Topic: Bought a Scamp!

Posted By: Tioga George on 10/13/16 12:08am

I just bought a little Scamp Travel Trailer. It's 13 feet long and weight about 1,350 pounds.

My plans are, to go out camping in the forest. I am sooooo excited about that!

My Scamp looks like this:

Good for you. As our lives change, what works for us changes. I've been thinking along the same lines, but also staying open to the folding camper idea, because I like the feel of being in a tent while past sleeping on the ground, and trying to get up from the ground.

I'm sure you'll enjoy customizing it to fit your purposes.

That is a nice little trailer, and perfect for the adventures you seek!

I have a friend that owns a 13' Winnebago TT. He enjoys getting back in the woods with it. He did flip the axle, to allow more clearance for back road adventure.

Have fun,
Jerry

Alot can said about the small footprint campers to go where you want to go...

I have really been looking at these rugged OFF-ROAD campers that I can pull with my 4WD vehicles to get me way back off-grid...

I like this one big time....

Welcome back George

Posted By: huachuca on 10/13/16 08:23am

Great choice. We're on our second Scamp; first a 16 side bath and now a 19D. Just got back to NC from a 6K mile trip out west with all of our camping being boondocking or rustic NF/NPS facilities. Hope you enjoy yours as much as we do ours.

Feels good to be back in the camping scene, doesn't it? After selling our TT several years ago, we knew we wanted to have something that allowed us to be back out in nature. We needed a unit with a bathroom, and looked at several PUPs but never found one that fit our needs. One day driving around town, I found a 19 foot Hi-Lo that was extremely well taken care of and just fit the needs for the two of us. Easy set up, just enough storage and room for a three or four day trip and pulls like a dream. Just can not describe how good it felt sitting around a campfire the first time out!!!!! Go for it George.... Happy camping.

It must be because they are so unique and functional that every time the DW and I travel we point out Scamps and Casitas we see going down the road. Great to see a unit that gets people out there without having to buy a 400HP tow vehicle.

I can recall only a few trips in over twelve years of Scamp ownership when someone didn't approach us with questions about the camper. And we love showing it off.

I picked up a fifteen foot Jayco for traveling while leaving my larger trailer for longer stays. Been the fifth wheel and small motorhome route. Really going to enjoy the next two weeks touring West Texas in the tiny trailer.

Congrats!!! nice little trailer!

Many of my fondest memories are traveling with our Burro of about the same size. Alas, at 77 it has just been too small and I want/need more comfort. Those little things are just wonderful and I hope you have many years of joyful camping.

Is this really Tioga George?? Gosh, if that is true, it is great news. Am I confusing you with someone else? If so, please forgive me. If I recall correctly, Tioga George had some pretty major health issues.

Is there any way to lift that Scamp for better clearance on rough forest roads? There is so much great boondocking out here in the West, but there are lots of big rocks, too!

I just did some checking and yes, this is the real George, by George!! Wow. That is the best news I have heard in a long time. Welcome back to RVing!!

He bought a larger trailer to live in, and is using the Scamp for boondocking a couple days at a time.
He is towing it with his Honda Fit.

Posted By: Tioga George on 11/16/16 12:55pm

Yes! I am Tioga George.

In a few days, my trailer Scampy and I will be off on our first big trip together! We'll be traveling about 150 miles to San Diego.

I've been busy tweaking Scampy to get ready for that trip! Today, I'm installing an inverter into Scampy's interior in order to have 120AC power when dry camping and boondocking.

What a blast!

Have a safe trip! Is it true, as someone said above, that you are towing with a Honda Fit? If this were anyone else, I would wag my ultra-conservative "weight police" finger -- but I am pretty certain that you, of all people, know exactly what you are doing. [emoticon]

Continued success and good health!

George, so glad to hear that you are up and around again. Does your Honda have a stick shift or the CVT? Just curious.

Your chosen tow vehicle brings to mind our 1985 vacation. My wife, 2 children and I traveled from MI to CO and back, towing a 13' UHaul (fiberglass egg trailer) with a stick shift, 2.2L Dodge Omni. I did have a hard time maintaining 50 mph on modest hills, but I think your Fit has about 1/3 more HP than that Omni. Just one thing I'd advise: check your hitch mount bolts every so often to make sure they're staying tight and not tearing any sheet metal.

Tioga George,

Congrats. I am a HUGE molded fiberglass RV fan. Laura and I just finished our first season camping as empty nesters with our new-to-us Casita 17' FD. You will love your Scamp 13'.

Take care,

Dean

That Moby would work for a desert, as with it's marketing video, but not for the midwest where we have thunderstorms.

Where in the world could you sit comfortably for hours on end, waiting the storm out??

Theres only separated sleeping mattresses on top in the tent and in the small tear drop camper. Don't like the idea of my young kids being in a separate sleeping area either. A tall ground based expedition tent would be more comfortable and much cheaper.
