on DTV plus new phones 2 for 1 so another $750 in savings. |

Interesting discussion To be not as technical, just wanted to comment on the dish tripod https://goo.gl/zYgsju got one recently and much easier to get the right orientation than a dish mounted on the RV roof

Not easier than an automatic antenna mounted on the RV roof!

I am still a big fan of Dish Pointer (pro$$) but with or without that app there are a number of options that will give you the right skew (offset) and the compass heading and elevation. You might think you are a complete idiot when you can't get it done right the 1st time but by the 5th time you will be done in under 15 minutes and telling your DW how amazing you are!

Too late for that! She has already seen me struggle with Dish Network one so any improvement with DirecTV will be attributed to DirecTV!!! ?? |

Remember dishpointer is free via the web (www.dishpointer.com). I use it in my browser as part of my pre-trip planning. I get the correct values for each stop in advance and have them in hand when we get there. That makes setup even quicker. I do use the dish pointer pro app ($20) on my phone if there is any doubt about something blocking the view of a satellite. |

I also carry some little 2"x 2" blocks in 1/4" in case the ground is really un-level. Unlike Bill, I have found that it is pretty important to get the mast as vertical as possible.

You might find the tripods with individually adjustable legs much easier to use.
