Topic: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Posted By: trailgranny50 on 01/09/15 07:13pm

Got carpet cut out and laid in dinette, table changed from north/south to east/west. That short leg remodel was a bugger! Trying to match the crimp on the raw edge of new post took a loooonnnngggg time. Have two video gaming chairs for reclining and TV viewing. Much better arrangement! Added new matching carpet on dinette step up to match while I had the table leg bases off. Not much old faded blue left. Fixed latch on converter door. Still have to install some quarter round and edge cap on carpet edges in dinette and run new electric from spare open breaker to back of dinette for heater on floor. Always tomorrow and it is inside plugged in.

Did my least favorite chore. Changing the in rail fuel filter under the truck. It takes a snubbed 5mm allen to remove the plug and drain the fuel water separator so that you don't take a major diesel bath when you unscrew the filter cap, which takes a 36mm socket and you only have enough room to do 1/8th of a turn at a time. Then you have a couple of cups of bad diesel to burn off when you are done.

fuel water separator port is on the side just above the fitting holding the corrugated line on the filter body ( far right of photo) you have to work between the front drive shaft and the frame rail.

Buzz...Ford sure does make it a pain. Dodge is on top, but since the fuel pump went away at 122K I decided to go aftermarket pump and filters. They hang under the bed driver's side...two spin off canisters, water sep and partical filters...makes life so much simpler...don't even have to fill the filters when new but always do...the new pump is so much better. Have a great new year!

FYI.You should only run Motorcraft filters. I preorder them from the local International dealer in town. I had injector issues with the cheaper brands.
I owned an 03 and only had one injector go out. I loved the 6.0

Pjay9,

I agree my 2006 Dodge 5.9 Cummins fuel filter change is a breeze to change after watching a youtube video. After shops charging me about 110.00 bucks to change a 15.00 filter I started to do it myself over 2 years ago. Only use Fleetguard for my truck. Heck I change it every 5000 miles. Sorry bout your fuel pump. Hope to avoid pump and injector replacement. Truck has 118,600 miles.

A few things to note about the Powerstroke fuel filter/system:

1. There's an updated, THUMB screw style HFCM drain plug (been available for a number of years now). No allen key, diesel fuel bath necessary anymore. updated water fuel separator plug 6.0 powerstroke
PSDparts.com is the lowest price I've found at around $12. I'm sure you can get em on ebay cheap too. It's a no brainer and not worth the fight and mess otherwise.

2. When removing the filter cap, use an extra long ratchet extension that will reach past the crossmember. You're now in much better position for leverage and out of the way of falling fuel.

3. Yes. Only Motorcraft or International filters should be used if you want to avoid premature injector failure. Should be able to get 200+K miles out of a set of stock injectors if the recommended filters are used and maintenance is done.

4. Adding cetane booster/fuel conditioner to every tank is also necessary to get maximum fuel pump/injector life.

This job, realistically, should be no more than 10 min and an easy one, if you have the right tools and method.

Finally got stabilizing tiedowns on truck and cargo tray to keep it level and take the annoying flop when using steps built into it. Making another insulated curtain for kitchen window, reinstalling a better TV mount. Next couple days as it warms up will glue down new dinette carpet and add finish edge trim and quarter round on all edges. Deciding if and how to add awning to passenger side. Have a cabana room on tiny horse trailer that we could use by just adding awning track but mounting height tough to determine with it off the truck. Probably just wait on that till we throw it back on truck in March. Adding new 110 outlet for electric heater to do away with extension cord. Not a good doggie chew toy!

I think the 06 had a better fuel unit...I was lucky mine went that long..many had them replaced under factory warrantee...but I sure do like the after market unit..so simple and higher pressure to rail.
