Topic: what is the dumbest thing about your camper?

Posted By: Rubiranch on 03/22/17 10:19am

For me its that there is no light switch or and any light at all when you first enter the camper.

The closest light is on the ceiling a few steps inside the camper.

Kind of a pain in the dark for sure.

Yes, I've ordered a touch light to put next to the door.

Too bad someone from the manufacture doesn't actually spend a night or two in one of their own RVs.

In my TT the vent in the bathroom is over the sink so in cold weather the ice cold condensation from the vent drips on your back while you're brushing your teeth. [emoticon]

Dumbest thing I've seen on a few Campers is access panels that are screwed on! Like to the HW bypass valves and winterizing valves/antifreeze syphon..

The bumper on my NL is supposed to be used to store the sewer hose. Unfortunately, none of the store bought sewer hoses that I have been able to find actually fit in it.

Without a doubt the battery boxes on my 855s. After that the location of the switches that are easy to bump on or off comes in a close second. Working on it yesterday and I hear the water heater fire up with no water in it since it has been winterized. Had it been the electric instead of the gas it might still be on because I might not have seen the red light in the daytime. So many things done well that those really standout. Overall still love the rig and will learn to deal with issues as they come up.

The AC mounting. It just sat on the flat roof with a foam gasket. No curb for waterproofing. Which explained why it leaked. Also removing it I found two of the bolts were loose. After that I would say how uncomfortable the dinette seating is. Fine to eat at but terrible to relax on.

On mine there is a drawer in the bumper one puts the hose in. Tthe hose JUST fits, but not if it's attached to a coupling or connection fitting unless I turn it just the right way, and then it still rubs... a silly 1/2" taller bumper would have cured this problem.

In a house, it's usually code that a ceiling light switch is at the door OR that switch will control a wall plug which would have a lamp plugged in. Why would you expect an RV to follow that logic? [emoticon]

Ours has an access hole for the sewer hose to go through, but the connector on an standard hose will not go through it. Solved the problem by making a special extension, and put the connector on the hose after putting the hose through the access. The access port needs to ve less than 1/4 inch bigger to fit right.

Who at Lance decided that two batteries should live under the step up to the bed?? One of the several reasons why we traded in our 855s for an Eagle Cap with the exact same floorplan. What a PITA. The EC battery box has an external door.

But that doesn't mean that our EC 850 is without its little dumb items.

-no handle inside the sliding bathroom door. Easy to add one but why didn't the factory do this? Didn't someone at the factory go into the bathroom, close the door then try to get out?

-lack of lighting over the dinette. Slide-out dinettes tend to be dark but our EC only has the usual 2 LED bulb fixture in the ceiling next to the slide-out. I added another one just like it and doubled up the lighting- much better.

My camper was design for use in cold weather, so it has heating duct going into the basement to keep holding tanks from freezing. From basement there is no designated return to the camper, but originally big holes around sewer drain and power cable compartment.
I sealed those holes and add gate valve on the duct, so when we use heat on those colder days, we don't warm up our neighbors.

I have a side entry camper but there's an awning on the back. I never use it, I only use the side awning. What's worse is the only exterior outlet is at the driver's side rear of the camper. Not near the door or even on the same side as the door. It took me a long time to even realize it was there.

I do see where sometimes the designers have to compromise and make a "dumb" decision. There's only so much room in these campers, and everybody wants everything. You just plain run out of space.

That we do understand because we have used the bathroom. Obviously the factory decided to eliminate your cutout since it isn't on ours and apparently no one at the factory noticed that it was needed.

I will put a slim handle at the very edge of the door since we both fit through the doorway when it isn't fully open.

Posted By: HMS Beagle on 03/23/17 09:56am

The dumbest thing I see in my camper and every camper is the huge amount of wasted space in the cabinetry. This is most apparent in the under-the-counter drawers. Generally there is a face frame, slides, and then a drawer box made such that 12" wide cabinet front results in 7" wide drawers. Contrast that with some European van conversion which have no face frame, full width and full extension drawers. In my Bigfoot, if you calculate the volume of the drawers and compare it to the overall volume they consume in the camper, it is less than half. This same thinking is applied to much of the storage. It seems to be true of every North American brand.

Something that rivals that for dumbness is the seating at the dinette. I have yet to sit in a camper dinette that was comfortable. Flat seats, straight up backs not high enough. Its the sort of seating they use at Gitmo on terrorists.

Posted By: Fisher Bill on 03/23/17 10:44am

The dinette is terrible to rest on and our slide has both the fridge and the dinette on one side so when the fridge is full and I have storage totes on the seats it leans hard to the slide side, loads and bags seem to help even it out.

Whenever I pass one on the road I can see they tilt to the right also.

Rain gutters that terminate right above the front pass thru storage hatches. Nothing refreshes like cold water dripping on your back when looking for that doohickey that is somewhere way back there.

After using the digital thermostat, the analog slider isn't so bad. Especially with how the digital thermostat sometimes has issues and requires resetting every so often.

