I know this might come as a shock(the shock is that I dont know!) to some but How does this all work? I guess I can ask it this way, if someone has a WEB site(a personal one thats RV related) and this person's WEB site has Links to Companies and also may or may not have advertising on such WEB site, does this site generate revenue simply by the number of visits to that site.

The reason that Im interested is that I see some "people" have personal WEB sites that have lots of info related to RV's and they will direct you to their WEB site rather than answer a question outright. I assume that is to generate more hits? If so, what kind of revenue are we talking about? Dont worry....its not someone on this Forum that Im referring to but others somewhere else. Just looking for a basic idea in WEB site 101?

I think a lot of us refer to our web sites because it is much easier to give a link to a posting than to write a few paragraphs on the same subject. For instance, if someone asks about what to do in a certain area and I have been there and posted about the visit in my blog, refering to the blog entry is much more efficient than writing all that same info again.

Had a blog for several years, and I do not do or get involved in anything commercial.

Being retired, I just don't want a J O B, tax issues, etc.....for the fun of the game.,,,,only....

i.e.,,,if you enjoy fishing, don't ever fish commercially,
If you enjoy rv'n,, don't rv commercially,,,,,if'n you enjoy secks, don't do it commercially,,,,jmho......anything commercial changes the landscape....jmho.

Yes, money is earned through "Affiliate Programs" When someone clicks an affiliate link on a website and buys something, the host web site earns a commission. There are many web site owners that earn MILLIONS of dollars from affiliate programs. My son has more than 800 web sites and does very well.

We do the same thing for the same reason. We do not have google ads on our website, so no income is generated from "hits."

My websites are just a hobby and deliberately advertising free. No services provided other than what you see and read on the website. Nothing for sale.

I have a large collection of links to blogs, journals & travelogues that are RV related, as well as links to technical information and my own travels. I often post references to the web site, however I don't make any money from it. I do have a link that lets someone make me a few cents if they use it to get to Amazon, however it has been on the site for a number of years & so far I haven't made a cent!

I should make this clear, I dont have any interest in doing this but I asked this just to understand this point.....someone spends the time and effort to maintain an informative personal Site and they feature active Links to specific companies, they may even have Pop up advertising yet they claim that there is NO way they are commerical in nature. Im wondering at what point does a WEB site become commerical? Is there a set point? a set of circumstances? a number of hits? a number of ad's?
To be sure, I dont care if someone does make money from a Site....it does peek my interest when someone screames the non commerical banner yet the ad's, the link's, the special favors from companies represented are either pasted all over their Sites or active Links are in every other sentence.

I "monetize" 2 of my websites a few different ways- Google ads, which are "pay per click"- IOW, if someone clicks on an ad, I get paid (I also set the ads to be related to my website, rather than the persons browsing history). I have a few paid ads, which just pay a set fee each month, and a couple of affiliate links, where I get a percentage of any sales if people follow the links to the websites (you can tell affiliate links usually- they will have id numbers in the links).

But- sometimes non-commercial websites will be on "free" hosting, where the host is actually running the ads.
