Racked the truck against a post at the storage place (don't ask!!!)...i know no one can give a definitive answer, as no one's seen the work of the particular body shop i've talked to....just trying to get general experiences
going to eat the cost of this one out-of-pocket...went to a shade-tree guy who has little or no overhead but also doesn't have computer paint matching, etc....that's option 1....option 2 is a 'normal' full-service collision center, for about four times the cost...
want the truck to look good enough, but don't plan to get out a micrometer to make sure the door gap, for example, is precisely to the 1/1000 of an inch to factor specification...
thoughts?

Personally, I would want a truck that new fixed right, and with these new paints and finishes, it is tough to get a first class job without the proper equipment.
Now if that happened to my old green van, I would go the cheap route.

Take a look at some of his work. We had a bodyshop for years and I couldn't believe the junk that came out of some shops, and the great work out of some little shop that I would not have expected it!

I'm a shade tree guy. You gotta figure he's the same mechanic that works for the high priced shop and has the same abilities that you pay mega bucks for him to do at the shop. As for paint match, most paint suppliers have the technology to match any paint with a sample. I just had the hood and roof of the F-350 repainted by a cut-rate shop and the match was perfect.. FWIW, for price comparison, $1200.00 for just the roof and hood..

My bother is a shade tree out of his house and the bulk of his work is from local dealers for repairing and painting the little bits like trim, mirror housings, and bumper covers on recent trade ins needing touched up.

Have you had had so many claims that your insurance company will cancel you if you turn it in? As suggested before, maybe you should take up a hobby that is not so dangerous for you as well as other folks!

As you aluded to yourself, some small independent shops to very good work and some don't. Pretty much the same can be said for the big guys. Probably find more of the big guys doing excellent work that the former. If you KNOW what kind of work the shop you're considering does and are happy with it, why not use them?

I would look at work from both places. Maybe the shade tree guy worked for a full blown collision center?
And, how long are your going to keep the truck, I assume it's the Tundra in your profile?
