Topic: Question on Michelin LTX tires

Posted By: riven1950 on 12/09/16 01:20pm

I have set of Michelin LTX M/S LT tires ordered for my 2013 f150 cc.

I have been reviewing some previous post and I keep seeing some folks mentioning a 70,000 mile or 60,000 mile warranty on these tires.

From what I can find the LTX M/S LT tires have a 50,000 warranty. This is the tire with 3415 lb capacity and 80 psi. The Michelin site says 70,000 miles warranty @ speed rating T and H, 50,000 miles @ speed rating R. Best I can tell R rating is for LT use. What am I missing or am I just over thinking this. Is this the same tire just rated differently depending on use? No tire expert here.

I don't want or need an all terrain tire so it looks like the Defender LTX M/S LT is what I want, at least I think so.

I run these (LTX), I had to replace them two years ago, not due to wear but because they had cracks in the tread valleys. They had been on for several years I want to think over a decade, ~ 60,000 miles. Only about half way through the tread, not sure of the depth but far from the wear bars.

Depends on size. Go to Michelin site, and scroll down near bottom.

I have been using them for the past 20 years on 4 different vehicles.
You get what you pay for.
I have easily gotten 70,000 and up to 80,000 out of them.

The ride is far superior to other tires I have tried. We replaced the Firestones on the Suburban with these and the right was very much improved, much quieter and a lot smoother. I was going to go with Goodyear or a less expensive tire as now our tires age out rather than wear out, however the Michelins were only about 25.00 more each so it was a no-brainer to go with a far superior tire.

I am replacing the 285-75-16's on the F250 after the first of the year with the LTX/AT LT and have an out the door price of 875.00 from a mom/pop tire shop a short drive away from here. I am currently running LTX/MS but am changing now since moving here I use a lot of boat ramps that are on dirt roads and need the traction.

I will probably now have the same experience as eichacsj above and these will age out and crack as we now drive around 5000 miles per year and will not wear them out. I drive company car for work and our vehicles are only for personal pleasure use.

I have a set of E rated tires on my 2010 Chevrolet 2500HD. They currently have 35,000 miles on them. I will be lucky to get 40,000 miles out of them. Very expensive tire with 70,000 mile warranty. If you actually read the reviews and talk to tire tire people the sidewalls and rubber are very soft. Mine came with 15/32 tread when new, rotated regularly, at 30,000 miles they were down to 5/32. I run 80 psi in the rear and 65 psi in the front when towing; and around 50 psi front and back when not towing. Michelin's are great on my cars, but I am very disappointed in this set on my truck. Next time my top three choices will be Toyo, Yokohama and Cooper.

I suspect you have the LTX M/S "2's" not the old LTX M/S's which were the subject of a huge recall. I have run the LTX M/S 2's on both my F-150 and on my 24' Class C with excellent results (especially the free set of 6 for my Class C thanks to the original M/S's being recalled).

Both sets were E rated and came with a 70,000 mile tread warranty.

Rating and warranty issues aside, the Michelin Defenders can have some drawbacks. I have them on my mini-van, and my tire shop had a terrible time getting one of them balanced. The owner there told me that they had a lot of balancing problems with the Defenders.

The tread has a long wear because it is HARD. The ride is not nearly as smooth as other Michelin tires, even in a heavier vehicle like a mini-van. It might be better on a truck, but I'm betting it still won't be as good as another Michelin tire. I had the Harmony line on my van before the Defenders, and the ride was MUCH better.

I recommend doing some reading and research before switching to them. TireRack.com is a good source of reviews and information on tires. If I had it to do over again, I would not buy the Defenders for my vehicle.

I have run the LTX/MS-2 E-rated For Summer Tires.

Just replaced them with the Defender LTX/MS E-rated that replaces the MS-2. For next Summer.

