We went to the Boston RV show this past weekend. My last post was about my concern of purchasing a single wheel versus a dual wheel 1 ton truck. According to all the dealers I spoke to at the show the new 3/4 ton trucks will pull anything that was at the show even the 16,000 GVW units. I don't agree. It only makes me think a salesmen will say anything just to sell a unit. Maybe the truck can tow the vehicle but will it be safe. I don't think so.

I would take that salesperson comment with a grain of salt. I really wouldn't expect a sale person to say it will require a 1 ton Dually. Its really the pin weigh on a 3/4 ton Truck that will normally be the issue. However you want know you pin weight until your load fro RVing both the Truck and 5th wheel. In my opinion dry weights mean nothing, unless your 5th wheel has been weight at all corners before the system is charged with water and fluids.. Very few RV builders will do this.. Happy Trails...

You hit the nail on the head, a salesmen will say anything just to make a sale.

Well, gonna take a different approach here.
The salesman was right, BUT only up to a certain point.
Any of the new trucks, 3/4 ton or 1 ton will PULL the big fivers just fine. With the engines they have out, they all have the power to pull just fine.
BUT
Not all will carry the load generated by the pin weight of the fifth wheel.
I just shake my head at all these "will my truck pull such and such a fifth wheel" threads. Its not the pulling part that presents the problem.
Its the CARRY part, and hardly anyone ever asks the question until the folks here on the forum furnish a little education.

Norsky is right, it's the weight, not the power. However, never, never believe what a salesman tells you. They are trying to make a sale, nothing more. I've found I'm usually more knowledgeable about the truck or RVs on a lot than the salesman.

Roger we too are in the same boat as you looking for a new truck. We were looking at buying a used TH around the 36 to 40 foot range. So we were thinking a HD 3500 SRW CC Chevy diesel would work fine. Then I started to look ahead 4 to 5 years when we would probably upgrade to a newer and more of a full time TH and that got me thinking that the truck probably wouldn't have 80 to 100,000 miles on in at most by then. So going to a bigger TH (Fell in love with the REDWOOD especially the Hobby Hauler. Looking at new now to get what we want.) would force us into a dual wheel truck specially for full timing. I know some will say a dually is a pain for every day driving but I can deal with that. I don't need to park close, go to the drive up or through the car wash. So next month we are ordering the 2012 Chevy HD 3500 DRW CC Diesel. Reasons 1 I like the Dually, 2 Safety can't imagine having tire let go with 3000# plus pin weight and a 40" of trailer on a SRW. It's got to be a hand full. 3 Stability 4 that truck will tow just about everything available legally that Im looking at. These are just my thoughts. I'm not a expert by any means.

i would say that it wasnt a lie if he told you the truck could pull it. that is true. whether you will be comfortable towing it is another story.

Will it TOW a 16,000# 5th wheel? Yup! Will it CARRY a 16,000# 5th wheel? Nope! But then I am not trying to sell you a truck.

I also went to that show, and from the lack of people there, I bet they would say anything to get a sale. Horrible show. Very few Fifth wheels, one tent trailer, no truck campers. Just a lot of travel trailers.

A salesman at my local Dodge dealer / RV dealer says the only difference between the current 2500 and 3500 Dodge is that the 3500 has an additional leaf in the spring. His comment was that the 2500 would pull it but you want the 3500 for the weight. I suppose if you already had a 2500 you could change the springs but I'd verify the parts are the same before I'd try it.
