We have a 2008 Rockwood fifth wheel and are have trouble with our wheel bearings failing at about every 2000 miles for the last 3 years. Is there anyone else having this trouble?

Good grief... We've got 10,000 miles on our 5th wheel, and I've not even touched the wheel bearings. Our unit uses T44, AL-KO axles. I've got a complete set of grease seals, and Timken Bearings that I ordered from Eastern Marine.

I'm about to pull the hubs, inspect, clean, repack, reinstall...and figured I needed to have replacement parts on hand --- Just in case. I hope we can just carry these spares around for number of years, and just repack, and replace grease seals every 10,000 miles or so.

I would wonder what on earth would cause bearings to fail that soon. That's got to set some kind of record for being the shortest duty life of anything I've every heard of. It's not like trailer wheels spin at 60,000 rpm or anything.

You might get the specs on your axle stubs...check them carefully with a caliper for abnormalities...and then replace the bearings and races with Timkens... I downloaded Dexter's grease specification list from their website...and use the Kendall product that's on their list. I don't know if it makes a big difference...but I figured it couldn't hurt to use something that a trailer axle manufacturer actually recommends.

Hope you figure that out. It sounds like you'd have to stop half way and replace your bearings if you ever wanted to take a cross the USA tour with that outfit.

Which wheel(s) are the problem? Who replaces the bearings? Do they also replace the race? Do they use BEARING grease when repacking the bearing? Are they experienced in replacing bearings? This info might help in resolving your problem.

Properly installed and maintained wheel bearings should be good for at least 100,000 miles. RV trailers are not heavy duty service.

I would take the trailer to a shop that services Over-the-Road truck and trailer suspensions and have them inspect the spindles and bearings. Something is badly wrong.

Or chinese bearings, and incompetent workers.
On the other hand if you installed these yourself, your not doing it right.

It would be a rare trailer coming from the factory without Chinese bearings and seals.. Timken moved their tapered bearing factory to China several years ago. Having used them in industrial settings for years, I am not aware of any of the Chinese Timkens having problems. I believe that the Timken family still has a heavy influence in running the company. Perhaps that is why the quality appears to still be good.

You need to switch shops. Mine have ~40k now with annual service. Your not using the "easy lube" zerk's are you?

Some installers tend to adjust the bearings way too tight, if you're going to make an error make it on the loose side.

Bearins shoud last thousands of miles....think how many cars are on the road and NEVER have their wheel bearings repacked. Clean...repack and PROPERLY install a new trailer and you're good to go for years
