Wow, I've just been looking at the polishing you guys have been doing - not sure I would have the patience for that, but it looks fantastic - well done.

Steve.

How about stainless steel ? Seems like it would be perfect, easily cleaned and holds up to most chemicals/foods that's why it is used in restaurants. Put down a plywood base and then glue down the stainless. Not sure what to do for the front edge maybe wood ?

See if you can find a metal fabrication shop that will use a metal brake on the stainless and have them bend over the front lip to cover the wood.

Polishing – Under The Cabover And Under The Wings.
Feb5

This weekend we got the underside of the bunk and the right wing polished. These areas were heavily corroded and in addition to the deanodizing process we used Scotchbrite paint remover pads in Fine and Medium Grit to get off a lot of the calcifications and some of the pitting. Working over your head is great upper body exercise and both my Dad and I are totally spent after working in this manner for two days. The good news is that we made major visible progress and we are oh-so-close to lowering the stand and hitting the last third of the polishing up top.

This was the first section I polished under the bunk after all the prep work. That's about as much over the head work I could handle in one go.

Then I did a little work in the corners. This is the toughest area to polish. You need several different angles to get to it all.

It took about 2 hours of polishing to get this far.

We tried several different methods to hold the grinder up. Sticks, ladders and so forth. Nothing really worked except sucking it up and going at it with the arms and shoulders.

The wheel is the best thing for cleaning up around screws and rivets.

It took a full morning until lunch time to buff out under the bunk and clean up the front wall and corners.

Damn it was worth it though!

Polishing the wing was almost resting compared to the bunk!

Here's a good look at some pitting and me.

Polishing the wing went quick. About and hour to get it mostly done.

That's hot!!! I'm starting to really like polishing!

The patches I did on the wing corners polished up great!

Polishing is seriously dirty work!

I’ve been following this thread for a while. Everything looks great.

I have seen a lot of Avion campers in my day. This is the first one I have ever seen that has been polished.

It looks great. Truly one of a kind.

X2. I especially like that this is a father-son effort! Sure wish my boys were here, but they're doing what I did at their age....seeking their fortune here and abroad.

Thanks guys, I am glad you are enjoying the pics. It has been a great blessing for my father and I to do this together. We have both had big projects before where we helped each other but this is the first one where we are really working it together. Its been fun!

Garry, I'm sorry about the good weather down here. It's been a weird winter in as much as we haven't had one. It s been int he 60s and 70s a lot lately. This time last year we had a freak 8 inches of snow. When the heat index here this summer hits 1000 degrees the grass is going to be much greener up there in Ak.
