If I were going to put batteries where the spare tire went, I would build an angle iron rack for all of them with a center eyelet and I would use the spare tire winch to lift the rack in place. I would have a safety pin on each side to secure the rack. It would make it easy to service the batteries. By the way, where do you put your larger spare? I bought a Ford Super Duty spare tire winch off of a wreck and installed it on the tongue of my trailer to winch the spare tire under the tongue. You can see the cable hanging down in this picture. ![]() The receiver tube to the back of the winch is the mount for the slide out Camp Chef 3 burner grill. I can't wait to use it. Good luck on your battery mount. I have been trying to move the weight as far forward as I can to keep things balanced out. Not much to report. My work has been unexpected busy but I'm hoping to get back to it soon. I've said that a bunch of times before, but first things first. On the other hand I'm picking up a Suzuki Samurai toad this week-end. Yet another project. Heh.

I don't carry a spare. I call a tire company and have them bring one, like I did on my MoHo. On really long trips, I do carry a spare rim, because they are not easy to get a hold of. If it is a short trip of a day or less, I leave the rim at home. I guess if I really needed it, I could have someone bring it, or rent a car and go fetch it. I am not to sure that I would use the cable since I am planning on 4 batteries. That would be 300 battery weight plus the bracketry. I was thinking about a crossbeam support on the bottom and using a transmission jack to get them our, seeing that they would not need to be changed all that often. as for servicing, I would use a "Flow-Rite remote filler. I would run a couple of extra cables so that I could hook up my load tester, segregated and combined. The DW just told me, today, that we are taking a break from any upgrades until later this winter. Taxes and insurance are going to bury us in the next three months. Oh well, more time on the drawing board. |

If you wanted it self contained, Harbor Freight sells very inexpensive, lightweight, electric winches that would easily pull up 300#. |

It came out to 3000# wet and ready to go for the camper the last time . Last week I had the truck weighed at a CAT scale and will have it weighed again with camper in 2 weeks . I will report back. Advertised dry weight for C-10 is 1850# and for C-11 is 2150# . Final results at CAT scales Truck , 02 GMC D/A ,GVWR 12000# , cab/chassis ,DRW , aluminum flatbed with dump hoist and subframe , 2 underbed boxes with some tools and fluids, 50gals diesel , 300# of passengers weight = 8280# Camper , 68 Avion C-11 , 20gal water tank full , 2 7gal water tanks full , frig full , 40# propane full , closets full , sides full of stuff ( chairs , 2000 Honda , jacks and extensions , all kinds of other STUFF ). weight , truck and camper and stuff , ready to rock and roll=11620#. So camper and stuff = 3340# ready to camp Please share some pics of the bathroom when it's done as I have to do a total repair/replace in my C11 and curious on your results. So far your work has been fantastic and I've learned a LOT from this posting. Keep up the good work. My project starts next spring as right now I'm reworking a 13 foot Boston Whaler. |

ticki2, this is a picture of the bottom of the original Thetford toilet. Is this the type that you have? What parts do you need? I don't see the six screws but I'll give you whatever you need from this one.![]() For those that are doing a rebuild, we spent a lot of time talking to the folks at Thetford, including one of the top folks in the parts department that has been there a long time. They don't have any parts for these old toilets. The other issue is that this toilet is a couple inches shorter than the low profile, new toilets. I decided to redo the bathroom to take a modern toilet. Avion had 3-1/2" of wood under that closet flange and fiberglass cover to make up for this very short toilet. I made the holding tank higher by 1" and took out all but one 3/4" board to make the modern low profile toilet the proper height. I went with the cheaper, and lighter plastic unit, with the intention of replacing it every 10 or 15 years. * This post was edited 09/08/12 10:02am by 69 Avion * |
