I always had one problem or another with Windows 95/98/ME, but XP has been great.
Have never had a Blue screen of Death with XP either.
XP is, as some say, a menory hog. It was designed for more graphics. Something like MAC is. I have 512MB of Memory, but I can go to 1 GB. The more memory the smoother it runs.
I bought a Toshiba A75-s206 laptop last august, about $1100.00. It has XP home because I don't need all the fancy stuff that PRO has. We needed something small for the RV.
If I get rich I'll buy a MAC for heavy graphics work.
I just received my Direcway Satellite [Dustyfoot], but it is raining almost constantly here on the Oregon coast and I have to set it up. It's on a tripod.
I'm now using my Laptop with my Verizon Card and it is just running smooth.
It is hard to save money on these new technologies but it has worked out for me.
Just research before you buy and keep to well known dealers if you buy on the internet. Check out "Newegg.com. Good reputation and good prices.

Regarding Sprint, they will first send a warning letter and then cut off your service if they find you using up large amounts of bandwidth via their network. They simply do not wish to support Internet access via their cell phones. Lots of folks do, but the ones that abuse it with lots of continous bandwidth usage get caught and dumped.
Check the Sprint Users Group to read some horror stories.

What about those of us who (good or bad) are using TDMA ? phones, i.e. Nextel? Any hints or suggestions there?

That Sprint group is really helpful. It convinced me that Sprint will NOT be a mechanism for me to access the Internet from my PC except perhaps VERY casually. I'll either stick to WiFi or get an aircard from one of the providers with an unlimited plan.

We use the Verizon and T Mobile aircards for all of our personal and work internet access.
Verizon (5220) is faster (almost as fast as Broadband) and T Mobile is cheaper. We haven't had any coverage problems with either service.

Ok, you cell phone gurus, I've read this entire thread and I can't find the answer to my question.
I have a nokia 6360 cell phone with the irda interface. I downloaded the software from nokia to manage contacts on the computer and send the contacts back and forth between the cell phone without a cable. That works well.
What I want to do though, is use the cell phone while on the road to dial my ISP (road runner's dial-up number) to connect to the internet. Road Runner gives me 10 hours per month of dial-up service which is more than enough for me. And, I have plenty of minutes on my cell phone (Suncom).
Question is, how do I make Windows XP see the cell phone (through the irda port) as a modem?
The speed is no problem to me as all I'll be doing is checking my e-mail via webmail interface.

I have never used my cell phone to hook up to the INTERNET. But I want to... I have Verizon and my phone is a Samsung A650.. I found this cable on Ebay. Is this the one I need to get started?Click Here Also what else do I need to get hooked up? Do I need to call Verizon? Do I need some software? I use Outlook with Windows XP on my laptop.. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

I have Cingular's $3.99/mo data plan, with Motorola V180 and V400 phones. Got Susteen Data Pilot USB cables (1 for each phone) and software from Susteen.com. I have a Toshiba laptop, XP Home. Just got it going. Works OK through Compuserve, my ISP. Susteen's tech people talked me through setup. I'm using it just to test, until I see how much it's going to cost.

I have Sprint PCS and an Apple computer. As long as you have the "data package" that the cell phone companies sell, the Apple system OS X has the capability to run the cell phone like a modem. It works great for me. I have email and internet service all over the country. The cable to hook the computer to the phone is only a couple of bucks. I got one at Radio Shack.
