I remember the univac.... vacuum tubes... huge, hot

I was in the USAF's eletronic school at Keesler AFB when the transister was invented... they told use those little ceramic looking blocks with 3 wires were going to replace the vacuum tubes... being fresh out of high school... we knew better. (wrong of course)

Now... here in our town on any given day we may have the biggest and fastest computers in the world... and they are still getting physically smaller.

... in the scientific community SIZE and Speed of the computers are the number one bragging metric. But... usually in 6 months or a year someone, some where will surpass you.

why do we need blogs...we have this forum to inform and be informed by those that know,a place to place pics and stories of our rigs and trips.and we can scroll thru and read what peaks our interest.just my 2 cents on the subject.

Folks, on occasional off topic comment is to be expected, but there comes a point when it is excessive. Further off topic post run the risk of being deleted.

I am seeing post that are on the edge of flaming. They are not necessary, and if they continue, will be deleted. If you have no interest in the subject in the OP, simply do not post. I am going to review the posts that have been made. If they appear to flame others, they will be deleted. If it is a response to a flame post, they too will be deleted. If your post is deleted, do not ask why, it fit in this criteria.

The reason some of us created blogs is that over time things are lost and easily forgotten in the depths of posts made on a forum. Also, on a lot of forums, if a topic sits long enough it becomes locked or possibly even deleted.

With a blog, the posts are always there, easily searched, no matter how much time passes, you can still comment on them unless the blog owner chooses to take them down themselves.

Matt does have a good point here.

I do keep some links to some of my more interesting threads in my profile so I don't lose them, but that is still only a medium term solution.

Mike,

Lots of full-timers blog, because they have little else to do. They rehearse their travels with photos and commentary but very little on the technical side since they depend on their on-the-road service folks to deal with that. I subscribed to one online full-timer blog but have since dropped the subscription. The layout was bi-monthly and just covered their latest visits and restaurants and RV resorts they discovered. That's not our style of camping.

TCM website survives because of Gordon and Angela's zeal and willingness to travel a bunch and interview folks often. They seem committed to twice a week articles. That sells advertizing and keeps folks interested. Lately, the seem more willing to be more critical of flaws the see in the campers and equipment they review. They do it in good humor and it keeps readers and advertizers smiling. It seems to be their full-time job and my hat's off to them. They are filling a needed niche.

Your blog survives on content and your arctiles on mods and trips. You keep it up too. I wouldn't have the stamina.

Best,

Bill

I think Bill hit the nail on the head. It's probably because there are very few who full-time in a truck camper.

Yes, this is accurate, there are very few, and while I consider myself to be one of that very few, I also don't "full-time" in the classic sense (i.e. retired, traveling around regularly), more that I work full-time on contract, then inbetween contracts if money allows I travel somewhere.

The only caveat to that is the forum subscription system limits how many of your subscriptions you can still access after so long, even if you're still subscribed after they get so old, you can't easily pull them up anymore.

I've got subscriptions dating back to 2003-2004 still that I'd have to delete alot of newer subscriptions to access.

I tend to use the internet as a resource when I want to fix something. Say I wanted to install a slip yoke eliminator on a 1999 jeep TJ. Do a search and a bunch of great websites will come up with detailed step-by-step instructions. Such as Stu Olsens site which is a fantastic tool for a do it your self repairs.
Sometimes blogs will pop up in the search engine but the format is difficult to weed thru with little fixed content on the small details of such repairs. You have to read thru days and days of content to only find just a couple of paragraphs about how they brought the jeep to a shop to have them fix it. Drives me bonkers. As others have said blogs are more of a diary than a useful tool or resource.

Just my 2cents on such things.

I remember some years back, when blogs first appeared, following a blog from a young couple. I think it was underaged rvr's or something like that. The young lady was a great photographer. They saved some $$, bought a truck camper and traveled for a year or so. I found it fascinating and was living vicariously through them as they traveled. I think it is the only blog I actually followed.

OBX:

If I remember right, I believe that the couple sold their truck camper (keeping the pick-up), bought a tow trailer AND a small hotel/campground (in Cedar Key, Florida right on the water), and are still Blogging

Trip reports and blogs serve the same purpose for me. I want to hear and learn about places to ramble off to in our TC. For several years after retirement we were stuck at home with elder care. When that ended in early 2011, we did make several trips, and managed to put 18,000 miles behind us in about seven months.

We travel with another couple and both have Bigfoot campers on F350’s. We chase the National Park cancellation stamps, so that is the focus of our travels. We started a blog so our families can keep up with our goings and doings. It is really geared to them and what they ask about. It is also a diary for us, and at the end of our 2011 travels, we put it in print and spiral bound a couple of copies so we have it in chronological order to enjoy when we can travel no more.

While some of you have your “secret” boondocking spots, we enjoy learning about places you have been and some out of the way spots you have camped. We try not to stay in RV parks, but sometimes in need of power and shower, we do. We enjoy the national, forest service, and COE campgrounds, and with the geezer cards, they can be affordable.

Unless mentioned here, how do you know if a TCer has a blog. I would enjoy finding more of them.