For Winter I use LTX/AT-2 E-rated

Great tires as far as I'M concerned.

fyi: I contacted Michenlin about the warranty. They said the 10 ply LT tires in my size ( 275/65R18 ) have a 50,000 mile warranty. They said the 10 ply tires have a " different mileage expectancy " than the 4 ply tires. The 4 plys are not E rated and they recommended the 10ply for towing due to stiffness.

I still plan to get the LT tires this week. Just curious about the mileage warranty. Reviews are overall great everywhere I look.

Previously coming from Toyos, I went with Michelin LTX tires. I am pretty confident they will not last over 50,000 miles perhaps as little as 40,000 miles. Disappointed in the tire life. Doubt I would purchase them again as they are way too expensive for what you get. They are also not that impressive in snow.

Great tires.
I put 6 of them (not the 2's, but the originals) after I wore out the rubber my dually came from the factory with.
I logged over 127,000 K on them which was about 800 shy of 80,000 miles before I replaced them with the same tire but the version 2.
Never a problem ever with them aside from a couple repairs where I picked up a screw on the road somewhere.
I exceeded the mileage warranty by a lot.

LTX is a P and LT tire line from Michelin so its important to know which LTX is being cussed or discussed.
LTX A/S
LTX M/S
LTX AT 2
LTX M/S 2
LTX winter
LTX energy saver
and of course older LTX lines still on our trucks that were discontinued.

My previous '01 and current '03 Dodge/Cummins came with the LTX A/S. The '01 had the older tread design at 84k miles when I sold it.
My current '03 had the newer style LTX A/S tread design and ran them till around 114k miles.
The A/S were very poor in ice/snow/mud so I went with Cooper AT and Bridgestone revo 2 all terrain type of tread.

I had 6 16" Michelin LTX/MS tires put on my 2007 Chevy 3500 dually diesel on 8/14/2012 with 39,227 miles on the truck. The tires have a 70,000 mile guarantee on them. As 12/9/2016, the truck has 63,264 miles on it and the tires only have 4/32's of tread left on them. That is a total of 24,027 miles and the tires are worn out. The retailer I purchased them from is scheduled to replace them on 12/13 under warranty. Michelin no longer offers the LTX tire with the 70,000 mile warranty. My new tires will be the equivalent replacement with only a 50,000 mile warranty. Michelin no longer offers a 70,000 mile warranty on their tires. The cost to me was the mileage use equivalent.

There are several different kinds of Michelin LTX tires.

The Michelin LTX Defender M/S LT tires have the R speed rating and now come with a 50,000 mile tread life warranty. The LTX A/T2 LT tires with R speed rating come with a 60,000 mile warranty.

The other Michelin LTX tires that have the S and T speed ratings still come with the 70,000 mile tread life warranty.

That info is from the Michelin web site.

My Michelin Defender LTX M/S 265/60R18 110T tires (not LT tires) came with a 70,000 mile warranty.

Michelin tires work very hard at making their tires sound like they are the best on the road but they won't back them up. I had replaced my 245/75R16 load range E with Michelin. After a year the sidewall had cracks. After 21/2 years they looked terrible but Costco said Michelin won't replace. I called Michelin as a recall was on going but my tires were 2 sizes bigger than recall, even though they were manufacture at same plant and same time as recall. They told me cracking is not covered, only tread seperation or catastrophe tire failure (blow out), would they replace tire. I did not feel safe so I replaced them with USA made Cooper tires. 3 years and 40000 mile still looking good. I will never pay higher price for a Michelin tire that not even made in US.

Different experiences for different folks. My Michelin tires say "Made in U.S.A." on the sidewall. They have many manufacturing plants in the US employing over 17,000 people. I replaced the OEM Michelins that came of my F150 after three years at 74,000 miles at 4/32". Bought some more Michelins.

At least that one doesn't have sidewall cracking-yet! My 4 year old LTX M/S tires look like a dry lake bed at 27000 miles and Michelin says they are okay.

