I was reading on one of the other sections this morning in regards to a new Winnie Class C based on the Sprinter chassis with the 3L diesel.
What caught my eye when I linked with their website was the weight capacity of this thing. The GVWR is 11,030 and the GCWR is 15,250 (copied off website). If this little 3L is capable of taking care of 11k and 15k weight with that little 3L diesel what kind of weights would our North American diesels be rated for if they were put into the same units especially the GCWR. In theory you should almost be able to tow a second unit behind you of the same weight. I guess my question really is are we moving to some different weight/tow ratings in the future based on some smaller engines like the above and the Ecoboosts of this world coming out. As long as your tow vehicle is capable of the weight load and stopping it we can put small engines and still be able to tow the 15k fifth wheel down the road and not need a 6l or more size diesel to pull it along. What do you guys think? I would love a 3/4 ton truck that I could drive everyday to work and get good gas and still be able to pull a 10k+ trailer or fifth on the weekend. I know we are close with the f150 but I am speaking more of the 3/4 to 1 ton trucks as they have done in the Winnie.

Just look at the hp and torque ratings from 15 years ago. People have towed large loads for years with less than 300 hp and less than 400 lb ft of torque.

Thanks

It all depends on what kind of performance you want out of it. With the correct gearing, you can get a very low hp/tq engine to move a large load, just not very fast.

Winnebago might just have different performance standards than the pickup truck manufacturers do. That is likely due to the fact that magazine after magazine tests the big 3 diesels head to head and publishes the results, and we all talk about them. Not too many tests like that using mini motorhomes.

Well they are going to need a diet then What's a new F250 weigh ? about 8k?
With a GCWR (most overrated rating) of 15k your trailer max weight would be 7k
It would work for some folks who don't tow much weight or some of the flatlanders. I don't think many folks here would be happy with that TV.

I guess my real point on the above setup is not just what this particular unit does but how small of engine size they are using to haul that kind of weight. Maybe those 5l Ecoboost dreamers or the smaller diesels that never quite made it to production would fill that gap somewhere between that Winnie and the beasts we are using today and get that GWCR i that 20k+ range instead of under and allow towing of bigger trailers without being real under powered when we are not towing a 15k beast.

Horsepower or cubic inches are a VERY BAD single indication of carrying capacity OR towing capacity.

The same Chevy Duramax used in a 2500 pick-up is also installed in Kodiak 5500 series trucks with much larger towing and payload ratings. The same 6.7L Cummins that is in a Dodge 2500 truck is also installed in medium duty trucks including the Ford F-650. These engines are already being used, as you say, to pull or haul much larger loads than pick-ups are rated for.
In these applications, they are generally rated for LOWER HP than in pick-ups. This is to ensure longevity when being worked so hard.
Personally, I think the diesel pick-up HP wars are ridiculous. My LLY Duramax is bone stock and has plenty of power to pull anything I hook to it. In fact, I would gladly give up 50 HP to get an additional 5 MPG.
I'd like to see the big 3 offer an optional de-tuned engine that would have less power, less torque, and get twice the mileage. The diesels put in trucks back in the 80's and 90's got better MPG than some of the new ones. I realize a lot of that is because of all the emissions******strangling the new diesels.
