Topic: Electric power jack-any suggestions?

Posted By: jabres on 08/28/16 07:55pm

Can anyone lead me to a decent, fair priced, electric power tounge jack that I can order online and have shipped? Not looking for the top of the line most expensive on, but a fair priced decent one. Tounge weight of trailer is 1,100 pounds, and its a 2014 Keystone Hideout. Existing crank jack is the type with the 3 bolts holding it in place. Also, looking for one that is user-friendly, and isn't to tough to install.
THANKS!!

Atwood or Barker....can't go wrong.
For your set up I'd go with 3000 lb or 3500 lb. model. 2 1/4 inch shaft.

I got mine here, it has done well for a year now, with a 20% off coupon the price as a little over $100.00. 1 wire, I ran a wire from the bttery box (installed a switch in battery box and also a 30A breaker, took about 20 minutes to hook up.

Just bought an Atwood 4000 that replaced my crappy Lippert Components jack that folded during a wind storm earlier this summer. The Atwood is made in the USA versus the Chinese made Lippert. We love it. It works much faster then our old one and does not strain when lifting like the Lippert. Lou

Nineoaks2004- Harbor freight products I always have thought were junk, but it seems yours is holding up

Posted By: Chuck_thehammer on 08/29/16 05:05am

Harbor Fright .. 3,500 pounds.. (only one they sell). $100.00 with coupon. read the reviews.
my trailer has a 1,200 pound tongue weight.

Fuse in battery box... I used a old style Ford starter solenoid with a rocker switch hidden under the propane tank cover. so kids don't play.

Easy 3 bolt install. 1 wire ..

my budget could not DO the Barker. AND my shoulder demanded I upgrade from the manual.

The LCI tongue jack that came with our Coachmen Freedom Express worked fine but the head was huge and interfered with the tailgate on our Avalanche. I replaced it with an UltraFab 3502 as I've owned one before and liked the fact the base plate has extra holes, allowing the tongue jack to be oriented so the head is facing exactly 90 degrees to the side rather than 120 degrees as is the case with pretty well every other tongue jack. Barkers and pretty well every other competing brand have a plastic head that will become brittle and discolour from exposure to the sun so I much prefer an all metal head. Be aware though that eBay and Amazon are both filled with cheap lookalikes that are not authentic UltraFab tongue jacks.

www.discounthitches.com sells the Curt Mfg towing products, which includes tongue jacks of all styles and sizes. I've found the Curt products to be of good quality and reasonable price. Curt products are all American made, mostly in Texas, so far as I know.

that is something... the harbor freight looks just like this one... except for the extra holes to mount.

That Harbor Freight version is a Chinese knockoff of the authentic UltraFab ... hard to say just how different the internal parts may be but I wanted guaranteed reliability so I made sure I purchased an UltraFab even though it cost more. The current version of UF 3502 not only has multiple holes in the base plate that allow a variety of mounting positions but it also has a zerk fitting on the shaft so the internal mechanism can be greased effectively without disassembling the jack ... I suspect the knockoffs don't have this feature either. As a point of interest, I chose an UltraFab this second time around because the original I owned a few years ago would allow rotating of the head 180 degress by simply removing the four head bolts. I discovered later (and confirmed by email with UltraFab) that the internal design of this jack has been changed so this is now not nearly as easy to do with the newest version ... ergo, the reason they've added additional holes to the base plate so the entire jack can easily be rotated.

If I replace mine, I'm going with the Husky 4500 with the wireless remote. Between that and my backup camera, I think hooking up would be a breeze.

I am not trying to Rate or not of a product..

its the MONEY... 100 dollar and 300 dollar..

I would love to have a Barker 3500 or 4500... not in the budget..

I will take my cheaper one.. disassemble it, clean it, grease it.. every year if needed..

an mine did come with a parts breakout sheet with part numbers... getting them is another story.
and I have a Barker 32 gallon 4 wheel tote... and they replaced both rear tires/wheels/bearing/and shipped them to a campground for me, FREE. great company.

I'll cast another vote for the Attwood. The price isn't that bad, it is very good quality and the motor is mounted on top and not on the side. This will give you more tailgate clearance.

Our last trailer I put the Atwood 4K lb Robofoot jack on. Ordered from Etrailer for about $250 I think it was. Reason I went for the 4K vs the 3K model was the 4K has better internals, ball screw drive.

I never actually used the foot, but was very happy with the jack. As mentioned, the design gives more tailgate clearance as well.

Good luck!!!

New link, hope i got it this time! It is a 3500lb jack. Seems like a good deal for someone.

I'm happy with my Husky 3000. Ball drive, lights, and includes a really handy trailer connector storage bracket. And, the foot is adjustable, so there's about 6" of extra range. The early ones apparently had an issue where gears could break if you drove it past its limits, but the current ones have limit switches.

