Thanks Gary, That sounds very affordable, but Gary I'm looking at At&T's web site and having trouble finding what you just described. Help please.

What is your service called, and what are your limitations for monthly data?

WOW! I just noticed......isn't technology great? Google Ad must monitor content and drops in advertising directed at the thread theme. Big brother is watching. Case in point an WifiRV ad was placed into this thread, I guess this is the only way to keep useful tools like this forum free. I'm not complaining, I appreciate the free access, it just wowed me when the penny dropped and I figured it out.

I am tethering a phone to a laptop via bluetooth. The phone determines the max connection rate, whether it is capaable of connecting via GPRS, EDGE, or HSDPA(3G). The service is an add on for a phone, MEdia Net Unlimited.
at&t Media Plans For Phones
These are plans for phone data. You arn't supposed to tether to a laptop but if you keep our monthly usage below 2 or 3 GB they haven't said anything. That is more than normal browsing and email.
I took the laptop to town with me today to see how it would do with a good signal and did a little less than 150 kb/s which is about half as fast as my DSL connection at the house.
During our 4 months in Alaska last year I tethered a slower speed phone for internet. My brother is in Anchorage, on Cellular One, so I added a phone to his plan. Over the winter AT&T bought out Cellular One so it is all at&t now. We are going back this year and I'm just making sure everything works as planned.

The problem with data cards is the two year contract.
If you want to be totally legal in tethering a phone you can use this one for $60/month and add it on and take it off of your plan on a month to month basis. PDA Personal with Tethering A plain phone can use this plan.

then you need to upgrade the driver for your printer

The phone dials the number and it seems like after AT&T Wireless can see its data the phone hangs up. The $15 deal sounds good but I'm not concerned with speed and would rather use my rollover minutes.

Is anyone using dial up with AT&T Wireless and getting it to work?

Hats off to MrWizard for all is input! This stuff just confuses me!!! I use Verizon - I haven't ever used the cellphone with my laptop - can I use Bluetooth to the RAZR to call my regular dial-up number (only option where i live) without getting billed by the mb? Thanks! ST
