Topic: How many of us are there? Owners of Dodge based RV's?

Posted By: Dr Rob on 11/10/07 05:33am

funny,i always wondered what class a,b,and c meant for rvs...

so,correct me if im wrong, but the rv you have is a big one, like mine trish?
and the one in detroit is a little one?
i have one of those little ones,i just! took a 360 out of about 2 weeks ago..

here in NY state, the rv-s are widely rejected at the junkyards...
they cant be cashed in,without first tearing all the guts out..
so most scrappers dont mess with them, and i save a lot of them.

Class A - Entire body, including driver's area, is built by motorhome manufacturer. (i.e., Travco, Winnebago, Explorer, etc.)

Class B - commonly called van conversions, most of body is built by chassis manufacturer. (i.e., Dodge, Chevrolet, Ford)

Class C - sometimes called a cut-away van, driver's area is built by chassis manufacturer (Dodge, Chevy, Ford) and rest of body is built by motorhome manufacturer (Travco, Winnebago, Explorer, etc.)

Trish, Leeann, and I own Class A's. 79powerwagon and glw have Class C's. I think cenote's is a Class B but can't be certain. (the Class B definition is kinda slippery, with some being called Class C's)

1972 Executive Class A on a Dodge M375 chassis with 413 cu. in.

as far as the other travco, it's sunk in the ground...at a campground, and been there for years..
its also a half an hour away from me,so im trying to get ahold of the park owners again,to make sure i can get a bill of sale, before we drag it out.
it has a 400bb,but dunno if it runs.(not the original motor)
as soon as i hear from them, ill let you know whats up with it Trish.[emoticon]

ABC-- what Griff said.

Yep, mine's a biggun.

Do not let the 'other' go. Travco glass is worth a LOT. I just a just a cheap proice of 350 (w/o S&H) on a drivers windsheild. And I will send him a MO soon as he sends me the shipping info...

Off the 'other' one, I'd like to have the cargo doors, the glass, window frames, b-room vent, roof vent ...whatever i can fit in my truck. *g*

Don't lose the tire wrench either. They're a bugger to find.
But I have one.

Well, I said a couple weeks ago we had test run the furnace and all was fine. After I posted, the bf went out and ran it again. And set something inside on fire (he claims it wasn't his fault).

Today, we took it apart and saw why...the channels in the burners where the flame travels were completely clogged with rust from disuse (you could not tell they were channels, not indentations). The unit backfired, setting a rubber grommet on fire (and slightly toasting the wires that went through the grommet). So we cleaned up the channels with a razor knife, brushed with an acid brush and knocked it on wood to dislodge any more. Then robbed our spare furnace for the 2 high-temp wires and a new grommet.

You might want to take yours apart before you test it and clean out those channels, just in case. After we cleaned ours, we ran it for over an hour with perfect flame and lots of heat. No smoke. It's just a few screws on the faceplate, 2 phillips screws on the gas valve support plate and a 3/4" wrench on the gas line. We have a Coleman, by the way.

Glad there wasn't a "major" fire with it Leeann. I know it's an old heater but, What make/model is it?

It's a Coleman - don't know offhand the model number, but it's an 18,000 (18-something, that is) BTU furnace. Our spare is an 23,000 (23-something) BTU Coleman.

It's the original from '73. The spare we have is from a '75 Winnie.

Your pictures had me checking the burner on my old Duo-Therm in mine... Fortunately I can see the whole burner after removing the inspection plate. They were clean and ran fine when I fired it up tonight.

Hope they both work after cleaning them out.

As far as I've been able to tell, there are three basic physical shapes and dimensions for RV heaters. The BTU input may differ but the dimensions within one of the basic shapes don't change.

Bottom line: there are brand new heaters that are a physical, slide-in replacement for the heater in my 1969 Explorer Class A.

Oh, it ran beautifully after the bf cleaned it out, for well over an hour. He adjusted the flame to blue and just not a yellow tip (the 'structions do say a slight yellow tip is okay). The CO alarm didn't complain, there was no smoke, no excess flame, the exhaust looked right (just water vapor, essentially) and the amount of heat it put out was impressive.

Like I said, he does this kind of work to furnaces that are 1000 times (and bigger) the size of this one; he actually called it 'cute' [emoticon]