Posted By: Boomtown Rat on 03/23/17 02:48pm

A good idea gone bad. A wall switch to control the entry light. Great idea! Now I don't have to paw around the ceiling to find the light switch. And the short ones can turn on the light for themselves. BUT the entry switch is hidden in panel of switches for controlling everything else in the trailer. I am more likely to turn off the water heater and turn off the porch light before the entry light is turned on.

The entry light switch has been moved to a different location. Problem solved.

Not sure if yours does but our door will stay fully open. There's a friction spot that grabs it (not that I ever travel with it that way). A handle may prevent using that if you ever do.

You could add a soft strap loop and it wouldn't have to be at the door edge. It would still fit by the wall that way.

Kind of amazing how many have similar 'dumb' attributes. Specifically the no interior light switch by rear door.

On ours, also no interior light switch by door. I understand that 3 way switches would have been needed and another 10' of wire to have interior light controlled from either location at dinette or door. Added cost so might have cut mfg slack. But stumbling around trying to locate dinette light switch in the dark, that thought never occurred to me, it was always 'this is dumb'.

But dumber was the fact that the bathroom light was by back door, behind the bathroom door, hinge side. If you went into bath without turning on light first, you had to completely exit, close the door to reach the switch. Or call out to who ever was setting at dinnet who could easily reach it. That went beyond dumb to 'this is stupid'.

How many would find it so.

Posted By: d3500ram on 03/24/17 04:49pm

I do not know about other camper brands, but mine did not have hot/ cold water shut-off valves inside that isolated the lines to the outside shower. If I were to camp in the winter and use the domestic water, there would be standing water at the shower head and the valves. Granted, I do pull the shower head inside, but the valves would still be exposed.

I ended up doing some plumbing work to add shut-off valves- this way I can winterize the whole camper then close the valves to the exterior shower (leaving RVAF in those lines) and then de-winterise to use water inside during winter camping.

Ours has a switch by the door in series with the one on the fixture. We never use the fixture switch so 3-way isn't really needed. The bath light switch is only on the fixture so no problem with needing the light after entering,

I think you already saw how I fixed my water pump switch a few years ago.

- Bathroom layout: the floor in front of the throne is much higher than standard leaving shorter people no leverage when sitting down. Worse is the placement of the sink requiring the user to leave the door open so their knees don't have to be touching. (sit slightly rotated to the right away from the sink)

- They put a locking door on the power cord and sewer compartment but left the water tank fill port accessable without a key.

My 2006 Arctic Fox 1150 is amazingly well thought out, including the light switch that you can reach through the doorway while standing on the ground. If there is anything dumb about it, I am only aware of two: The furnace is in the slide, so there can not be any ducting to the bathroom or the bedroom. Also, the drive motor for the slide is supposed to be mounted on a shaft between the 2 gears that move the slide. AF chose to mount it to the rear of the rearmost gear, and that causes timing issues between the two gears.

I'm on the bigger side, so I usually leave the door open and put my right foot on the step outside the bathroom. Unfortunately, my propane tanks are under the sink, so it kind of needs to be that way.

Posted By: 2oldnslow on 03/29/17 02:29pm

Not just on mine, I have seen this on many campers:
The fill port for the fresh water tank is right there for anyone to put whatever they like into it, and the vent is open to the wind. That probably lets lots of dust into the tank.

I added a locking door over it all.

How are you going to watch TV or read a book with an indoor sun right in your face? [emoticon]

Indoor sun glasses?

I apologize, it seemed obvious...and sounded funny at the time. I do get it, the issue that is. I put some D battery lights with adhesive, stuck to the bedside cabinets that run alongside the bed, both sides, at bed level so when laying down reading it's low and behind my head for great reading.

Now I have never seen that. Had many rv's incl 3 campers. All had the standard locking door with the fill and vent openings behind the lockable door. Can't imagine a water tank vent open on the side of a camper.

24ft travel trailer with two slides. The bedroom door won´t open with the living room slide in.

A pocket door would have been better and I believe cheaper.

Good idea. I might have to do that. My thoughts were so focused on how am I going to move these stupid things.

How about an outdoor kitchen closet with refrigerator that has no ventilation. So in the summer the very best your refrigerator can maintain is about 50 degrees F. The compressor is throwing off heat to try to cool its contents and that heat has NOWHERE to go.

Then at night, when things cool off, that same refrigerator freezes all your food.

Anybody up for a frozen hard boiled egg? Anyone?

Stupid.

Or...

How about a GFCI circuit switch that runs all the outlets in the bathroom, and outdoor areas, but the GFCI is in the BUNKHOUSE.

I forget how many times I tripped that thing but couldn't remember where to reset it because it is in the BUNKHOUSE.

Also,

Has anyone yet figured out why the outdoor switch on a Suburban water heater has to be hidden behind the gas plumbing? Do they not WANT you to find it?

Why is the ON position really the OFF position and why is the OFF position really the ON position?

Seems like someone is laughing at all of us from afar.....

