![]() reddog wrote: ![]() I do not recall seeing any Avions that were painted. Can someone post a couple of photos or links? I think it was posted by 69Cayo several weeks ago. But, I have seen one other one. I hope to locate a really nice metallic green - or something. Actually, I change my mind a lot until the deed is done. |

garry, I didn't ask that question since there are major seams up there from the roof joints. My camper had the top pop riveted on and every one was sticking out with the rivet shaft being broken off above the rivet because the collet of the rivet gun was wore out and nobody bothered to change it.

That's odd , I've only found buck rivets . '68 Avion C-11 '02 GMC DRW D/A flatbed |

That's odd , I've only found buck rivets . My 1969 camper has a row on each side that runs along the seam of the upper aluminum. It is under the top coating that was applied at the factory. After sitting in the AZ sun for 43 years, much of that factory coating came off and exposed the pop rivets that are on top. The issue that I have is that the shaft of the rivets stuck up about 1/8" above the rivets instead of the rivets being smooth with no shafts sticking out of the rivet head. I don't know if all the 1969 campers had pop rivets on top, but it appears to be a cost savings move, just like the galvanized pipe for the LP gas. Neither one of those changes was for the better, but they were on the camper. Not only are my rivets on top not Buck rivets, but the installation was terrible. I would take pictures of them but they have already been recoated. If I had the patience, I would have ground down all the shafts so that they were flush with the heads. |

Is is possible that some time in the past your roof was repaired ? There is rivet called an olympic rivet which is a pop rivet with a solid shaft that was used for repair on Airstreams . When installed it would have the shaft stick up as you describe and would then be shaved , grind off the exposed shaft . When done properly you have to look close to see it is not a solid head . I have not stripped the top coating so cannot verify the type rivets used on the roof , but all other rivets on mine are buck rivets . |

I'll bet that there are not too many families that still own their Avion campers from new. The top has never been changed and neither have many other items except for the trickle charger, before my restoration. The camper was probably as close to original as you could find out there. The rivets don't look like those solid head rivets. They are definitely pop rivets that had a rivet gun with a wore out collet so it didn't pull the shaft out properly. |

OK! I need the secret for getting the fiberglass guard off the back of my 69.. I wanted to get to work on the plumbing but I cant seem to remove this thing! All visible screws and rivets are out, what am I missing?
