Topic: Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

Great work!!! I'm happy that the calculations were correct. From the sound of things, you were sweating out the fasteners. I remembered where I saw the StableLift and the Avion camper. Its in the "Silver Avions and Cayos" book and it shows a 1965 Avion camper. By the way the back cover shows the Motorvator that we were talking about. Thanks to 69avion I found the book and ordered it.

Thanks yes I really sweated the measurements. You have to get this right front to back and side to side AND space it to clear the dually fenders ! I still have to adjust the hoops that contact the ground, the front cross bar needs to go back further to the next bolt hole. And I still have to drill the front/rear cross bars and bolt them up. But she's 95 % done. I have to say this Stable Lift for $400.00 was a steal and the best $$$ I've spent in a long time !!!

I like it. It turned out great. I can't wait to hear your camping reports.

Unfortunately I'm at least a year to a year and a half away from being ready to camp [emoticon] But I'll keep plugging along and will finish the job. My goal is to be at the 12 hours of Sebring for 2015.

Howdy!
I do like your lift rfuerst. I have a question
to yall. I have a wiring mystery. I hooked up
the trailer harness to my camper using the 1968
pinout. I dunno if there was a change from
1964 to 1968. Anyhow I get nothing on the exterior
lights(running, stop, and turn). I do get correct
voltage on the interior and all works perfectly!!!!!!!
I have no battery bank or inverter yet. I get the same
results no matter where on the harness I connect
positive power to( pins in the trailer harnas) as long I leave
the ground alone. Now I know I have an early C10,
I just do not see how power to the running lights
power the interior only? Any ideas where these things
could be crossed? I am mystified.

I hooked mine up to the truck the other day for the first time. I do not have a battery installed in the camper but some of the outside lights worked so I think my wiring is good. If your lights are original there's a good chance they are corroded or not working. Maybe pop the covers and check with a meter to see if you are getting 12 volts ?

Howdy!
I get 12 volts inside on everything. I get zero on all
exterior sockets, except of course the scare light
which is 12 volts. What I can not figure out is why
I get this by hooking up the trailer light harness
only. they show a dedicated fuse for the charging line
of the trailer harness that connects to the battery(which I
do not have installed. I do not know where that fuse is.
I do have the two 12 volt interior fuse block which sees
12 volts good. Its connection to the trailer harness
is a mystery. Help!

My C-11 has an access panel on the right side in the cabover bed area. That is where the lights are connected and there are some automatic circuit breakers in there.

If you have the power going to the hot leg of the camper, it will power up interior lights, which include the door's exterior light.
I think there is a wiring diagram in this thread somewhere. It would be nice to have an index for a thread this large. Any Volunteers? LOL

As I recall, the wire color coding of the exterior lights are not the same as a modern color code. I was going to change mine, but I didn't feel like digging in that little access panel.

My C-11 may be different since my grandfather took out the interior battery and put an extra battery on the truck in the early 1970s. I know we changed the wiring a little, but it didn't have anything to do with the exterior running lights. We took the battery vent off and put an electrical cover over it with new, heavy wiring from the new truck battery to the camper. We ended up with two RV plugs on the camper. The right side was the original wiring for the camper (including the hot and ground) and the left 7 pin RV plug was for a doubled up ground (2 # 10 wires) and a doubled up hot (2 # 10 wires) and additional wires for an alarm. When I rebuilt the camper I put new wires on the right side with new plugs on both sides.

Need advice on how to clean the exterior ? Years of crud, left over decal adhesive etc. I need to clean before resealing all the seams. Can I use a Scotchbrite pad ( maybe white low grit ) along with maybe TSP as a cleaning solution ? I want to at least get the roof clean from the awning rails and up so I can caulk the roof seams and recoat the roof. Whatever that black stuff is that Avion applied it seems to be on there pretty good with just one spot that I see that has some flaking. I'd like to coat the roof with silver mobile home roof coating or some other silver product. I don't want white/black against that silver skin. Thoughts on roof coating ? And finally once the anodized skin is clean is there a clear product that can be brushed/rolled/sprayed on for protection ? I'd like some extra protection against water intrusion for possible tiny holes or rivets that appear tight but might not be.

The wiring is a bit funky to be sure . On my 68 the charge line was separate from the plug and was a heavy black wire , I think 8 ga. . You will also notice in the wiring diagram that both the white and blue are grounds . The white connects to the frame or skin internally somewhere , haven't found it . The blue on mine goes all the way to the right rear tail light and had to be connected to ground . Then at the plug both white and blue had to be connected to the same ground lug . I suspect that somehow you are backfeeding one of the blue or white grounds to be getting interior lights without a battery . Without the double ground my exterior lights don't work . Good luck
