Topic: Monaco Roadmaster Chassis

Posted By: Dawndelion on 03/29/17 12:57pm

We are looking to upgrade to a Diesel Pusher and haven't been having a lot of luck. I've recently come across a 2001 Monaco with an RM4C roadmaster chassis. Not having any experience with air rides, would a 4 bag chassis be much more comfortable a ride than a gas MH? What are your experiences with the roadmaster chassis and it's reliability? I am also concerned about finding parts when it breaks down. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Most Roadmaster 4 bag customer were NOT happy with the 4 bag ride comfort. They wished they had the larger 8 bag Roadmaster system. You cannot upgrade a 4 bag to 8 bag. The 4 bag will be better than a standard Gas Class A ride. Doug

We have an 06 Monaco diesel pusher. I am very happy with the ride we get with the R4R chassis. In order to get the 8 bagger the size of the MH jumps to (I believe) 40 feet. It's a way smoother and quieter ride than a gasser of the same size

Yes it will ride better than a leaf spring MH but it will not handle as well as the RR8R Monaco 8 outboard air bag chassis.

This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

I owned a 2005 Holiday Rambler with the 8 bag chassis. It was 36 ft. Road great.

Look at Rvtrader and there are several hundred depending on what you are looking for.

I believe there were a lot of problems with the Roadmaster R4R chassis trailing arms so I suggest you google that chassis so you are very familiar with the necessary safety repairs before buying.

The rear trailing arm issue IS important, but IS curable. If the rest of the coach is acceptable and the trailing arm issue has not been resolved, just deduct for fixing it:

I went the same route. I owned two gas motorhomes and decided to upgrade to a diesel pusher. I bought a new 2009 Monaco Cayman. As mentioned by others, there are problems with the stock trailing arms. It is imperative that you have upgraded to the improved Roadmaster trailing arms or (preferably) the Source Engineering upgrades. I went with Source Engineering and also installed their Ride Enhancement Kit. I'm a full-timer and have over 36,000 miles on mine.

My ride is now very good... much better than my previous gasser's ride. For comparison, I drove my buddie's 2006 40 foot Allegro Bus and while the Allegro better on the bumps... not by a lot. Mine actually makes less noise when it hits a big rut! My RV no longer has any porpoising and handles bumps/ruts well. The big difference I noticed versus the Allegro Bus was how it handles in the wind. I think that may have more to do with it's steering box and chassis.

Don't get me wrong, a four bagger will never be as good as a eight bagger... but I didn't want to shell out the additional dollars for it. I'm sure that a lot of folks with eight baggers would like to have a ten bagger... or a Prevost... but don't have one for the same reason.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

A 2001 Monaco RR4R is not included in the recall that is for 2002-05.

It has the RM4C chassis, not the RR4 problems. Thanks for letting me know your experiences. We aren't interested in driving far so we're limiting our search for rigs in the Phoenix/Tucson area. I think the worst part of this rig will be the 4 speed transmission. Test drive time.

The best thing is to take it for a good long test drive and see if it fits your needs.
Don't just drive it around the block. I may be wrong but I think the older 4 bag suspensions had trailing arm problems as well. Like Wolfe 10 said they can be fixed just make sure the price reflects it if needed. Good luck in your search.

We had the trailing arms replaced with the Source Eng ones. I test drove several different units and yes, 8 and 10 bags did ride great, not enough difference for me to spend the bucks for. Ours has nearly all the options on it and suits us very well.

I would do my homework and not rush. The floor plan means a lot too.