Or,

Why is it that the coldest room in the TT has to be the bathroom? Some nights its 40 degrees in there and my tail end is froze to the seat.

Gosh I'm feeling pretty good about my Outfitter. If I had to buy another camper I'd buy exactly the same one. Issues? From time to time like every one but every inch of usable space has been made, well, usable. I've enjoyed reading these posts, what an eye opener!

I'm feeling the same about my Northstar. I've been trying to think of something to add to this thread and the only thing I can think of I've already fixed. Mine came with a Kyocera 135W solar panel, but my camper is only 7' wide. Where the panel is mounted left no room to install AC, but it was pretty much the only place to mount a panel that size. I've since replaced that panel with a 100W Renogy that is narrow enough to add AC, I also added 3 other 100W panels at the same time.

I'd like to complain abut the size of the bathroom but it's not Northstar's fault my father cursed me by wishing one of his boys grew to at least 6'. [emoticon]

The only other issue I can think of is the truck bed access doors open right where the wheel wells are which restricts the size of objects I can put in front of the wheel wells. But that's what happens with a camper build for long or short beds in a short bed.

x2. Very much an eye opener.

I don't have much to complain about with our Northstar either. Maybe just these few minor things:

1. I wish the fresh water tank drain valve was located such that I could drain the water somewhere else than into the truck bed. Don't want all that water sitting there between camper bottom, bed mat and truck bed. I wanted to attach some kind of additional hose to get the water elsewhere, tap into the drain hose inside and run a temporary hose through the wheel well doors and up over the bed rails...and syphon..??

2. Wide utensil drawer could have more substantial sliding hardware, has one flimsy central guide.

3. Wish the gray water drain and valve didn't stick out the back wall, would have preferred it be hidden underneath the overhang. Space constraints, no doubt.

I hesar ya' about the fresh water drain. I added a valve inside and poked through the side of the camper and also drilled a hole in the truck bed and dropped the hose in front of the left rear tire:

The only other comment that I alluded to earlier in this thread was the lack of shut-off valves for the out door shower. Added those as well for my plumbing upgrades:

These were 2 really easy upgrades that I wish NorthStar would include as standard equipment... especially if one plans to winter camp.

The escape hatch on the roof of my Northstar. The shade gets to 120 degrees in the summer. I've painted it over black then white and block it. Hate it.

We just bought a 2017 Outback Super-Lite. Love it.....but...there is not a heat duct IN the bathroom. Really?? But there is an air conditioning vent in there. (I'm cold natured [emoticon] )

On the 2011 Wildwood we just traded, the hot water heater could only be turned on from the outside. Hated that.

The entry door swings the wrong way, When open it blocks half the dinette window.
I to would like more battery box room on the tongue, I can fit two GC2 batteries but its tight and a back twister to get them in and out.
Other than that I like the rest of it!

The ladder is on the wrong side of the door. It intrudes into the view from window at the rear of the dinette and the skylight over the dinette is right in front of you when you get to the top.

The step handle folds over against the back door. The mean little neighbor boy closed it at night. Can not open the door from the inside. A little hard for this old guy to climb out the skylight, onto the truck hood and onto the ground. Fortunately somebody heard my cries for help. Fortunately those next door people had left.

The manual rear awning. It's very difficult to deploy and stow.
Operating it requires shimmying across the rear bumper to get to the driver side arm latches.

This is my 8th year with the camper and I've probably only used the awning 6 times.

I carry a folding step stool which gives me enough height to reach the latches even on my flat bed. I guess long monkey arms help too...

I set up the stairs before I pull down the awning. At the top of the stairs, I can reach the awning pull strap and walk down the steps to pull out the awning (same when putting it away). If you were out west, you would most likely use it more to keep your entry dry.

My Arctic Fox has very little to complain about. It had three annoying but easily fixable problems that popped up right after purchase.

1. They wired the gen switch and hour meter wrong, I had to reverse a few wires to get it going and the hour meter to run. When I called the dealer service department, creepy salesmen kept answering the phone and telling me the service department "had a special way to fix that problem".

2. The easy open extender for the door handle had a small plastic part installed backwards. As soon as you pulled the thing it broke. The creepy salesman had said it was designed that way.

3. The only light in the thing that are not LEDs are the night lights by the bed, they suck battery and are insanely bright.

The first two were easily fixed by calling Arctic Fox and avoiding creepy salesmen. AF sent parts out ASAP. I spoke with a manager in the assembly area, sent him photos of the two problems and a picture of the part that was reversed. They were very nice to deal with and I'm betting they corrected both problems at the source.

A swap for the lights is this springs project.

It seems like the designers are stuck in a house mindset when designing TCs. They need to focus on how to best utilize the space available. It's not a house, stop trying to make it look and feel like one. It would be nice if some retired NASA engineers started designing campers.

My camper you had to go up and into the dark camper to feel around for light switches.

On of my first mods was to add a battery operated, LED, motion sensitive, wall sconce.

It comes on the moment the door is opened and gives enough light to see around the camper and turn on the desired lights.
