If you put even a few gallons in the water tank it balances fine. If the water tank is full it has a great balance. Have you read or experimented to determine the COG ? I have been loking for that info . I actually called Cayo one time but they said they didn't know . I had a camper (RV) magazine from 1970 that had the Avion C-11 on it and they had done the calcs. The CG, empty was just behind the axle, the CG wet was in front of the axle. The camper in the article was technically the Cayo, but it had the same layout as my 1969 C-11. There is something I'd like to mention to our Avion community, and others. I emphasize that it is tentative and may not happen. Over the holidays I met with Whazoo (Dave) and his wife Lynn. We talked about gathering at the Overland Expo, May 17-19, Flagstaff, Arizona. Subsequently I was in touch with Steve (sabconsulting) in England, and he is definitely going to be there as well. Then Steve said that Silversand was going to be in the region and might attend. So, I have also made plans (if humanly possible) to get out to Flagstaff for the meet up. The Expo is real expensive so Whazoo and I talked about getting reservations at a nearby campground and attending on a day pass. The idea, I suppose, is that we'll circle the TCs somewhere for a Whazoofest. That's all I know at this point, but I wanted to pass it along. D ![]() |

This is how it looked when I bought it.. ![]() ![]() Here is a mid way through the project. ![]() I don't have any pics of The current configuration But I'll try to get some soon. I have the new cushions in it, and since these pics, I now have a new 3 burner stove top, vent hood, and a microwave under the stove top. As for COG, I need to figure it out. I did get actual weights, so I know that I am over original GVRW, but I am within axle and tire weights. Need some good weather to get working on it again for spring! Whazoofest - love it ![]() Since Whazoo has the local knowledge I'll bow to his expertise re. the camping. Didn't know they charged a lot for camping at Expo. Guess if we want to look at a local campground it probably needs to be organised well in advance to ensure there is space for anyone who wants to join in. Would love to see some Avions there ![]() ![]() Maybe I'll start another thread about this shortly - I really need to get thinking about it and planning where we go (currently we just know we start and end at Denver with the apex so to speak being Expo). The idea, I suppose, is that we'll circle the TCs somewhere for a Whazoofest. I just checked the accommodation page of the Expo website. I know Expo are selling fancy packages that are really expensive and come with camping with hookup etc., but it also looks like they have basic camping which to be honest might be more the ticket for truck campers - here is what it says: "Day pass attendees are welcome to camp in the basic camping area for $10 per night on an as-available basis (it’s a really large area, and we don’t expect to fill up). The site is a wide, level grass field just north of and adjacent to the main exhibitor and training areas (map link). There will be porta-johns around the site, and flush toilets and limited shower facilities are available in the adjacent RV park, along with water for filling up." Steve. |

Steve, Whazoo just wrote me the same thing. Sorry about the miscommunication. He also says that the original idea was Bryan (bka) and Brian (btgraphics), so I should have acknowledged them as well. I don't know what happened to my communication skills - it was Whazoo who was drinking beer at lunch - not me.That was probably my mistake.

It sounds like it would be fun to get a bunch of Avions together.

Ah yes, that was your mistake - Whazoo had the beer, you didn't, so you weren't on the same communication wavelength (Whazoonication) ![]() ![]() Last year at the giant overland show in Germany the camp ground was almost the best part, with everyone wandering around looking at each other's vehicles, talking about modification, discussing where they had been over a beer. Scan of September 1971 Cayo C-11 article.![]() This 1971/1972 Cayo unit has a different layout than mine. I thought it was the same, but it has only been 30 years since I read the article. LOL According to the article it weighs 2,240# dry. It has side windows at the sleeping area (I can live without another potential place to leak) and a light where the hose and electical storage is. It also has a Thetford 18 gallon tank instead of our 12 gallon original tank. It still has a 30 gallon water tank and no gray water tank. I can honestly say that I like the Avion C-11 layout that mine has better. The reason is the weight is up front. This one has a closet up front and the dinette in the back. They say that the CG is behind the rear axle when it is dry, but they don't say how far behind. They do say that it handles better than any other camper of that size that they have tested. It is also called a 11-1/2' camper. The recommended pickup truck GVW is 8,000# for that camper. I'm sure they are assuming a gas, (only option back then) 2wd truck. |
