Topic: NEW QUESTION, was: Small lightweight TC for '06 2500 megacab |

After a week's hunting trip I'm back home and thinking of getting a small lightweight truck camper for next year's trip. I've done some searches re: megacabs and truck campers, I already know it's not the best truck in the world for a TC but it is what it is. I'm looking for suggestions for small, lightweight models that would work. Soft side or hardside, doesn't have to have a shower (toilet would be nice), obviously no slide. Figure something around 1500 pounds +/- would work, I'd be prepared to make some basic mods to the truck (air springs etc). Looked at a decent used Palomino 1225 this week at a local dealer, it's already sold, but something like that seems like it would be a good fit. Not really realistic to sell this truck and get another one. The trailer in my sig would likely go in trade. Any suggestions of models to look at and things to watch out for/be aware of? thanks in advance. soft side is the way you want to go for a hunting rig, low center of gravity and light is key. I just sold a lance 1071 slide and I hauled it on a massivly modified 1 ton and no way in the world I would go down a forest service road or hunting road. low center of gravity is more important than anything eles. 1993 Dodge W350 Cummins with all the goodies 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn 2wd 395hp 2017 Forest River Surveyor 243 RBS 2001 Super Sherpa & 2012 DL650A go along also ![]() |

This is pretty much my thinking. I bird hunt the UP of Michigan, in Wisconsin, and in Maine, and a lot of times you're squeezing through some pretty overgrown two-tracks. So low clearance is a key consideration. I would still look at a hard side if it were light enough, but I think I'll end up with a soft side. |

This is pretty much what I'm looking for, it would be nice to add a toilet, but that's not the deal breaker. How do folks like these Travel Lite campers? I know they're not Lance or Arctic Fox level build quality, but I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who's owned one. We have a dealer near us that carries them. I've also looked over the Truck Camper Warehouse website, seems like the place to go on the East Coast for truck camper inventory. |

The Northstar Pop-ups are really nice. Get the arctic insulation pkg. I love the Four Wheel Campers but they are a bit pricy. You can always add a port-potty.

What is YOUR weight limit? Remember, most soft sides really are not lighter than a hard side, but I get the clearance part. Mine is 3500-3800 lbs and it took some mods to get it comfortable for me. I think if can live with spartan, you can be in the 2000 lbs range with a basic pop up. Truck can do it fine. 2017 Ford F-350, crewcab, 4x4, 6.7 diesel. 2016 Thunderjet Luxor 21' limited edition, Yamaha powered. 2016 Wolf Creek 840-SOLD, Arctic Fox 990 ordered. |

Understand your want for a low profile camper and if you get a super lightweight one like you're looking for you won't have to do any suspension mods probably, but don't underestimate what your truck is capable of. You can put a good size camper on it.

Jim, In my opinion TC manufacturers have pretty much all "upped their game" in the last decade or so. I don't think anyone who produces junk is going to be in business very long. Is the Travel Lite good for spending 150-200 nights a years in? Probably not, but for a few weekends and maybe one or two week long vacations it would do the job. That being said in the past we owned a Northstar pop-up TC and were very happy with the build quality. One way to go further would be to talk to Bill or Ryan at Truck Camper Warehouse and ask their opinion and suggestions. John |
