67Avion, those cabinets are looking good . Did you strip them or sand them ? I have only one door that needs to be refinished , the rest are in very good condition . Did you ever find a stain to match the original color ?
Did you do anything to the hardware ?

Garry, thats a very interesting product. They claim its 100% waterproof. the only issue would be the area on the floor underneath the flooring that might get moist. One thing that concerned me was whether I could install it on the risers for the bed area and in the very front of the coach. I had planned to cover those areas with laminate, but I was unsure how this product could be fastened on the edges since its free floating. As it turns out there was an example on the website of Home Depot. Take a look:

They covered the tread and the riser with the product and used stair trimming to keep it in place. They also say that you can opt to glue it down using a urethane glue. So, this is something that might work.

Many thanks for letting me know about it.

That is all sanding. Starting with 80 grit and ending with 320. I can't emphasize enough how the wood has to be finished a perfectly as possible before the varnish. I did not find a stain that would match. Instead I applied the Danish Oil and then the Spar Varnish to the refinished old wood. I also cut down some of the existing, damaged doors to the cabinets in order to replace other damaged doors.

The hardware is for the most part new. The OEM drawer handles are still in place as well as the bathroom door handle. The squeeze latches are available at Vintage Trailer Supply. I looked for a long time to replace everything in nickel, but I simply couldn't assemble enough matching pieces to make it work. the original coach had the brass latches, though probably not polished brass. I had to switch the latches on the back cabinet doors to ice box latches in brass. They are sturdy enough to keep the doors from flying open (I think).

Hard to say how Rhino Liner would work. The original paint, on my Avion, was Zolatone. Its a "spatter finish" that you will find in car trunks for instance. It was used inside Airstreams as well as Avions, though I understand Avion switched to vinyl in 1968. I would urge you to take a look at Zolatone. I had the interior completely repainted with it.Its as hard as a rock and will clean easily. But, I decided that the bottom of the coach, what we call the "tub", would look better in a non spatter finish. The marine paint that I used is a good choice as other marine polyurethanes. Take a look at Jamestown Distributors who carry a huge line of this stuff.

I have been struck how our Avions have some qualities of boat cabins and some qualities of WW2 aircraft. Its a unique brew. All I'm doing is honoring the work of the good folks who designed and built these machines and hope that my work lasts for a long, long time. I also hope that more people read our threads and that the Avion TCs all over the country get scooped up.

I thought you might be talking about painting the outside of the tub under the wings and such. No, my interior will be the original vinyl and wood with corian counters. I'm thinking about sealing up the bottom of the outside skin under the wings and floor with some type of rubberized liner material.

Happy Camping!

I have aluminum under the wings on my Avion. Not so with yours? The floor should definitely be sealed. I also place a hard foam 4x8 foot sheet on the bed of the truck to prevent water seepage and to provide some insulation.

Mine is normal. Just like the rest with aluminum skins all the way around. I was just thinking of coating the undersides of the wings, tub, pan and floor with a waterproof rubberized paint. The rest of the aluminum on the outside would be normal exposed skin.

I finally got to clean and wax my TC today. The entire time I was thinking about this post. This will be my next project.

Do you mean rebuilding an Avion TC? As the ad says from October of 1965, "There's a lot you have to forget about pickup campers when you start learning about this new Avion. Its just not like the others".

The add from 1965 mentions some 8 1/2 foot TC's. All I have ever seen (in person or online) has been the C-10 and the C-11. Has anyone ever seen the shorter TC? My C-10 is roughly a 1966 after talking with the folks at Cayo RV. The 1965 pic has a C-10 and the clearance lights are down low vice up in the "normal" locations, and the front section seems a tiny bit different, but I can't pin-point what is different. Thanks for the great original Add!

Hey guys,

What water heater are you all running? I'm ready to fill that hole in my camper and would like to get one ordered. I have not seen a new unit that fits the hole exactly. What are you all doing?
