I am having problems with my generator. Could be bad gas or a stuck float. Had water and vapor coming out exhaust. Now it's running and the govenor may be out of adjustment along with the HZ. Can you tell me what these screws adjust in first photo?

Also, the spring in photo 2 upper left on carb seems very weak and doesn't bring the arm of the choke back. Should it be loose?

before you start moving adjustments ,remember it ran great at these setings at one time, you,ve had water in fuel, so lets get a mix of SEA FOAM ram thru the motor and see if it clears up.

In the picture below, the almost square item with the round disk on it is the choke adjustment. There is a bimetallic spring inside that opens the choke as it heats up from the exhaust.

If you would like pdf copies of the Onan service manual, a troubleshooting manual and the parts list, send me your regular email address and I will forward them to you.

I took a quick look through the service manual and found some instructions on adjusting the governor and the choke. However, I agree with midnightsadie that you should think twice about adjusting something that may be unrelated to the problem. If you do decide to do some adjustments make a note or take a picture of how things were before the adjustment so you can put things back properly if adjustment doesn't fix the issue.

Photo 1 Brass looking screw upper center in picture is the sensitivity adjustment. Controls how unit responds to load changes and aids in eliminating hunting and/or surging.

Photo 1 Shrouded screw at left center is the speed adjustment. Tighten to speed up and loosen to slow down. If the unit is running anywhere near 60 Hz, the spring is working -- don't play with it. The spring balances the centrifugal force of a flyball assembly inside the crankcase. It a delicate balance.

The "choke return spring" mentioned is an anti-flutter spring that holds the choke butterfly at whatever setting the choke thermostat calls for and also allows for the choke to richen the mixture during acceleration (load changes). Lubrication is probably all it needs - if anything.

I wouldnt get in to big a hurry to adjust stuff that moisture etc could be limited to the exhaust system (muffler) You could drop the float bowl and see how clean the bottom of that is or just drain it an see if ugly stuff comes out.

It keeps dying after running with full load and shutting off load. Taking it in to an RV dealer tomorrow.

Took it in to RV dealer for genrator. They found a bent govenor arm that was causing binding and springs not attached correctly. They fine tuned the voltage and Hz. Then tested and retested under different loads. Runs GREAT! Cost $120 for an hours labor. I think that's fine considering they know what they were doing and quickly found the causes.
