What do you mean with regards to getting a higher GCWR? I assumed that the GCWR set by the manufacturer is the highest it can be, and can't be changed?

I had heard that you could get your TV re-certified for a higher GCWR. I wish I had my truck and 5th wheel weighed before actually purchasing the unit. I would not have bought what I did if I had known what the total weight was. Not that my TV isn't more than capable of pulling my 5'er. But as it stands now, I am 500 lbs over my max GCWR. Maybe an excuse to buy a F450?

My 2009 Dodge Quad Cab Longbed 4x4 dually diesel with a 4:10 axle is rated at the following: Steer Axle 5200 lbs. Drive Axle 9350 lbs. GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) 12200 lbs. GCVW (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight) 24000 lbs. with 4:10 axle Max Trailer Weight 16900 lbs Okay, let's get to the numbers! We are full timers so are rig was weighed with everything we carry. On my first weigh with the rig (truck and trailer) and a 1/2 tank of diesel, my Certified weigh ticket reported: Steer Axle 4760 lbs. (Rated for 5200 lbs.) Drive Axle 6800 lbs. (Dually rated for 9350 lbs.) Trailer Axles 12380 lbs. (combined axles rated for 14000 lbs.) Gross Weight 23940 lbs. (Truck GCVW rated for 24000 lbs.) So, with all of those numbers in mind, I'm within the manufacturer's rated weights on my truck. With the trailer my GVW on the truck is 11560 lbs., well under the rated 12200 lbs. However, I'm only 60 lbs. under the manufacturer's GCVW of 24000 lbs. Now I should note that the GCVW is considerably less with a 3.73 rear axle at 21000 lbs. I went back to the scales after unhitching from our Cameo fifth wheel to weigh the truck separately. The truck only had a 1/2 tank of diesel but was loaded just as if traveling to include the dogs, storage box, hitch, inflatable kayak, satellite tripod, gray tote tank etc. The results of the truck weigh were as follows: Steer Axle: 4980 Drive Axle: 3740 Gross Weight: 8720 Now it's interesting to note that with the fifth wheel hitched it transfers 220 lbs. of truck weight off the steer axle and onto the drive axle. The numbers for our 2010 Cameo F35SB3 are: hitch weight: 2820 lbs. Axles weight: 12380 total weight: 15220 lbs. The manufacturer's GVW rating is 14999 lbs. So, we are over the GVW on the fifth wheel by 221 lbs. That's with about 20 gallons of water in the storage tank and empty grey and black tanks America by RV 2009 Dodge 3500 4x4 Laramie 2010 Carriage Cameo F35SB3 |

I am a 5th wheel want-a be! I would like some advice on the 5th wheel towing capacity for the rig we are thinking of buying. We brought a 2010 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab, 4x4, 6'6'' box, Duramax Diesel 6.6L V8 turbo, Allison transmission, 3.73 axle, with the 5th wheel trailing and Z71 packages. The GVWR is 9200#, GAWR Front 4860# Rear 6884#, GCWR 22,000#. The Chevy dealer helped me pick out a truck to tow a 5th wheel and says "this truck will haul anything". We are considering buying a Montana 3400RL with the Mor/ryde suspension system and several options. The shipping weight is 12460#, carrying capacity 3180#, hitch (King pin weight?) is 2140#, Fresh 66 gal., Waste 50gal., Grey 93gal., and LPG 60#. Tire size is 234/80R16E. The RV dealer says we will have "no problem" towing the 5th wheel with our truck (because it is a diesel). We would like to know what experienced 5th wheel owners think of this rig set up! After we retire next May, we intend to use the rig for a three month trip to Alaska!! Any advice on planning for that trip would be appreciated as well. Thank you. |

Be careful with a 3/4 ton and a unit that weighs that much. We have a Cameo which has a dry weight of approx. 11250 and pull with a one ton dually. The issue is not the diesel but the bed-load capacity and the GVW of the truck. We too were told " that truck will pull anything", and the dealer was wrong. If you are searching for stability, comfort and safety, just be careful. I made a mistake of believing a dealer, and it cost me dearly. I know many will extol the virtues of the diesel and a 3/4 ton, but to me there is no comparison between a one ton and a 3/4. I tried to send you a spread sheet sent me by a knowledgeable person on this subject but I cannot copy it to this post. PM me and I'll try to send it to you. alan [email protected] |
