Avion C-11 Something to check on the window leak , I had a similar problem . First is the rubber seal at the top of the movable lower window . Over time they tend to shrink and no longer cover the very ends of the window . I put new seals on and made sure they went past the end of the frame . The water was getting in at the upper corners of the movable windows . I found replacement rubber seals at Vintage Trailer Supply that fit the groove of the window. Second was the joints at the bottom of the frame ( next to the weep hole) . These joints need to be caulked or what water does get in follows the rib down to the bottom channel on the wing and eventually finds it's way out somewhere . '68 Avion C-11 '02 GMC DRW D/A flatbed |

Great work. I am especially interested in the window repair. In the not so distant future I want to swap out the old windows...in the meantime I want my windows to be waterproof.

The C-11's use the newer Plexiglass style windows. The C-10's used the old Jalousie/Louver style windows. They are similar, but not exactly the same. An a side note, I saw this on Craigslist in WA state... One Owner!!! Nice!!! Avion C-10 Garry * This post was edited 03/05/12 01:19pm by garryk6 * Garry K Wife + 4 kids Retired Military Family.... garryk6 wrote: ![]() What type of rivets and rivet tool are you using??? Curious minds need to know... Thanks, Garry Garry, I have used 3 types of rivets on this project so far. Standard aluminum pop rivets, Olympic rivets which work like a pop rivet but have a head that can be finished to look like a normal rivet and on these last patches I used buck (normal) rivets. Technically if you can get to both sides of the rivet you should do bucked rivets but since I the air compressor was unavailable for everything I have done so far I used Olympics in a few places. The good thing about rivets is that they can be removed without damaging anything. So, I can go back and replace the Olympics ones now. BTW, Vintage Trailer Supply sells all the stuff you need to do this. |

Ticki2, it sounds like you ha the same issue. I found all the seals and gaskets for the entire window setup at Interstate RV and Metal Supply. They order them directly from Hehr. They also had all the ones for the Jalousie I have in the back. I ordered them but it does not leak one bit. So, my dilema is to fix the windows in place. That means the window glazing in the plexiglass windows will will have to stay in the frame and be caulked from the outside or, take the whole window structure out of the camper (i.e drill all the rivets) and totally disassemble the windows and replace all the seals and glazing. Thoughts?? |

Gary, Their olympic rivets, found here............... http://www.vintagetrailersupply.com/Olympic_Rivets_p/vts-179.htm You can use a regular pop rivet gun to pull them. Once pulled you have a stem sticking out that gets clipped off with a pair of dykes then filed or shaved with a rivet shaver tool.... http://www.vintagetrailersupply.com/Olympic_Rivet_Shaver_p/vts-177.htm Dennis |

Avion C-11, I removed all of my windows mainly to replace the glazing (alot of crazing) and replaced all the seals. It's alot of work and getting the windows out is only half of it, getting 40 yr. old windows apart with frozen rusted screws was not fun. If you decide to do it get yourself a can of Aerokroil to help with the frozen screws. Were it not for me wanting to replace the glazing I would not do it again. Dennis |

Thanks Dennis! Did you put the windows back in with Olympic or Buck rivets. It looks very hard to buck those rivets behind the channels.

69 cayo From your experience is it possible to replace the fixed upper plexiglass without removing the frame . One side of mine has discolored from the UV rays and has a pinkish tint . Avion C-11 I have not removed any windows yet , trying hard to avoid . What I did do is cut back the rubber glazing on the outside with a razor , clean thoroughly with alcohol and caulked all around. So far so good . |