"Michelin tires work very hard at making their tires sound like they are the best on the road but they won't back them up. "

That is absurd... Michelin recalled over 1.3 MILLION LT tires even though only a small number of defects were found. Keep in mind if you were the owner of the recalled tires you got a complete set of their newest replacements, mounted and balanced for free, that's right around $1,500 worth of new rubber.

Yep, I got the 6 LTX M/S's that came on my 2012 {2011 chassis}, Class C replaced with LTX M/S 2's. They all looked good after 16,000 miles but was happy to let Michelin step up and do the right thing just because their "might" be a problem down the road.

I had previously put LTX M/S 2's on my F-150 with excellent results. I've been running nothing but Michelin's on all of my vehicles for 40+ years and have NEVER had a tire problem. If you want to hate Michelin that's OK with me but try and get your facts right.

Yup...road bicycle tire and the point is that HAD Michelin tires on
my cars, trucks and bicycles...*ALL* have sidewall cracks...not just
one set, but many, many, many sets over many years...

Same bicycle, same usage (almost daily 10-20 miles, same garage EVERY
NIGHT)...over 2 years with the new Conti's vs the 1 year Michelin
bicycle tires and NO CRACKS on the replacement Conti's

Read the whole thread that picture is linked to...

PS...too many into absolutism...one gets good usage...therefore EVERYONE

I'll not buy/own another set of Michelin's until someone I value
posts their newfound experience with them...then just maybe reconsider..but
why, as am happy with my new sets on my cars, trucks, bicycles, etc and
they cost LESS than Michelin...though Bridgestone has been moving

My LTX tires last around 50K and my wife gripes all the time but it is a truck and you are about 5000 lb heavier than a car or more. Your mileage may vary but I've only ahd 2 flats in 25 years.

I had 6 ms/2s on my class c. All had cracks on the sidewalls and 5 had to be replaced at 20k due to catestrophic failures, tread separating, bizzarre tread wear that michellin agreed was likely a materials problem, etc. . Michillen refused to back up its product. Would never buy from them again.

Our son just replaced the LTX that were on his (my old) duramax with LTX. the OLD ones had a 70K mile warranty. the new ones, same rating, same size etc. etc. is 50K. He was told michelin changed the mileage warranty recently.

And since when he has run them, and I have run them, 35K is the most we ever got out of a set I can see why they have changed the warranty.

Needless to say, since discount tire honors the warranty very well, each set was not costing us much since we were getting around 50 percent credit on the new set.

I did try some toyo's at one time, same result, 30-35K miles, and similar on the OEM Goodyears, so I don't think the Michelins are any better or worse than others for mileage. But the did handle well and have good traction and quite ride.

That's a P-rated tire. I wonder if that makes a difference? Do the LT tires have a harder compound that's more prone to cracking?

I had a set of Michelin LTX M/S 2's, load range E on my 2010 2500HD Chevrolet Silverado with gas 6.0 engine. Bought them from Discount Tire, very expensive almost $1250 with lifetime rotation and balancing. These came with the 70,000 mile warranty. Well at 36,000 miles there were 3/32 on outside and center of tires. Rotated and balanced regularly with even wear on all 4 tires.

The week after Christmas I decided to replace them, I was thinking about going with Toyo, Yokohama or Cooper. Never had any of them before. Then I decided to go and talk to Discount Tire. They said they would sell me a new set of Michelin Defender LTX M/S for $556.00. I was not going to put another set of these on, but at that price I purchased them. Price included lifetime rotation and balancing. These now have a 50,000 mile warranty.

I asked the tire rep what their experience was with these tires. He said that they do not like the heavier weight of the 2500/3500 trucks. I then asked him what kind of mileage I could expect out of them and said about like the old ones that you have.

After looking at the Discount Tire prices for these new Michelin Defenders they are considerably cheaper then the old M/S 2's with 20,000 mile less warranty!

I guess Michelin learned their lesson on the 70,000 mile warranty and reduced it to 50,000.

Maybe get something else next time. By the way I have always had good experience with Michelin's on my cars.
