I'm headed to NO for Mardi Gras so last weekend I aired up the tires to 45 Lbs. to load the TC. They are Geolander HT/S series so 50 Lbs. max. These tires are 5 years old and the inner and outer sidewalls are fine but the space between the treads have some dry rot. These tires have about 15,000 miles on them so they have like new meaty tread. I just see some of what looks like dry rot in the lower vallies between the treads. Anyone seen this before? TIA Steve

X's 2 If you run them, you can suffer tread separation, and that ain't no good!

Are your current tires a "P" type or an "LT". I find the P's tend to decay rather a bit quicker than the LT types, but I also run 10 ply tires in a Load Range E LT tire vs the little wheels that are on Toyotas.

Five years old is OLD.
Buy new tires before your trip unless you'd like to buy new tires DURING your trip.

Perhaps after having suffered an inconvenient but predictable blowout along the way...

There are several lawsuits involving "old" tires ongoing and several European countries are now placing age limits on tires. Here is a ABC news story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngIK4dmTGic
$10,000 camper, $40,000 truck + your life riding on $1000 worth of tires, your call.

You don't want your 5 yr. old tire looking like this. This was a week after I took the TC off, and I just unloaded 2500 lbs. of tile and coming back from a job 200 miles away...Some one was watching over us.

No, old are the 1996 Michelins we still have on our family's '85 Chevy Suburban that are still not dry rotted. Even older were the '89 Uniroyal Tube Bias ply tires on our family's '79 Chevy C20 camper special that we sold back in 2006 that also weren't dry rotted and held up to hauling heavy loads.

We've had a few tires that do look like the ones in the picture, they were Deltas (A garbage brand) P type tires that were on the Suburban before the Michelin LTs. The rears threw their treads from being overheated by being overloaded carrying a van full of band equipment up the freeway.
