hi everyone. just bought a 76 dodge coachman and really like it so far. did have one problem i was hoping someone could point me in the write direction. the air conditioner, original im assuming. was working great till the second day when all of a sudden my brand new generator started bucking then stalled out. after checking and restarting i noticed it would do it every time the compressor tried to kick on. got home and tried the electric from the house with the same results basically. so would my compressor be bad on the ac unit or could something else be causing it?

Sounds like something's up with the A/C, like the motor or fan is drawing too many amps (usually means it's on its way out). I'd get that checked.

Most home outlets only have 15 to 20 amps output and the AC unit needs 30 amps for the compressor start up. You can sometimes get one to start on 20 amps but most of the time it will kick the breaker. I think your AC is good just needs more amps.

But it did this on the home outlet only after it did it on the generator...

i plugged it in and got up on the roof yesterday and listened to see what it was doing. every time it tried to kick down it just clicked twice. more drama though. my wife had a portable air conditioner and i wanted to see if it worked out there since we have a trip planned in 2 weeks. plug it in and just fan runs.. hook up to the generator directly and it runs.. to powerful, ok so i get my bedroom ac unit witch is small and tried it. at first nothing and i was like wth. for what ever reason i turned the converter off to see and the ac unit kicked on with no problem. for a minute i thought i found the problem with the roof top ac unit but it still wouldn't work. same as before. yes it did work good plugged into the garage before the camping trip.

Two things. Make sure you are using the 30amp cord (with an adapter) to plug directly into the house power outlet (rather than an extension cord). Most extension cords can't handle an AC. Second, if you have already run the AC using an extension cord you may have damaged it. They really don't like low voltage which is what is likely to happen when using an extension cord. I suggest getting a plug-in voltage meter (Radio Shack, etc) to monitor the voltage when running an AC. I think these are about $15 or less. |

Well, most of you guys know I got rid of my '78 Dodge Citation last spring and replaced it with a newer Ford based C. Loved the power, hated the handling. The dodge handled like a tight small SUV after I got the suspension how I wanted it. The ford, I never got to handle, right. So I sold it. Wife wanted to go bigger, so looking for an old Dodge was out of the question. The ford was a 27 footer. So we replaced it with a '93 Chevy P-30 based Winnebago Cheiftain 32 footer. This thing handles really well and I can see putting some big miles on it, but I really miss the retro dodge. I still see her from time to time as the new owner and I keep in touch.