Thanks for all the responses! So it seems a lot of people are suggesting the "Ultra-Fab" Product. Why is it though that amazon link below has such terrible ratings on the product?

It probably because they had the same experience as me, lasted only 3 years with light use. My favorite dealer quit selling them and referred to them as a "two year" jack.

58% 5 star and 4 star rating is terrible? [emoticon]

I owned my original UltraFab for 7 yrs, used on 2 trailers, sold it privately after I had sold the last trailer on which it was used. No issues so far with my current 3502. [emoticon]

Easy solution though if you don't agree ... buy something else. [emoticon]

Just finishing season 2 with my Harbor Freight. It's noisier than most but still does what it's supposed to. My TW in only 500# though. I keep a 1 gallon bucket over it at all times to keep the rain out/off of it. It will lift the rear of my truck loaded with "stuff" to make the engaging of the E2 WD hitch a breeze.

Don't know if I would have bought an HF jack if I used my trailer a lot. We camp 8 to 10 times a year. Not sure about its longevity but I viewed it as a $100 gamble!

How many years ago did you buy the one that lasted 7 years? Was it prior to being made in China? While 58% rated it 4 stars or above a full one third of the buyers gave it 2 stars or less, that's a huge number. Yes you are correct about not agreeing and that's why I now have an Attwood which has an 86% 5 star rating.

camperforlife wrote:

Nice try [emoticon] but I didn't say my UltraFab tongue jack "lasted 7 years" but rather it served the purpose just fine in the 7 yrs I owned it. I sold it after selling our KZ Spree and I'd have no reason to believe it isn't still in service.

If you had read that independent testing report to which I linked earlier you'd know that UltraFab claims a reduction in claimed failure rate of 1.7% of sales in 2010 to just 0.7% in 2014, or 7 out of every 1000 manufactured and sold, a failure rate any manufacture would be proud of. Obviously if owners don't report a failure the manufacturer won't know about it. Whining on internet forums and so-called online consumer "reviews" by those who feel they've been "wronged" serves little purpose if they're not also willing to report any failure to the manufacturer. [emoticon] I have no dog in this race - the OP asked for a tongue jack recommendation and I simply gave mine, whether he chooses to go with an UltraFab or something else is entirely up to him. [emoticon]

SoundGuy, sorry if I came across wrong I really wasn't trying to call you out on anything.

I was just curious as to how long ago you bought the UltraFab because my experience has not been good with the two that I have owned and the dealer that is my go to dealer for service quit selling them because of all the warranty returns.

Who knows, I've only had the Attwood for 6 months and I may be singing a different song next summer.

I have the Atwood with Robofoot and it works well. Black is $230, but the white on is only $168.

I bought my first UltraFab tongue jack for use on our 2007 R-Vision TrailCruiser which we purchased in 2006 then later used it for another 6 yrs on our 2008 KZ Spree which we purchased in 2007. This was obviously a pre-2010 version and the one thing I really liked about it is that the head could be rotated a full 180 degrees by simply removing the 4 head bolts, as shown in these two pics.

When the LCI tongue jack that came with our current Coachmen was showing signs of gear slippage I decided to replace it before complete failure and chose another UltraFab, thinking I could rotate the head as I had on the previous unit and thereby clear the rather tall tailgate on our Avalanche. What I didn't know at the time was that UltraFab redesigned this tongue jack so it's now not as easy to rotate the head. I emailed UtraFab about this and the answer was that although it was still possible it does mean taking the head apart so as an alternative they've provided additional holes in the tongue jack base plate. Since this particular tongue jack is no wider on the side than it is on the rear turning the entire jack just 90 degrees achieved the same result of minimal interference with the truck tailgate. Whether any of this is of concern to the OP only he can say but I'm happy with my own all metal UltraFab 3502. [emoticon]

Lots of good info, thanks guys.
So a little unclear if I need a 3000k, 3,500k or 4000k jack with my 1,000-1100 tounge weight... Anyone clear me up on how strong I need??

Also, I do have a golf cart in truck bed at all times, and tailgate will only shut half way and I strap up the other half. Is the ultra fab, Atwood 81070 White Power Jack with Robofoot, or Husky Brute 87248 all the type that wont cause interference with this?
Thanks again!

Posted By: hawkeye-08 on 08/30/16 10:17pm

I figured at least 4000 for my setup, I like to jack up the trailer with the truck connected to make it easier to put the WDH bars on.

The Atwood I have has the head up high enough that it does not interfere with the tailgate.

Posted By: gaymeadowsman on 08/31/16 01:05pm

I bought Barker 3500 Power jack in 2007 for our 2007 Surveyor SV291. We used it right up until the trailer was totaled by a falling tree limb in 2014. I have my Barker in my storage shed and the first time i have to hand crank that slow, noisy Lippert jack that came on our new trailer, the Barker gets put back in service after and good cleaning and grease job.
