Topic: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Posted By: Jon L on 03/01/13 06:22pm

Before last weeks de-winterize and maiden voyage of the new year, installed a programable thermostat. I love that thing. No more getting up to a cold camper. Today i installed a replacement drawer closer.

Today received my 36" Super Truss. Didn't come through very well as it was supposed to be delivered yesterday and then they took it back last night for an inspection. They delivered it today and I asked what the reason for not delivering yesterday and the box had come opened and spilled out the contents. So they put it all back into the box and sealed it up and delivered today.

Well when I opened it up it was messed up a lot of the paint was scratched up. The bracket that hold the 7 pin plug was bent and the paint was cracked off from it. There was no packing on the inside to keep the pieces from rubbing each other and they had rubbed quite a bit. The decals were messed up and some of them were missing. I ordered it from Tweety's so I called them and told them what happened and they told me there is supposed to be packing material inside to protect it. They are getting another one on the way to me and having the shipping company pick this one up so went back out to the shop and packed it all back up and it is sitting in the garage whating for the shipper to pick it up.

Bummer!
I hate when that happens. If it was cosmetic only, you might ask Tweety's if they will comp you back some of the cost. After all, they will have to pay for another complete ship round trip and then resell that one as used or damaged for a mark down. Plus all the trouble to do the paper work. Maybe 50% off or store credit.

I finally resolved the day one problem that my 2013 AF 865 had with the fresh water tank.

The tank is in the basement and is oriented north/south. The pickup is at the far north end. In addition to being located at the far north end, it is a top mounted pickup. If the tank was 1/3 full and the nose of the camper is even a bit nose high, the pickup could not reach the last 10+ gallons of water. This would shorten the amount of days we could dry camp.

The solution was to find the lowest point in the tank plumbing and T into it to supply the pump with water all the way until the tank was dry.

This low point happened to be located conveniently at the water drain inside the service door.

I just T'd into it and ran a 1/2 hose under the dinette and shower to the water pump.

I left the other connection in place, in the unlikely event that the nose will be so low that the bottom drain isn't the lowest point. I can still get at all the water in the tank.

I think this is design flaw on the 865 and I would not be surprised if other AF's and other manufacturers share this problem. That is....leaving lots of water in the tank that cannot be reached by wrongly placed pick up tubes.
